  • Here is the piano roll that first got me interested in Ampico pianos many, many years ago. Special thanks to my dear friend Robin Pratt for this roll. It wasn't until just recently that I actually had a copy.
Here is "Cleopatra Rag" written by Joseph Lamb. Arrangement by P. Hersh and D. Montgomery. Transcribed by Douglas Henderson.
Played on the 1918 Knabe Stoddard Ampico. I've slowed the Rag down just a touch given the crazed arrangement of this tune.
    Enjoy!
If you enjoy my channel performances and would like to help support my own piano playing or maintenance and preservation of these pianos, donations are always accepted and very much appreciated.

Good call to slow this roll a bit, such a "busy" arrangement. Sounds fine to me, Nick.

Was just watching videos of yours last night! I feel like every time I come back your sound quality is better! This sounds like it was recorded with an external microphone :D

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Just my simple phone microphone. Some new pianos coming down the pipe line soon! 🙂

@Yalie06405 It sounds just great. Most of use our phone microphones when posting They do just fine. I often say I'd much rather own a working player and buy more piano rolls than buy an over priced mic 😊

@@SevenPlus65 Yeah, it just depends on the acoustics in the room, sometimes a phone mic will simply not produce a sound that is clear and that conveys the dynamics of a piano.
And the mic I use predominantly, the ZOom H1n, is 120 dollars and is not only NOT overpriced, it is so versatile that if you get it you can do 30 different things with it that most audio interfaces can't even do!
However priorities must be chosen of course, better have a working piano with music to play on it before trying to record it with excellent quality ;)

neat roll, don't tell Doug he has a bad note at around 2:06 on the high end lol. I know he hand punches all of these on a Leabarjan or something.

It is a fun roll! I've been fond of it since I was much younger. I would say if Doug was punching that by hand, mistake or not, my hats off to him!

@@Yalie06405 hey that's true, and a better point to make than mine. I had a copy of Don't Jazz Me Rag that he did, sold it long ago though. I think I have the sister or distant cousin piano to yours, a Knabe upright Solo-Elle player with a very similar case style. It has the caps on the front of each side but different ornamental touches somewhat. Mine dates from around 1915 or 1916 I think.
