Description:
Setting up a basic powerful mastering chain with Ableton built-in audio effects / free download
Let's try to set up a powerful mastering chain in Ableton with the goal of only using built-in audio effects. When “mastering” on this basic level, we are trying to accomplish 3 things: balancing the mix, cleaning up the resonance and adding loudness (punch) to the track. Of course, there are different definitions of mastering and many philosophies on the order of your effects used. For example, one could perfectly argue, that the multiband dynamics should go in front of the Glue compressor. But let's go ahead and lay down our chain as we are using it inside of the video tutorial:
EQ8: This EQ is operating in mid-side mode. We are cutting out frequencies below 100hz on the side and freqs below 35 Hz in the mids. That way we have a clean low cut and our bass is operating in mono
Glue compressor: We are catching some of the peaks over the entire frequency range
EQ8: We are flattening our some unwanted resonance
Multiband Dynamics: We are balancing the low, mid and highs with 3-band multiband compression
Compressor: We are adding punch to the mix, emphasizing the dynamics
Compressor: We are flattening out the mix a little bit (in order to be able to make the sum louder in the end)
EQ8: Final touches, we are pulling up the bass a bit and adding a little bit of brilliance in the top end
Limiter: We are increasing the loudness of the sum of our track. Note: don’t push it too far, Ableton’s limiter starts distorting the sound quite quickly.

Your tutorials are always the real deal. I've been getting a decent mix from my songs but struggling to master a track to feel like it is finished. This definitely helped. Thanks!
Best youtube videos for ableton tutorials ever. Your explenation, workflow is what's resonates with me! Thank you and keep up the good work!
Thank you! I appreciate the reasoning behind everything rather than saying "do this and do that"

+Production Music Live most valuable type of comment on the internet... THANK YOU!!!!
The best mastering chain I have ever used man!!!!
I usually hate the example track people make for these videos, but this is seriously nice

Using Live plugs is a great way to see where your track sounds in the live setting. If the track rocks then take it to a mastering expert.
Worked, thx
best mastering tut on YT ! ty !!!
THIS is just what I need. At last!
As for Ableton 10, I think that the M/S EQ as a first element is not needed anymore because utility has mono bass option
Hi, is it better to master a track after its been exported or before?
good question
Fairly sure most mastering engineers will cringe at the thought of adding effects onto the master channel. As a general rule, you would want to peak at around -6db on the master track (without any processing) to allow for enough head room for an engineer to finish your track.
Having another set of ears (trained ears) on your music is a valuable tool.
How does one find an engineer to finish a track? They aren't exactly easy to find.
@@jeeroylenkins3081 What? There are mastering studios everywhere.
Such a helpful video thank you
you should do some dj koze / super flu type walk-through tutorial cos you are hands down one of the best ableton channels :)
Awesome dude, thanks for all the good work you do!
wow you compress it alot
Nice tutorial, I have question about chain, if you apply effects on the master track that's mean it will affect everything, so how you can fix one thing and don't ruined another ?
Go back to the mix and correct what's wrong.
Very very helpful! Thank you!
nice tutorial. i love the headroom :) i didn't understand how the multiband compressor worked though. still a huge hunch...
Best video hands down. Keep up the great work supplying knowledge on Stock Ableton :)
Thank you so much ! V informative
Use SHIFT + a automation like Freq for "smaller steps"
nice thanks for the tips brother
thnks!
Shouldn't you add glue compressor after all the EQ'ing is done? Or can it be added before also?
Is the website down for anyone else? Trying to get my hands on that free mastering chain. Great tutorial by the way!
Its not down here in Germany (EU), where are you located? Is it down right now?
Located in Australia, but it's back up now! Thank you!
This video's a great help, thanks man. I'm a bit stuck with the mastering chain. I write in Cubase but want to learn some stuff with Abelton, so my confusion is. With the chain you've very kindly given away loaded into live9, the signal of my song is passing through the efx but they are not effecting the actual audio. I'm being a massive noob here. But what's the reason for this? Thanks to anyone that can help :)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, powerful and very helpful. I don't see any available link for the mastering chain? Do you still use this technique in your present production? Thanks again! :-)
Thank you! Its all in the description. You have to expand it, though! Best
Thanks so much!! (y)
Ableton has really good plugs, but I really don't like the multiband dynamics. I prefer use another plugin (ReaXComp).
Thanks for the video. :)
where to find compressor sustain and punch?
greetz
I love you and Thank you
can i load this mastering chain into an existing track?
Looks like lot's of these effect isn't available in the lite version?
thanks
I would love to see a tutorial on how to make the bass sound in the drop :D
TheMedicinalJ check out our oliver heldens bass tutorial. its in there!
Production Music Live You guys are badass. Keep up the great work!
I really like Germans
hertz = hairtz
hahaha
@@baranskistad2144 lol its way more logic to how it's written than English. I mean what happens to poor "e" if you put it into hertz? it becomes an "ö", it "hurts" xD
So do I. And I am an Australian.
@@baranskistad2144 That is actually how the unit Hertz would be originally pronounced, as it is named after Heinrich Hertz, the discoverer of electromagnetic waves. (He was from Hamburg)
90hz on the side EQ eight cutoff is better. Between 85 and 95 depending
3600th subscriber ! :D
Hi your link for the free mastering chain isnt available, just takes me to you site with no link just to fill in my email address for freebies. can you hel me with this?
Andreas Mihalakos hey my friend! at first i was confused also all you have to do is go to the top left corner of the website and go to search then after that just search for mastering chain click the free one not the paid ver.
How did you turn on the spectrum of your track at the very beginning of the video?
insert the "spectrum" audio effect into the end of the chain and click the little up arrow to place the spectrum into the large window above.
@@SiLeXnet Thank you !
Can you upload the preset of Massive's BASS ? :)
how do you get that large spectrum view to see all your frequencies (looks like a large spectrum)?
oh nvm you just enlarged the spectrum =D
So I'm not sure if I did something wrong, but by the time I got to adding the "punch" and "sustain" compressor my track was very loud. Anyone have any idea as to why? Or if I'm doing something wrong in this process?
Maybe you still have Makeup turned on in the compressors.
How is this loaded into an existing track?
You dont really need a multiband compressor on your mastering chain. Strange that you include that by default...
I need help! Anyone reply.
When "mastering" and "mixing" I turn the volume up on my bass so I get nice loud bass. But I can't get nice loud bass notes and kicks without the other sounds getting kinda like a muffled sound?
I get what a compressor should do, but I'm not sure I fully understand how to use a compressor. I've been looking around forever but haven't found the right kind of answer.
To get a better idea of what I mean is If you listen to the song ol'english by the game. The base is nice and big, but the other sounds are also very apparent. I want that kind of sound?
MountKeverest EQ my friend lol
On the Sub Bass cut out any frequencies above 200hz
How do I add the chain to an existing project? I cannot drag it into the master track :-(
Once you have all the effects setup, group them all and on the bottom left corner you'll see a little hard disk icon and it'll allow you to save the effects chain as a preset that'll be under audio effects rack make sure you name it something you'll remember
Is that virtual riot? lmao
You didn't explain any of the "how to" though, but nice rundown
This sounds like Virtual Riot
I have a question: How to download the mastering chain? I have to download it from your Facebook Page, is that correct? I'm asking because everytime i open that Link "facebook.com/productionmusiclive/app_208195102528120" I get the message that this webpage couldn't be found :(Thanks for helping ;)
why so few compressors?
i️ know i’m not the only one who thought that beat at the start was fire as fuck lmao
5/5
It won't let me use on live 9 bro 😤
Je vous remercie
sik video good shit
The Charley are too low and need high eq
virtual riot?
Can never understand why people use a glue compressor. To me they just sound ugly but people always say the same thing "they're just glueing together the mix". It's like people just use them cause they have to I dunno
"Get to ahll the cohrners of the audible spehce"
thanks dude.
just use 2 or 3 limiters and add gain on each one
must sound crappy
