Deer Vision: How it Works (Picking the Right Camo)

  • Do you know how deer see? Deer vision is something that has been scientifically researched for many, many years. Top universities from across the country have put together some key information to better understand how the deer families vision works. Deer, elk, moose all have relatively the same type of vision. As a deer hunter, it is important for you to use this deer vision information to make yourself a smarter consumer when it comes to buying hunting camo, and a better deer hunter!
To keep you hidden, Veil uses deep research and development. We could make the coolest looking patterns out there, but it doesn't matter unless it helps you hide and succeed in your pursuits. Everything we do has a purpose, and that purpose is your success. Veil has created a machine learning system that understands what the natural world looks like, allowing us to regrow concealment in the likeness of the environment you are hunting.

Let me save you some money. It absolutely does not matter what you wear. Deer see movement. So when you are hunting, it is the 1st that moves that loses. (Picking the right camo) is just for your buddies. I won a $500 bet by dressing up like a clown for camo 1 year. I shot a 9 point with a 22 inch spread. Bottom line is, wear whatever you have. Put your money into your equipment. Wear cloths that work for the weather. Most important: ENJOY YOUR HUNT!!!

I concur, I have stalked and hunted and photographed deer and Elk for over 50 years.
I have tried every color combination imaginable and if I don't move they don't see me.
Further, if a deer is ground feeding and I only move very slowly when their head is down I can usually get within 20-50 feet from them.
Whatever you do, NEVER wear camo during rifle seasons. Other hunters may not see you when game runs between you and them.
I always wear blaze orange clothing when hunting and the game isn't affected.
Save money and buy ammo for practice.

Years ago my sister in law's husband got a deer that literally walked up to him and nudged him in the back. He was wearing a brown Carhart coat, blue jeans and mud boots. But he knew how to sit still. After the deer moved away about 20 feet, he took the shot and brought home the venison. As respondents say down below, movement is really the key, and, don't wear aftershave...lol

You’re likely a protanomalous trichromat which is different from a protanope in which deer belong. With your vision, you still have all of the three types of cones associated with color vision. These include L cones (red), M cones (green), and S cones (blue). In a protanomalous trichromat you have them all, but the spectrum is shifted so you see color differently. In a protanope, there are no L cones and therefore there are no receptors to detect colors near the red spectrum. Sorry for the long winded explanation lol. Hope it helps!

I have been archery hunting Whitetail in the Northeast for 40 + years, have killed many, many deer (on public and private land) from tree stands as well as the ground. I've had a few kills as close as 3 yards. 2020 I arrowed and 140 inch 8 point with a 30 year old Bear bow, wearing blue jeans, sneakers and a grey tee shirt from a tree stand, the deer was at 4 yards, never knew what hit it...it came in from up wind. IMO, the deer's ability to see movement and their sense of smell (pay attention to the wind!) will get a hunter busted far more often that any camo color, or pattern. No knocks on wearing camo, anything we can use to get an edge I'm good with, however spending hundreds of $ and thinking it's an end -all -be -all is theme I can't buy into. Maybe I'm an old biased fart, but I just don't enjoy the commercialization of hunting. Now spend thousands on a bow and camo and get into the woods!

Some of the best camo I have hunted with didn’t look realistic. Actually my favorite was V
Original Tiger strip. It had wide patches of black with lighter colors around it. I hunt from the ground and I had deer with in feet of me that never saw me. Same with turkey and actually had the same effect on farmers. The thing was it had strong contrast with colors that somewhat matched normal colors in nature. So when looking for camouflage I avoid camouflage that uses pictures and prefer more generic camo. Another favorite was natural gear but I alway felt like it was too light in the contrast area

Camo really does matter much less than one would expect. Ive been in several scenarios that changed the way I think about it. Once was before I could afford all the bells and whistles and was on the way to the stand on a wet day where you cant hear shit and had 3 does move in about 10 feet from me. I froze standing in a wide open patch. They saw me but they just couldnt figure me out. They moved a little closer locked on to me then after a bit of time and curious looks they slowly went on about their business continuing to look back at me. They knew something odd was there but didnt know what exactly and didnt spook. Another time taught me that eye contact will give you away. I was in a stand years later covered in camo with a stand covered with camo cloth. had several deer come in probaby 20 yards away. As I started to move my rifle they looked up as I froze. They kept an eye on me for a while but never got alarmed. Right up until I still frozen made eye contact with one then like a dog she cocked her head to the side blew at me and they took off. So personally I think its all about movement and I do believe they can make out the eyes even when thats the only thing showing.

Yeah I'd tend to agree. There are Alot of mistakes that can be made with stand location and how much you move, your silhouette, etc...
I have been doing more still hunting then sitting in the stand this year. Mostly still hunting around bedding areas... Quiet is extremely important

Friends, there is no substitute for skill and experience in the field. But just as more advanced bows, rifles, and equipment boost our abilities to have a more successful hunt, camo can do the same. Camo has the potential to get you closer, and keep you hidden in more critical situations. I've designed for that very situation for over a decade. We at Veil wanted to share a primer on the depth of deer family vision knowledge we use every day to help you understand what will work and why, regardless of what camo company you want to run. Thanks for all the comments! If you have specific questions about any of this... let em rip!

camo is just a marketing ploy now. I mean my grandfathers and all the rest wore flannel jackets with pants and boots and still killed deer all the while smoking cigs.

    • @partner348
      @partner348 Год назад

Just as your grandfathers probably would've used the information available at the time and reasoned that it was not a good idea to be smoking had they known cigarettes were killing them, knowing that hiding behind a tree would indeed "camouflage" them, they probably would have reasoned just as the comments to this post bear out, that spooking deer is highly circumstantial, but if all things were equal, dressing like a tree LIMB would increase their chances of keeping the deer from differentiating them from their surroundings.

i never focus too much on camo anything, get high, stay still, and dont let them smell you...if the smell you game over, if they see you, can maybe slide, but if you want to spend tons of $$$$ on this stuff, knock yourself out

Best Camo I've found is not moving, doesn't really matter what you're wearing as long as you're still. Get busted moving and game over.

Basic army OCP is the best camo all other camo is trash and is just a sales pitch by the hunting gear industry to hustle you into buying overpriced camo. Go to an army surplus store and get cheap faded FRACU OCP camo that stuff blends with any environment. desert, woodland and arctic. I would leave my rucksack unattended in the field when I was in the Army and would come back and have a hard time finding it just laying in the grass. That's how good that camo is
