    After a succesfull appearance in Dutch TV show 'De Beste Zangers van Nederland', vocalist Floor Jansen had the opportunity to also participate in the German version 'Sing Meinen Song'. However, singing in Dutch presented some challenges for her. "You don't want to get it sort of right, have this massive Dutch accent, screw up the words, so that was definitly a challenge.

      I 100% agree! But also totally understand that she didn’t want it to be too strong when singing instead of speaking 😊

    Floor can pretty much do anything when she sets her mind to it. Sidebar: I really wish they would make a United States version of this show/or Beste Zangers. I fear however egos would get in the way, but I think it would be so nice to have singers in a non-competitive manner sing each others songs or songs that meant something to each other personally. In the United States though, every damn thing has to be competition though or money gets involved.

    For someone from a „not-german speaking country“ your German is very good.
    But I also really like hearing accents, they can give every language something exciting and exotic. It’s literally that two strangers are meeting, in this case languages.
    P.S.: I don’t know why, but I always thought Floor was from Denmark 😳

    Love Floor and as so many have stated already, I only watch this otherwise bland German tv-show because she's in it. And I truly have to respectfully disagree with our Valkyrie Queen here. This selection of German singers in no way showcased any kind of 'fantastic songwriters'. Not bad, but that's abt it. Mostly boring and cut from the same cloth.

    See, I don't get that about the German language and the way it sounds. I've spent several years there and it has never been pleasing to the ear, and put to music does nothing to make it more attractive. And that's kind of how I feel about the performances on this show. Nothing jumped out like the performances on BZ which made me a fan for life. (Of Floor, not the show). It's not Floor' fault that she can't make it beautiful. That starts at ground zero with the language. And I think she's kind to say such nice things.

    • @BrendonChase_2015
      @BrendonChase_2015 2 года назад +3

      Fair point. And Floor's BZ19 performances are legendary already. One of those, "Mama", she sang in Dutch. How did that sound to the ear? [assuming that you're a native English speaker]

    • @bertjones3010
      @bertjones3010 2 года назад +2

      @@BrendonChase_2015 I've listened to it previously. It's not a song that would make my playlist. But it's more the song than Floor's singing. I know that when I made my disparaging comment about German vocals one must believe that there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, Vilja Lied is one of four by Floor on Zangers that made my playlist. I'm feeling bad now and need to go back and review the entire set of performances from the German project and see if my response makes the same impression.
      Yeah, as far as I'm concerned the language should be irrelevant to whether one likes a performance or not. I am a native English speaker (though I have been exposed to other languages speak none of them) but I have several on my playlist that aren't in English - Diana Ankudinova, Derniere Danse, Rechenka and Crow are among my favorites,
      Giulia Falcone, SOS, the construction of the music by the composer has strong emotional hooks for me. In the past for 90% of the music I enjoyed I didn't care about the lyrics other than how the voice as an instrument fit musically into the performance and song construction that was key. What the words mean was less important. I was never into poetry really. Maybe my musical appreciation growing up on jazz has something to do with that.

    • @BrendonChase_2015
      @BrendonChase_2015 2 года назад +4

      @@bertjones3010 Yet language does seem to make a difference and that's where it could get interesting, hence my q abt how Dutch sounded to your ears compared to German. Growing up in Dutchieland, 'pop music' was mainly an English affair. Anything else sounded funny and not in a good way. As if they tried too hard. But we were like 12yrs old, what did we know? And fortunately most of us have matured in appreciation of other languages in pop music, right?
      Not me. I didn't grow up beyond our childhood dogmas that pop music is sung in English, chansons in French, so-called "Schlagers" in German and if it can't be helped the odd song in Dutch.
      Floor doing Vilja lied was a magic start to a magical season. The German language shone through Floor there, precisely bcz it wasn't a pop song. Curiously enough, it would've sounded meh to this Dutchie had it been sung in English, as so many 'classical' songs don't sound right to my ears in that poppy language. Classical needs either German, Italian or French, but Latin before anything else.
      So perhaps, the answer to the question of "what's the difference that makes the difference" has a little something to do with the "linguistic culture" one grows up in? Anyhew, interesting exchange, ty. Cheers from Amsterdam!

      @@BrendonChase_2015 Yes, thanks for the exchange Brendon. I'll leave you with one song from the 2018 season that I enjoyed a lot - Davina Michelle - Duurt te lang ruclips.net/video/n_j1clPqEvg/видео.html I don't think the language and I don't necessarily know what makes it leave such an impression. It's the first and only song by her that I was intrigued by.

      As a native speaker of German, I have to say that you are absolutely right that German doesn't sound nice when you sing it. But when spoken it's not that bad.
