Two disagreements: The use of shutter speed- to me that would fall under impressionism, in which the inner world of the character is expressed through "effects" rather than "light" I would say the same for your example of David Lynch's shot where you see two people in the same shot with that mirror effect. To me, that falls under impressionism. Look up the French Impressionist cinema. All the other examples are good. BTW great video man! You are the bomb!
@@FrancoEnElMedio No, think about the word expressionism - express. It is more exaggerated hence the amount of contrast with the shadows and how harsh they are. This is all happening in the set itself. They are expressing evil characters and scary more horror intended emotions. Impressionism is more the interior world hence shutter speed (which is more of the camera's perspective meaning (our perspective) also having a mirror in front of the camera making something seem woozy. It is a completely different idea. In my pov.
@@LealconProduction So,when cinematography is allegoric, symbolic or referential;it is impressionism, right? Kinda works like the difference between diegetic and non diegetic sound i guess.
A better way to describe cinematographic styles, is to say that all films exist on a continuum from naturalistic to stylized. At one end the filmmaker seeks to make the viewer feel like a voyeur, looking in on a different reality. At the opposite end the viewer can clearly see that there is another person mediating the relationship between the viewer and what they are viewing. Anything thing from moving the camera, to cutting to a different shot/angle, how close the camera is pointing to the subject, color and lighting choices, can be considered style.
I love everything you do. Im so happy I found your channel. You are more inspiring than any mentor Ive ever had. Ive been pouring over you videos, and I honestly cant thank you enough for the knowledge. As soon as I get a stable job (corona took my last one), Im joining.
Based on your overview, I find myself very drawn to the expressionistic style (such as Joker, Hell or High Water, Drive, and Watchmen). That said, there are uses of the other styles in other films that I love, including naturalistic in Chronicle, high key in Wonder Woman, and realistic in Terminator.
I prefer the term "formalist" instead of "stylized". because it's the form of the art that is really the carrier of theme and concept of the art rather than the text or subtext.
Your channel is a gem... I always look forward for your videos..... Always learn something new in every video... Thinking of supporting your channel...
Hey I'm so glad to see clips from Akira! Maybe you can make a video on Akira's filmmaking techniques, or maybe just anime in general (maybe including Studio Ghibli). Thanks anyway, that was a a great video!
Personally, I love the naturalistic style, like Deakins and Nolan; but I also really like the cinematography in Del Toro's films, which would definitely fall in the expressionistic style in my opinion, lol.
The dialogue needs to suit the setting, what is best said when it's best said.👌when you stage a script from different points of view based on one matter or moving from separate points of view as the main character changes.💪
Concerning the "stylized style", I'm trying to find other exemples. I think movies like "The Spirit" (2008) or "Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow" (2004) would fall perfectly in this category but I was wondering if something like "The City of Lost Children" (1995) would be part of that as well. What do you think and have you other exemples ? Merry Christmas to all by the way ! 😊🎅
Snyder is brilliant, one of my favourite directors, though my one complaint is that he’s too inconsistent. He just needs to settle on “Snyder archetypes” and he’ll be complete
You give so much good information every time but this time it would be better to write all these styles in the description or something like that to see all of them at once. I wrote it down but that would be easily :)
The realistic style is underrated and underused in horror. Think of the difference between The Shining and Doctor sleep. Which one looks and works better?
Can you please make a few video on filmmaking - like the troubles during film shoots, cinematography analysis of badly shot movies or movies like the films of Ramsay brothers
Great video Wolfcrow. To make a good film is not just about expensive camera. But about the way filmmaker tell story with cinematography. What is your favorite film of all time Wolfcrow? Greetings from Indonesia. South East Asia.
When I get your notifications of a new video I always read the title with your voice in my head....weird or what. Thanks Sareesh for sharing the knowledge.
I would like to see you do a video on how most Hollywood movies shoot movies in that dimly blue light. If you're not sure what I mean watch all of Michael Bay's Transformers movies and the Now You See Me movies.
If you can please make a video on "long shot/full body shot" shot on telephoto lens like a 70-200mm. Whihc are getting famous nowadays. I see them being used a lot from a quiet sometime. I myself use these types of shot and i love them! Though i dont shoot with 70-200
i like realistic and stylized the most. high key is also good but only in certain situations. i find movies that try to be campy and also use the high key style dont interest me because it just feels too goofy, but i also dont like expressionistic movies because they just feel drab and hard to watch.
Which other films, apart from Matrix uses a mix of different styles the best? Mishima in 4 Chapete comes to mind cause each segment has a different style, some realistic and some very stylized.

The reason for the even lightning of TV dramas are less for artistical than for functional purposes. As a TV drama is tipically shot with several cameras at the same time from different angles, the lightning must be even to achieve the same result from any angle. When you shoot a movie, however you can make little light adjustments for optimizing the mood of each individual shot. That's one of the reasons TV dramas look "cheap" in comparison to movies.
I would love to know the movies he is using in this video anyone knows it? hahah if you know one, leave a comment under this with the time and the title :)
Sorry I disagree. To start, a scanner darkly and who framed roger rabbit isn't even stylized because of the cinematographer. Next, there are not 5 styles if cinematography because that would be mathematically impossible. There are way more factors that are in the Cinematographers control. How long are the takes? Handheld or on camera moving equipment? high key of low key? flatness or angles? Symmetry or asymmetry? Does the lighting motivated or unmotivated? Is the scene colorful or neutral? Does the camera move or stay still? are you working with lots of reflections and or wet surfaces? Are the lens choices wide or narrow? is the camera subjective? is the camera voyeuristic? Is the camera a character? Is the camera passive or active? are you showing everything or hiding things in frame with light, the environment or the frame? What aspect ratio do you choose? Do you incorporate CGI or prefer in camera effects? Do you want the cinematography to be seamless or does the audience get to see the strings? I could go on. but just based on what I have said above there are 262,143 possible "Styles" of cinematography. I Just don't think its helpful to put yourself in a box. German expressionism wasn't even a style until some one did it first. Why limit yourself to what you have seen so far instead of taking the bits you like and trying new things and making your own style? Sorry, I don't see how this video is helpful.
