She's a bit of a hypocritie, the doctor didn't sleep with any of them, she is trying to cheat on her fiance and doesn't even care, plus she is technically forcing the doctor to sleep with her
Anyone else notice when the Doctor said 'forget mates', he's more than likely referring to Donna's reaction to him saying 'I just want a mate' 'You just want to mate?' 'I just want A mate.' 'You're not mating with me, sunshine' 'A MATE. I want A MATE' Nice character development. That wasn't even in the show.
Am I the only one who's gonna talk about that little emotional moment about how The Doctor has become somewhat numb to his life Cause I just love that little bit
Yeah, everybody did, it is why they made it so apparent. Quick, now go astound us with another obvious observation. Maybe you can blow our minds by asking if we noticed water is wet.
What I like about this scene is that Amy does not get jealous or make a scandal of "I thought I was special." I would have liked to see her, and Rory, meet old companions.
it was exactly that that ruined rose in my opinion of her when she met Sarah Jane Smith she immediately became jealous and spiteful towards her making snide remarks about her age and the fact that the doctor never spoke of previous companions I mean why would rose feel threatened by her just because she's still good looking in middle age and is clearly wiser classier and much more well spoken than she is and still has the banter with the doctor that made her so beloved in the past and still beloved enough with new fans that she got her own series I don't see a show called the rose tyler adventures
NO WAIT I JUST REALIZED HE SAID "mates" THEN CORRECTED IT TO "no, not mates" REMEMBER DONNA!? "I just want A mate! A mate!" "you're not mating with me sunshine!"
The whole speech about the universe just being stuff to him but when someone else can see it for the beauty of it so can he... That should have stayed in the show, I love that
Lol, at 3:26 he calls the tardis dear. Now he knows what he calls 'sexy' when he's cross. And he does the same thing with river. He calls her honey, but when he's cross he calls her dear.
My favorite is part is how explains why he has companions in the first place. "I'm 907, I can't *see* it anymore. But you see it, and when you see it, I see it." Beautiful. Just like adults rediscover the world through the eyes of a child experiencing things for the first time.
Leela (unfortunately) did not wear a leather bikini... She did wear a split leather tunic / minidress though. The lighter, scantier one in her later episodes... Not that I noticed or anything. ;)
I love how Moffat explains why the Doctor has companions, I can appreciate the other idea, that he wants to be adored because of his huge ego, but this makes perfect sense too; after seeing everything he needs someone else to be able to appreciate all the wonders that he witnesses.
'because i cant see it anymore' thats honestly the first time ive understood (i think) what the Doctor was getting at, Doctor Who confuses me lol, so many times ive watched it and when it finished just thought 'that was great!!, what happened?' Too many of us 'cant see it anymore'
True...and it's really a sequence that should've stayed in, as it finally shows a prime motivation for the constant stream of companions. One thing I loved about Matt was how fast he could switch emotional gears. When he takes Amy's hands before the "can't see it" part is a good one. Another is in "The Snowmen" when he confronts Simeon at the door to Capt. Lattmer's home...you see him go from spastic-get-away-from-Clara to determined-set-in-the-jaw in about 2 seconds.
It's sad this wasn't included, I especially like the small speech he gives about not being able to see the beauty of the universe anymore because of how old he is, I think it really kinda shows his age and why he always is fond of bringing humans along, because through them he can catch that old glimpse again of fascination and child like wonderment at the beauty and terror of time and space, everything that's he already experienced and dealt with centuries ago.
That "I can't see it" explanation is exactly why I brought Doctor Who episodes with me to a New Years party. I've seen these episodes a million times. I'm not as excited about them anymore. Show them to my friends who are experiencing the magic for the first time, and suddenly they're just as amazing as the first time I saw them.
I really like how with the 11th doctor his motivations were revealed a little bit in a way that makes him seem really human. He only finds things interesting through other people's eyes and having them admire him. It makes sense that he'd choose Amy when she was a child because she'd find everything amazing and look up to him. Kind of sad tbh.
This is one of my favourite scenes from Doctor Who EVER! It shows 3 things, how great Matt and Karen act, how incredibly well they share a scene and how amazing Steven Moffat is as a writer. KUDOS to Matt, Karen and Steven. I can't wait for the 50th Anniversary show.
FANTASTIC! I love the continuity put in here. It makes me love Smith's Doctor even MORE, and he's been climbing in how Doctorishly awesome he is every single episode.
I wish I'd seen this sooner. I always wondered why such a man as the Doctor sought companionship from ordinary, every day people and now I understand. I think that's a brilliant explanation. Also "space Gandalf" is pretty spot on as well.
I love Amy's reaction to the Doctor having past companions. She didn't get all offended and jealous like Rose did... Amy was rather amused -- "Oooh, Gandalf! ... was that a leather bikini?!" :)
+Asian Jose That's easy. Name all the companions they show and what Doctors they traveled with. That's a Whovian, especially because they're not in order. No one can just go to wikipedia and copy the list. :)
+EK Blackwell Not too familiar with the latter half of the classic series but I'll try and make some educated guesses. (Going to list the Doctors excluding the War Doctor since he wasn't around back then) #1 Rose (9,10) #2 Nyssa (3/4) #3 Maybe, Romana (4) #4 No idea, though the looks familiar Is it Liz? #5 Martha (10) #6 Don't recognize the face (the way it's framed in shadow certainly makes her look villainous) but it looks like she's wearing a fur coat so...Joe? (3) #7 Rose again (with a hat!) #8 Donna (10) #9 Polly (1,2) #10 No idea but it could just be the way the photo is framed #11 No idea #12 Picture is quite clear but unfortunately black hair and a young face is something shared by several of his companions so I can't make her out from a still. #13 Sarah Jane (3,4) #14 Romanna with her other face (4) #15 Nada #16 Nada #17 Tegan (4,5) #18 Perri (5,6) Then a break in the action and four shots of Leela. They go on to repeat the cycle in the background for the rest of the scene.
Space Gandalf....Except he is often late, or just misses the apointment by a few weeks. Or Months. Or anti-months (they are months before the appointment)
I really like the 'I cant see it' part. The point of 'When you make all of time and space your backyard and you're left with a backyard' is super deep because a backyard is where a child begins their adventures. They explore every nook and cranny of that backyard, until the need a bigger space to play. And for a normal person, that's fine, because you can expand to the park, then your town, then a city, then the rainforest, and so on. But when you make your backyard, your starting point, all of time and space, then it can become boring after you've seen it all. But when you brought your friend over to play in your backyard, then you could show them all the cool things about it, and get excited all over again. I just think it's really cool that the 'I cant see it' is so relatable
I took it a slightly different way...he's been around so long and been so many places he can't see the wonder of the universe anymore...so he sees it through the eyes of his companions. Regardless of which interp is closest, it's the best explanation as to WHY he takes companions.
Its kinda tragic how the doctor describes how fantastical things are so mundane to him now, he can't see the spectacle anymore so he has to experience it through the companions eyes.
Precise portion of girls: 60% That doesn't mean that guys make up 40%. There was the tin dog, and the android. But that's not so out of proportion... In recent years I suppose the Doctor has had a disproportionate number of girls. Mind you, 10 was a bit of a ladies man. Rose, Astrid, Martha... Even Christina De Souza. The only one who wasn't interested was Donna! On the other hand, 11's so awkward he strays into adorkable. Each Doctor is different, with a different personality. 9 was just, er, 9, 10 was extremely good at picking up the ladies and 11 is just awkward and childish.
11 may not have been the player that 10 was, but he has an ability to charm the gals too. Amy's coming on to him, the whole River saga, and Clara clearly fell hard for him.
Michael W Yeah, but that's mainly because he's adorkable and cool. For some reason, his weird dress sense and completely oblivious nature makes him attractive. Also, it doesn't help that he's play by Matt Smith who (in my opinion) is kinda cute...
2:18 ...mates "I just need a mate! I need A mate!" "Well, you're not mating with me, sunshine!" Not mates, forget mates Forget... Mates... Forget... Doctor Donna...
The Doctor's attitude here about how he's bored with time and space doesn't match up with his attitude last season: where he tells Donna that he still gets excited when travelling. Just a tiny, insignificant nitpick but It still bothers me.
Actually, I said, "Oh my" because of all the girls xD Then I noticed that Sulu in Star Trek says "Oh my" So I thought since we were already talking about fandoms that I would make a reference. ;D
This scene shouldn't had been deleted! Not for the fun stuff, but for the part when the Doctor says that after sometimes the space is just a backyard for him and that's why he needs someone to travel with. It shows a lot about him.
I LOVE how The Eleventh Doctor scratches his cheek when he gets nervous. He done it when River kissed him in TDOTM. Subconsciously, when I see a girl I like I also do this trait. Damn you Smith.
Thanks, I had a hard time hearing that first time round, I glad you took the time to type nearly the whole thing out for me to fully know what they are saying.
Wait a minute, they made a Batman reference and a lord of the rings reference with Gandalf in it and Gandolf and Batman are in Lego dimensions, and Lego dimensions has the Doctor and that means........... absolutely nothing!!
That is true. Though I'm glad they cut it, as it wasn't very subtle, and the majority of the time when we get to peek into the mind of the doctor it is very much in a subtle way & a case of reading between the lines, rather than him coming outright and saying something directly. Also in another episode he tells Amy the reason why he took her with him "have you ever noticed your life doesn't make sense Amy" referring to the crack in the wall that's deleting time.
I like some aspects of this scene but others just don't work. But that speech he has about not seeing it should have definitely been included in the episode
Mayo Tango131 It really makes Amy look bad. We already had a scene in the episodes showing that she "wanted" the Doctor. I was already not crazy about that scene to begin with, but it made sense because it was needed to drive the plot forward. Her coming onto him in the TARDIS is redundant and and it really makes Amy look like a jerk! Come on Amy, I know you were confused and slightly scared earlier but this just makes it seem that you don't care for Rory at all! It makes her plight extremely unsymathetic and she seems less likable for it. And the one thing you don't want your companion to be is unlikable.
Taya Van But at least she looks like a real person with flaws, not as Disney Princess Clara Oswald. At that time I was fed up with the perfect companion "role models" of RTD, and Amy was a breath of fresh air. A realy unlikable companion is Tegan Jovanka.
Mayo Tango131 While I agree that the "perfect companion" was never my favorite, there is a balance between a real character with flaws and a down-right unlikable one who only thinks about what they want. That is why I hate Rose so much. She is constantly doing things that make her look like a jerk! From her very first episode, she complains about her "horrible" life even though she is 19 with a good job, a mother who cares and provides for her, and a boyfriend who worships the ground she walks on. Then, as if that wasn't enough, her mom phones her after being attacked by autons at the mall to make sure she is ok, and what does Rose do? She laughs and hangs up with out a word! And she keeps doing things like this throughout her entire run! Only thinking about herself. So I think that the scene with Amy and the Doctor in her bedroom works because it is clear that what Amy does is a heat of the moment type thing. It's wrong, but it makes sense within what has happened and what she is feeling. In this scene it seems that she is saying, "yes I know what I did and I meant it. Who cares about Rory? Who cares if I hurt him? This is what I want." See the difference? One shows that yes the character has flaws but that does not stop them from being a good person, while the other says, I don't care, I want what I want. One is sympathetic and relatable, while the other is simply unpleasant.
That happens all the time. He's talked about going back in time to help Rose with her homework, and the Tardis showed him all those holograms of RTD era companions while he demanded to see someone he hadn't screwed up yet can the computer couldn't produce anyone.
Looking back at this now, it occurs to me how much Matt Smith has grown as an actor. I remembered the speech about "seeing it" as being delivered more wistfully/tragically than this, which is probably how he'd do it now. This is very conversational for such a personal insight.
Im surprised that this scene was cut it speaks huge volumes of who the doctor is and more importantly the very real need to have a human companion by his side
Sky. K The imagery is all cycled through, favoring only the girls; more than Rose are shown two or more times, with Leela getting several images ("leather bikini"). ;) (Of course, the Tardis senses both Amy's intent of knowing vs. the Doctor occluding the fact that he *has* had a number of girls/ladies on board, so the Tardis "conveniently" forgot to include the likes of Jack, Mickey, Turlough, Adric, Harry, Jamie, Ian, Ben and others...)
tideoftime Yep yep :) I knew that the Tardis was only showing the girls, I don't remember for certain but I believe Amy's request was to show the female companions. I'm not good at recognising faces - especially if they're flitting through quickly - and I haven't watched Old Who episodes so my focus was only on Rose. As a Doctor x Rose shipper I admit it would have felt good if Rose was the only repeated one, but my happiness point here was (aside from Rose appearing first, another of my shippy favouritism,) that we had another small mention of Rose and we could see the Tardis remembering her(along with all the others, of course). :)
That's it.. from now on when I watch Vampires in Venice, I am stopping and watching this scene right before pops out of the cake at Rory's stag party. This is too good of a scene to have been cut
1. Gandolf + Starwars = The Doctor? 2. When the doctor says that a couple of girls were hot I like to imagine Rose was one of them 3. When the doctor tells Amy that his past travelling companions have only been friends to him I want to randomly walk into the tardis, remind him about that one time he cloned a human version of himself so he and rose Tyler could live happily ever after together, slap him, and then walk away
And he would say back "You know, there was once this human girl who had a crush on me, yuck! So I trapped her in another dimension & said 'Rose Tyler, I...' & then I turned off the communication link. She however somehow escaped & found me, so I made a clone of myself, gave him to her & told her to buzz off."
That moment when you realize Amy is calling the Doctor a player and a small part of you knows she's right.
Nana Asmah the way he looks at her as she is going on about it he's like "yeah yeah I know"
who else saw clara in the slideshow
+Charlie Jeffrey No one as that'd literally be impossible since she wasn't there
Nana Asmah Haha she's totally right XD
She's a bit of a hypocritie, the doctor didn't sleep with any of them, she is trying to cheat on her fiance and doesn't even care, plus she is technically forcing the doctor to sleep with her
> "Not mates, forget mates"
Is that a callback to "you're not mating with me, sunshine"?
Could be. I always thought it was because "mate" is classically an individual with whom you procreate, but I like your interpretation as well.
I hope so 😂
Yup
This is so the thought that crossed my mind when I heard that
She did forget.
I was hoping the Tardis would just show a slideshow of John Barrowman doing various poses in various outfits.
i would pay to see that
It's a pity I can only like this once
Chloe Ward literally everyone wants that
Someone needs to edit in a picture of Jack in a leather bikini just before Amy says that line. That would be funny as hell.
LMAOO
Anyone else notice when the Doctor said 'forget mates', he's more than likely referring to Donna's reaction to him saying 'I just want a mate'
'You just want to mate?'
'I just want A mate.'
'You're not mating with me, sunshine'
'A MATE. I want A MATE'
Nice character development. That wasn't even in the show.
I know! I was like dont you dare dis the earthgirl!
OH REALLY!? YOU DON'T SAY
Watch it spaceman
I also like how he said ‘FORGET’ mates
That moment when your mother-in-law decides to kiss you....
Nightqueen123 that is weirder the more i think about it
On both sides because the Doctor married Queen Liz I and Amy accidentally said yes to King Henry the VIII on his wedding day
Nightqueen123 ooh gosh. Ooooh gosh
Yeah buddy.
We are into that shit.
Don't kink shame Debra.
"loads of them. They're just friends. You know, chums, pals, mates, buddies -- Not mates, forget mates."
Poor Donna.
Am I the only one who's gonna talk about that little emotional moment about how The Doctor has become somewhat numb to his life
Cause I just love that little bit
It's not really "litte." It's easily half of what this scene is about.
Doctor: 'thx dear, miss out the metal dog why dont u'
Tardis: 'Affirmative!'
Space Gandalf?!?!?!!
I'm never gonna get over this XD
Me neither send help
For all we know, the Doctor was the inspiration for Gandalf because he was crawling through the trenches of the Somme with Tolkien.
"Make all of space and time your back yard and what do you have? A back yard."
That is such a great line, why did they get rid of this scene!!????
because of time and insignificance to the rest of both episodes
because it makes the doctor a bit of a weirdo
They didn’t. It’s on the dvd. Meanwhile in the TARDIS part 2.
Anyone else pick up on the Donna noble refrence when he said forget mates. Cuz ten told Donna he needs a mate. And she though he said he needs to mate
Yeah, everybody did, it is why they made it so apparent. Quick, now go astound us with another obvious observation. Maybe you can blow our minds by asking if we noticed water is wet.
David Caldwell aye aye sir, captain obvious reporting to duty.
+The Rageaholic I didn't so, chill
😆
"You just want... TO MATE?!
Well you're not mating with me, sunshine!"
Doctor: Oh Miss out the metal dog why don't you?
Tardis: Sorry but you fall right into that one!
"Afirmative."
I love how he says mates, then remembers how Donna reacted to him calling her a mate, then corrects himself
What I like about this scene is that Amy does not get jealous or make a scandal of "I thought I was special." I would have liked to see her, and Rory, meet old companions.

Watch them meet Donna and have to deal with quips galore.
Just another Awkward conversation with the mother in law
Doctor: Like a space Gandalf.
I'm in ur account commenting ur duds
I miss Donna.
I miss that "best buddies ever!" feeling that the Doctor shared with her.
SPACE GANDALF
NO WAIT I JUST REALIZED HE SAID "mates" THEN CORRECTED IT TO "no, not mates"
REMEMBER DONNA!?
"I just want A mate! A mate!"
"you're not mating with me sunshine!"
Marianne Kendal NO SHIT!
The whole speech about the universe just being stuff to him but when someone else can see it for the beauty of it so can he... That should have stayed in the show, I love that

Oh my god Star Wars, Lord of the rings and Batman all referenced in Doctor Who. My life is completed
My favorite is part is how explains why he has companions in the first place. "I'm 907, I can't *see* it anymore. But you see it, and when you see it, I see it." Beautiful. Just like adults rediscover the world through the eyes of a child experiencing things for the first time.

Just wait till she sees peri
Leela (unfortunately) did not wear a leather bikini... She did wear a split leather tunic / minidress though. The lighter, scantier one in her later episodes... Not that I noticed or anything. ;)
Why didn't they show Jack shirtless or naked even..that would have been funny 😂
I love how Moffat explains why the Doctor has companions, I can appreciate the other idea, that he wants to be adored because of his huge ego, but this makes perfect sense too; after seeing everything he needs someone else to be able to appreciate all the wonders that he witnesses.
Oh why oh why did they remove this amazing scene?
Because they left it to the special people like us to stumble upon it somehow
--Thanks,thanks dear, miss out the metal dog why dont you--
(He means K-9.I was like OMG K-9)
'because i cant see it anymore'

@2:18 HE'S THINKING OF DONNA AND MY HEART JUST CRACKED OPEN AGAIN.
+Jess Caron Damn you! Right in the feels!
Holy crap I just realized that.
Jess Caron and that moment when you realise donna's not thinking about the doctor
She is smart. This scene should be released. Was amazing I laugh so much

Matt was the best
I love Amy's reaction to the Doctor having past companions. She didn't get all offended and jealous like Rose did... Amy was rather amused -- "Oooh, Gandalf! ... was that a leather bikini?!" :)
sorta hilarious how the next companion looks back at amy and is like
Dear god, that woman is made of legs, that's the most legs on any living human
Anyone else saw Rose Martha and Donna?
yes^^
IM NOT ALONE YAY!!!
:P
No shit moron. They were clearly on screen, so anybody that watched this saw them.
David Caldwell How rude!
2:18 if you got that reference you're a true whovian...

yes. "miss out the metal dog why don't you?"
And Donna.
“that was an involuntary snort of fondness”😂
2:18 "Not mates, forget mates."
Anyone else remembered Donna?

A space wizard is never late, nor is he early -- he arrives PRECISELY when he means to.

Skystarry75
It just kinda makes sense when you watch him react to something not entirely in his control.
2:18 ...mates
"I just need a mate! I need A mate!" "Well, you're not mating with me, sunshine!"
Not mates, forget mates
Forget... Mates...
Forget... Doctor Donna...
Just mates. Not mates, forget mates xD - instant Donna scene in my head :D
I literally just sat convulsing in uncontrollable laughter for five minutes. Funniest scene in Doctor Who ever oh my god XD XD XD XD XD XD
Matt smith giving leela the eyes XD priceless that face though!!!

I nearly passed out during "Gandalf. I'm a space Gandalf". ...My life is now complete
First reaction: Yay matt's a proper geek!! :) (Gandalf xD) Second reaction: oh my... (star trek quote in case you didn't know :))
Oh my is just something people say, it does not make it a star trek quote.
***** Little green wand doesn't make it a Star Wars reference either. It is referred to as a wand A LOT, and even a green wand A LOT.
Actually, I said, "Oh my" because of all the girls xD Then I noticed that Sulu in Star Trek says "Oh my" So I thought since we were already talking about fandoms that I would make a reference. ;D
I love Amy's bewilderment at Leela's picture and probably not realising she's a savage 😂😂
This scene shouldn't had been deleted! Not for the fun stuff, but for the part when the Doctor says that after sometimes the space is just a backyard for him and that's why he needs someone to travel with. It shows a lot about him.
You just know that Amy got the converse idea of off the "raggedy doctor"
I LOVE how The Eleventh Doctor scratches his cheek when he gets nervous. He done it when River kissed him in TDOTM. Subconsciously, when I see a girl I like I also do this trait. Damn you Smith.
"Mates...not mates, forget mates."
"You just want...to MATE!?"
I can't help but think he remembered his conversation with Donna when he said that
2:19 The Doctor just remembered what happened when he told Donna he wanted her to be his mate on his travels....
And this is why Matt Smith is MY doctor.
SPACE GANDALF
I NEED THAT TO BECOME A THING
Matt's about-face and little grin at the words "Leather Bikini" crack me up.
'Maybe one or two' is he refering to rose and Sara?
Same exact thing I was thinking
No Romana
Romana both times
Referring to a lot he was like maybe one or two meaning like quite a few
Thanks, I had a hard time hearing that first time round, I glad you took the time to type nearly the whole thing out for me to fully know what they are saying.
"Thanks dear, Miss out the metal dog why don't you"
xD
Atleast he remembers K9
Thank you to who ever uploaded this..I have never seen this before ! This is what I love to see
It is a Mini-Sode, *between* the two Episodes!!!!
Wait a minute, they made a Batman reference and a lord of the rings reference with Gandalf in it and Gandolf and Batman are in Lego dimensions, and Lego dimensions has the Doctor and that means........... absolutely nothing!!
gandalf*
GandAlf*
+Mental Matt There is also Star Wars Lego
"No forget mates..." :'( Cause donna was his 'mate' ... I'm crying
+Taya Van
Which aspects do not work?
Taya Van
But at least she looks like a real person with flaws, not as Disney Princess Clara Oswald.
These are actually Tardisodes meant to bridge the gap between two episodes.
He loved her, she made the doctor happy... Personally that's enough to make me love her too~
Hahahah! I'm Space Gandalf! Hahah!
"I dunno , Gandalf."
-Mr.Doctor
Rory: involintary snort of fondness
Looking back at this now, it occurs to me how much Matt Smith has grown as an actor. I remembered the speech about "seeing it" as being delivered more wistfully/tragically than this, which is probably how he'd do it now. This is very conversational for such a personal insight.
Space gandolf huh
Seriously doctor?
ARE YOU DEFINITELY SERIOUS!
Awesome scene! Nice character moment in the beginning with his explanation and then well-acted humor at the end.
A space Gandolf. I can see that.
Im surprised that this scene was cut it speaks huge volumes of who the doctor is and more importantly the very real need to have a human companion by his side
I don't know about the others, but Rose appears first, and appears two times. Doctor x Rose feels!
I loved that. She appeared 4 times. 😊
Wow, really? Oh yiss!
The first Romana got showed quite a bit too!
That's it.. from now on when I watch Vampires in Venice, I am stopping and watching this scene right before pops out of the cake at Rory's stag party. This is too good of a scene to have been cut
I love how Amy just tricked the doctor SO easily!
11th Doctor learning from the 10th Doctor's mistake of asking for a mate 2:17
1. Gandolf + Starwars = The Doctor?
2. When the doctor says that a couple of girls were hot I like to imagine Rose was one of them
"Not mates, forget mates" - it's so nice to have a bit of Donna Noble here :D
Mates *remembers donna and takes it back*
Love the " mini - flashback " to the companions from classic Doctor Who in this. They should've included it !
Imao they should have kept this!😂😂 Why on earth did they delete this scene?! It's sooo good tho!😂😅😌
"Thanks Dear, miss out the metal dog why don't you..."
Why aren't Ben, Steven, Jamie, Adam, Mickey, Jack, Adric etc there?
Because the TARDIS was happy to embarrass the Doctor by showing only the girls
The first one the TARDIS shows her is Rose, oh Doctor, the Tardis wants to get you in trouble
