People who think that this question was 'difficult' for him to answer, themselves didn't understand the inner meaning of the question in the first place. It is directly related to many of his family members' deaths which would force anyone to have flashbacks and I'm sure all of us mortals would take some time to collect ourselves not to disturb the emotional aspect of that tragedy so as to not to lose composure during the interview. He dealt the question very tactfully and gave an equally deep answer which was, like she said. "Very Gandhian" and he gave a very good answer.

A minute of silence before answering this question was the most human thing you could expect from someone who lost father, grandma to violence. The searing pain of losing multiple family members to violence leaves a haunting emptiness that reverberates through every moment, turning memories into a sharp reminder of what was mercilessly taken away. If you find yourself mocking this person for not finding words, please take a minute to do some soul searching and mock later if you still find enough reasons.

I don't think what he meant to say was loss is productive, but rather loss itself is unproductive, but the learning process that comes after a loss is productive. That's true.
You lose your father at an early age. That loss stings deep.
However, then, you become the man of the house, learn to cope with your emotions, find ways to sustain yourself from a small age,
Next time, something bad can sting, nothing stings as bad as the loss of a parent, so, everything else falls shorter than than kind of hurt, and hence you push it out of your way and move forward.
So, loss itself is unproductive but the learning curve from it is productive for what comes later.

Forgiveness, yes. But what do you forgive? You must recognize / realize / admit to what happened. Then the perpetrators show remorse and the victims forgive. Remorse without forgiveness is possible but will fester within the victim and eventually consume him in the flames of hatred. Forgiveness without remorse is an act of cowardice on the part of the victims and will only invite further acts of victimization. In post independence Indian politics, we see a third option: FORGET and PRETEND certain things never happened. This one is nothing but a cop-out.

In a general sense what successive Indian governments from Independence have been advocating is "Forgiveness". Which by itself is a noble sentiment. But in isolation and without acknowledgement of historical wrongs, Forgiveness alone will not lead to reconciliation. Mandela's handled this very well in SA, but we are loathe to.

Nowhere have they said that that the convicted should be set free. You need to distinguish between the two. For some forgiveness is important to get the hate out of their system and several other reasons.

Unless it was someone who lost his father in the exact way this guy lost his father & they were asked the same question , they would never truly understand his state of mind, when he was asked this question in front of a bunch of people.
He must have visualised the whole event, his mother having an asthma attack 4 the 1st time knowing she’ll not be able 2 hold or touch her husband 1 last time , his flight journey from USA 2 India, when he was without a family member’s shoulder 2 cry on , his beloved grandmothers (whom he addresses as his 1st love & super Mum) death & so much more. & worst is 2 maintain his composure & not break down in front of all those people when he was reminded of the worst trauma of his life at that age.
Parents are everything 4 children. It’s never easy talking about the loss of a parent & that too in such a brutal manner.
