he was heralded for his voice, by fans, critics, other singers, basically everyone. no live performance ive seen is the same, he riffs constantly in his songs. which also makes his band excellent in my opinion.
Jeff Buckley was a great singer. He really put so much emotion in his vocals. Never met anyone singing like him. It's always sad to talk about him. Dying on the moment his career was taking off. Paul McCartney and the guys from Led Zeppelin loved him.
We still have the songs and he keeps influencing so many as Muse, Radiohead, Coldplay, Ben Harper and others.

As a HUGE fan of Jeff, nobody should hate on you for your review of Grace, so apologies from us fanboys lol. Just watched Grace and Mojo Pin reviews back to back, I enjoyed both of your videos and glad you gave it another chance! Looking forward to more from you, Sir! (I knew instantly you’d take an insane amount of flak from your initial review and found myself laughing to myself while you went through that portion in the beginning, but sympathetic)
Love your reactions. I really appreciate your honesty and don't change because it's what makes your reactions worth watching because you are being authentic.
I have a potential 10 for you to react to. I don't think I'm being hyperbolic when I say that the following is the most incredible live, solo performance of any (guitar-based) song ever captured on tape. It is *blistering.* It's difficult to imagine that this came form a single person. Not only does it showcase Jeff's proficiency as a guitar virtuoso, it features all of his vocal tricks and acrobatics in a single performance. I think this best personifies Brad Pitt's sentiment about Jeff when he said: "He's Page and Plant in one, on a technical level; it's mind-blowing."

I haven’t gotten to the BBC React yet BUT i assume its the venue, he’s got an amazing and powerful voice, even to those that doesn’t find him their cup of tea. Though I assumed this would be too slow for your enjoyment BUT seems not so lol
Robert Plant has commented on the vocal ability of Buckley in a Buckley doc. Called him one of the most talented voices he’s heard

He has inspired many to play with their voice. A young band that I am absolutely in love with has a lead singer that is almost his re-incarnation. His name is Conor Mason and the band is called Nothing But Thieves, would be fun to see you reacting to them sometimes.
Conor is obvious influenced by Jeff's singing but, for me, he only gets close sometimes. Jeff is really one of a kind

Matt Bellamy bought one of Jeff Buckley's guitars and used it in this version of a Muse song from The Resistance.
There is no live version, as it was just released, but if you don't "react" to studio tracks, I still suggest you check it out
If you watched his live version of ‘Grace NPA Live 1995’ - it’s WAY better. The BBC Late Show mix was a little dry. It was in a BBC studio, but it’s BBC sound engineering not at its best.

Looks like Jeff’s a bit of a ‘creeper’, and by that, I think the more you listen the more you like :D - for me, it was instant. Maybe try ‘Dream Brother’ or ‘Eternal Life’. Jeff’s entire band are incredible in their own right. The bass player is exceptional.
Jeff was Sia's idol and I can recognize him in her old indie style. Maybe you'll decide to react to an old Sia song - I suggest you a raw live performance - her KCRW 2007 session - any song or all the session, there are just few songs, all amazing!

HUGE Jeff Buckley fan here, and yes, it is a passionate fanbase, but there is no excuse to threatening or nasty behaviour, it’s so antithetical to everything Jeff was about. If they understood the lyrics to his song’ Eternal Life’, they would know that :D - different horses for different courses. Just because I don’t understand how anyone could fault him, doesn’t mean people can’t lol.
I have to be in the mood for his live performances. They can get a bit self-indulgent. The studio recordings are more concise and you can hear the interplay of the instrumentalists better. He had some great songs.

Jeff had a four octave range and he studied with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who was the most celebrated throat singer from the middle east. check out his music. it's incredible -rhythmically and melodically.
I am shocked but not chocked that people are sending you threats because of your opinions.
I'm not particularly familiar with Buckley's work other than a number of songs in passing. In this song he seems to be free-form flirting with the sound of eastern tonal structures (middle eastern & Indian) without actually doing a formal scale or raga. He slides up and down in pitch reaching for tones and microtones. If that's the direction he's pushing the vocals, I wonder whether what degree of formal understanding he has of tonality, or if this is largely free form experimentation of things he has heard. I'm not suggesting he doesn't understand western folk and rock music, it's the tonal experimentation I am commenting on.

@@dannyj2571 Thanks, I wasn't just imagining things there on the tonal experimentation. Although it should be said, near eastern and Indian musicians work within set scales and Buckley seems to be going more for the sound, rather than work in eastern tonal scale. He's working off a western scale.
@John Tappmeyer As Daniel James pointed out, Jeff was influenced by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whom Jeff called "my Elvis." Khan wasn't Indian, though, he was actually a Pakistani Qawwali singer. I'm not sure if there are differences between Pakistani and Indian singing, mind you. I assume you would know.
Jeff actually sang one of Nusrat's songs; in the original Urdu! He learned it phonetically, but he hired a language instructor to teach him proper Urdu pronunciation for this performance:

"I hope that people who liked him resist the temptation to turn his life and death into some dumb romantic fantasy; he was so much better than that. Not everyone can get up and sing something they take a liking to and make it their own, sing true to their heart, and be curious about all different strains of music. Corpus Christi Carol was a completely conceived interpretation. I'd never heard the piece before, and when I heard the original, I realised what Jeff had done was even more amazing. He'd taken it into his own world. That's something my favorite classical musicians can do, be themselves but use all that expertise to make the music more beautiful. Jeff did that naturally. Only a handful of people are capable of that.
I was amazed when he did Meltdown. I asked him what he wanted to sing and he said he'd like to do one of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder in the original German! Absolutely fucking fearless. He was convinced he could sing it without rehearsal, just because he liked it. In the end he did a Purcell song, Dido's Lament, which is in danger of sounding incredibly poignant in retrospect: 'Remember me but forget my fate'. But he also sang Boy With the Thorn In His Side because he liked it, and Grace to show something of himself.
When he started singing Dido's Lament at the rehearsal, there were all these classical musicians who could not believe it. Here's a guy, shuffling up on-stage, and singing a piece of music normally thought to be the property of certain types of specifically developed voice, and he's just singing, not doing it like a party piece, but doing something with it. My last memory of him was at the little party in the green room afterwards. There were all these people sitting round Jeff who'd never met before - Fretwork, the viol group, a classical pianist, and some jazz player ― all talking and laughing about music. He'd charmed everybody. I'd much rather remember that than anything."

Lastly, if you check out the Live in Chicago version of Jeff's song, Dream Brother, you will hear the Nusrat influence on his voice, once again. Additionally, one can hear this on the studio version of the same song; which is radically different to the live renditions that Jeff and his band would play.

I always skip this track when listening to the Grace album. Never clicked with me, not that I think it's necessarily bad just the rest of the album is stellar.
Have you ever considered doing whole album reactions? There are albums like Superunknown by Soundgarden or Faith by George Michael (if someone hasn't taken this whole album in at once it is highly recommended, superb songwriting to come all from one person) who's songs plucked out of the album are great but taking the entire package in at once is entirely different experience.
I loved your breakdown of this live tune. Personally, I think he was overdoing it a bit, but it's really neat he can do all of that with his voice. His voice reminds me of Conor Mason, the singer for Nothing But Thieves.
