Can this be used to track where the plane is in the event that it crashes?

I’m assuming so. The module tracks gps coordinates. So that should tell you where the flight ended.

Frsky transmitter sucks. My X12S crashed doing update, now it's just a dead block

That's user error not the radios fault .
