  • Sadly, the iconic flying saucer terminal which Pan Am built in the late 1950s.has been demolished by Delta and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It was taken over by Delta in 1991 after Pan Am went out of business. Delta moved its operation to T4 at JFK on May 24. Despite being named as one of "America's Eleven Most Endangered Historic Places" by the National Trust, the plans to demolish and turn it into a parking lot for aircraft went forward. RIP old friend

Delta eats up other airlines just as historic terminals. JFK will never be the same without this historic Pan Am building.

It's such a shame :( The only time I flew aboard a Pan Am flight was with my brother and our parents. We were coming back home to San Francisco from Honolulu.

Last time i ride PanAm is at 1991 just a few months before it goes bankruptcy. Now i see the fate, many of them was gone. Very dissapointed. But atleast we still have PanAm Experience in LAX. We will miss you PanAm. I will do anything to make you back...

the Port Authority can make money from saving it... What could be some uses for the building? Vendor support, employee daycare, tourism bureau, lounge for travelers to rest before next flight, resturaunts, day spas, a gym + sauna, an aviation museum, a pet kennel/hotel, play area for kids (with mini golf, arcade, lazer tag, ball crawl), mini movie theatre or any combination of the above. All could make some revenue for the airport.

Here's what I don't understand: Why did they even tear down the Worldport in the first place? Delta and the Port Authority said that the building could not be saved, but I think they just didn't even try. With enough work they could have restored and renovated this iconic structure to where it would be convenient for the passengers and have an iconic saucer at the same time. And it is not just the now-gone Terminal 3. Terminals 2 and 7 are slated to be demolished next year, 2023. Those structures have an iconic history as well. Why can't they just modernize them or incorporate them into new terminals? This is happening all across the world right now, as old iconic structures are being torn down for new ones, history fading away. It is so sad to see this happen.

I flew in and out of the Worldport 90-91. Lots of good memories. Delta are a-holes for tearing the building down. And for withdrawing financial support that resulted in us shutting down Dec 1991. I will never fly Delta because of what they did to us.

A terminal built for wide body aircraft...seperate boarding for different classes
.....American cities don't do that anymore, just more cattle stalls.......
