people talking crap, but my mix is already sounding so damn clean after analysing, tweaking, and using this guy's advice.
that's called placebo
xoox lol
I like how Mac lets his visceral experience guide his tunings. So master-like
this was very helpful, digging this guy :)
This helped so much. Also thanks for showing the compressors and stuff that are already built into Ableton.
This really help with the foundation of mastering, an outstanding class
i really have no idea what i'm doing
best thing to say starting off your tutorial, keep it going, proud of you
Thanks Mac Vaughn! You're the greatest man
this guy looks like a South Park character
omg lool

"Do I want to go into that room?" :D Nice approach on the Multiband Dynamics. Listening to each bands solo and make them sound nice is a very helpful tip for me. I don't know why I never tried that before^^ Instead of the Sonalksis Stereo I use the Multiband Phase Inversion Racks from Dubspot and 2 Utilities. It probably sounds different but has a similar effect.
derLordVetinari listening to each one makes a huge difference
i realize it's kinda randomly asking but does anybody know a good place to stream newly released movies online?
@Wells Nolan i dunno I watch on flixportal. just search on google after it:D -danny
@Danny Rafael Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it!
@Wells Nolan Happy to help xD
Hey mate. Thank you for uploading. This is a really great video. Big love from the uk
absolutely great tutorial! thanks, Mac!
Thank you. I'm going to try this soon.
This was a great video
Very helpful, learnt a lot! thank you
great tutorial. thank you
The reference track at the end sound more dry and compressed and the high-end are less predominant too. I like the stereo width FX in your track. Thanks
yes,,, got all the extra vst's so now i am gonna work with it,,,,, !
another killer video !
cool video. I've been eq'ing quite awhile now and didn't do the side/mids thing.
Thanks
The utility in ableton is mid/side. Checked it today
That's right. Just adjust the "width" to 0 (mid) or 200 (side).
those are huge eq moves for mastering damm
Thanks a lot!! Very helpfull!!! : )
Nice and easy, thx :)
Awesome,
A Headroom of -5dB? That isnt good if you want to have good dynamics. Back in the Days mixes very much more quiet (You can hear it if you compare older records from maybe the 70s with newer records) but have much more dynamics what I personally like more then to have the loudest mix possible :) And then its also important, that VU is very much like the "human listening experience". -18 dBfs = 0VU and I have my mixes at around that area, for me personally -5db is just not enough headroom for me. But I'm also new to this, so I would appreciate some answers from advanced mastering/mixdown engineers ... What do you think about this "loudness" situation we are actually in and what you prefer in termins of peak/rms? :)
I agree on the headroom. I use - 12dB dBFS.
About the loudness situation, it depends on the medium you are playing you're music on. First things first, the new standard for measuring loudness these days is LUFS. For example, Spotify streams all their songs at about an average of - 14LUFS.
👀... even though Mid-Side is literally the ability to manipulate Mono-Stereo, though. 😂
#HeTried! 🤷🏾♂️💯

Buenisimo... Un genio
SO FUCKIN GOOD :) THANKS FOR HAVING THIS!
Super!!!!!!!!!!
Is it ok to master without bouncing all your sounds to one track? Is there any benefit to recording it all into one track and then mastering?
Defo heard a tinder notification going off at 4:24
I really wanna go into that room :) :)
question. I'm trying go back and re record on a track I mastered already but can't get the vocals to match up with the original takes. Anyone know why? Kinda just started and the tutorial book longgg af
how much head room is in the mix before you apply the chain ?
He said -5dB..
isn't it better to leave the makeup gain at 0 at the very beginning of the chain and just do all the gain at the end?
the mix is compressed to f*ck allready. not many transients left... and then came the mastering chain!
Yeah I was disappointed hearing him talk about making a brick of sound. Thats not, imho, a good mind set to mastering. There was some good tips, but over all should be taken with a grain of salt.
what about a wall of sound
chatino tetiddleowne lol, I don't think a wall is much better. Although, I guess it depends on how that wall is constructed... I like music with dynamics. Gives more feeling and movement rather than everything hitting at 11 the whole time.
good tips Corky Romano 😁
Wow... This guy is good hey ?
what shirt are you wearing? i want that shirt...
Would anyone like to take some time and expand on this knowledge for me (:? Probably add on some tips and extra things I should know about?
check out the mastering bible by tim van doorn :) Gets really in depth but explains in a super simple way!
danny mcbride?
This video has been invaluable for me but there is ONE HUGE PROBLEM: ALL YOU PROS ARE USING VSTS WELL OUT OF YOUR AVERAGE PERSON'S PRICE RANGE!
I can't afford (at the moment) Fab Filter EQ/Limiter, Sonalksis (or an equivalent), etc etc...
It would be REALLY AMAZING to be taught the theory using factory presets and perhaps even some work arounds for the fact that their algorithms are probably (definitely) less powerful/complex. the fab filter plugins alone (if you skip the bundle) are about 340€, plus about 600€ more in the others you used.
It's a bit disheartening when you're learning and then get brickwalled by 1000€ you don't have (and honestly wouldn't know how to use anyways in most people's cases I'm assuming, bar studying other youtube videos for which im sure there are heaps).
What can we (you all at pyramind?) do to put a band-aid on this financial snag?
also it might be because of youtube, and i find this happens quite often in these types of videos, but all those fancy EQs dont seem to make ANY difference in the sound (from my yamaha hs7's perspective)
It makes it seem a bit unnecessary?
You don't need fancy plugins, there are lots of great free ones out there, and most DAWs include enough to get you great results. It's not the gear that makes great music. How you use it is more important. Save yourself some money and get better at production. The more you produce the more you will learn and the better you will get.
EQ8 and the built in limiter for ex are nowhere near as powerful as fab filter products. they just arent. theyre great for sound design but not for mastering
show me how many pros mix and master with ableton or fruity loops factory devices
On a side note, I just downloaded the FabFilter Total bundle, so, I will try out their tools in the next 30 days and see what the fuss is about.
like if you wish have those plug ins
@3:23 "...and then we wanna ssssmash it until it looks really big and black"
lol sorry
I wish he taught how to master in ableton, not using a bunch of third party options we don't have.
lmao
Turns out mastering and mixing changes for each individual track. Every person calling this guy shit has no videos of them doing it any better. If the tutorial isn't extensive enough for you then find a new tutorial or...i dont know...go read a fucking book on the subject matter
or you can use a sausage fattener
If you want your master to be garbage i mean yeah
no redline no headline
I love how a 'mastering engineer' tells someone that mono/stereo has nothing to do with mid/side. That saves me minutes of my life watching a clip by a bullshitter.
Sure that was pretty bullshit, but I think he just formulated himself wrong. Mid/side goes specifically with only mid and only side, while mono and stereo is only mod and only, well, everything. The difference is in side/stereo.
Mastering is about polishing the final, not changing everything that should be done in the mix. Would not have this "engineer" change my track completely in his "master"
This is awful advice: the guy did not make any sensible comparison for each step. Of course the track comes to life with ott if you do not compensate gain.
Haha mastering guys are so weird, they talk in riddles!
So keep deleting guys.. Thats a sign of guilt.. You guys are con men.. You charged over £5000 for artist development yet you dissapear, refuse to deal with me and remove comments. Sign of guilt or what ... Good job i screenshot everything.. Talk about census....Mac Vaughn , Ryan Michael Robbins- Dark Star Audio... California

Does he realy thinks he did a good job? Comparing to those two refs his track sounds awful )
