    I’ve been lucky enough to have this lens for a few months now, having picked it over the 150-600 and 100-400 EF options. It really does everything so well, at such a reasonable size and weight, that I was able to justify the massive price tag. It’s one of the few pieces of equipment I haven’t felt any buyer’s remorse over, since I knew any other option would be compromising in details that make this such a fun lens to use. I think the most shocking comparison was how similar an EF 70-200 F4 IS + EF-RF adapter is in size and weight. This lens is almost identical once you remove the tripod collar! Canon has a real winner with this one.

      @jan.tichavsky 3 года назад +5

      It's hard to define theoretical limit. But consider the phase detect pixels have to sample the scene for couple moments to collect enough light for data processing, that takes some time too, only then the lens elements can start moving. There's finite acceleration and deceleration given the small batter power budget. At the end I think there is confirmation of focus or fine tuning the glass position to nail pixel sharp results in 100 MP image. Such quickly rrsponding real time system is quite the engineering feat.

    I had this lens pre-ordered but ended up cancelling. My EF100-400 II performs so flawlessly on the R6 that I decided to keep it and use the $1k difference that I would have spent to get the RF 800 f/11 instead. Now I maintain the versatility and build of the EF II plus have a super zoom that I've always wanted for smaller/skittish birds. I live in Florida so there are plenty of bright days for that fixed f/11 aperture. I'm happy with it the few days I've had it. But I'd definitely would recommend this new RF 100-500 to anyone who doesn't already own something like the Mark II or who can't get their hands on an RF adapter.

    • @szinski
      @szinski 2 года назад +3

      One issue with using EF lenses with the adapter is that you lose IBIS. Yes, lens IS still works, but the EF lenses don't contain the necessary circuitry to work in unison with IBIS. The only way to use IBIS with EF lenses is to turn off lens IS or use an EF lens that has no stabilization.

    Thanks Christopher, your review really helped my decision. I picked this lens (over the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L is usm ii.)
    I've only had my copy of this lens for one outing in the field and - BY FAR - this is the sharpest, best-performing lens I've ever used. On my R7 it is brilliant for wildlife, especially song birds. Even pixel peeping at 300% or 400% the details are sharp and contrast is crisp. It's great for bird identification even if you can't get close enough for a great image. Comparing it to my 300mm f/4 L IS prime lens, it has vastly better sharpness and contrast. The IS is so quiet I thought that it wasn't turned on. Your review was dead on, "it comes highly recommended." Thanks!!

    The lens is great, please do not misunderstand my next words. Considered the purchase but decided to hold on as I regularly go to safaris and this lens could only become very interesting on a future R7 aps-c body. On full frame it’s too short unless you have plenty of pixels to crop. As you said, it’s pricey but it’s really good. The unforgivable flaw is the teleconverter from 300mm only, making you loose the great flexibility of a x5 zoom. When on safari you can’t always change lenses, sometimes dust is tremendous.

Would be great if you could do a review on the Fuji one day, for me the extra reach of the Fuji plus the fact it’s a crop sensor means I get around 900mm equivalent & with the Australian wild life it’s not easy to get up close your usually shooting at a distance.

    Seems a bit of a stretch to say its price is justified. The Sony 200-600 seems to perform just as well and has some design advantages. Either way, it's a whole $1,000 cheaper and is arguably a better lens. Not saying that the Canon is a bad lens at all--it's comparable to the Sony, which is definitely a good thing. Just saying that Canon is out of control with these prices. People need to call them out on it. And, I thought that Sony was getting crazy with some of its prices, but Canon is really going the extra mile here. No one is saying they can't make money, but with their market share, they can probably make it up in volume. More people would adopt their mirrorless system if everything wasn't so freaking expensive. Yes, they have that crazy cheap RP body, but you're gonna need some lenses to use it.

    This seems to be amazing lens 😃! Though slightly overpriced - at least here in Europe 😒. Still I would love Canon to make a big brother for it!
    By using the same design with 105mm filter size / ~4" glass they could make the following:
    120-600mm f/4 - f/6,3
    f/4 120 - 183mm
    f/4,5 184 - 309mm
    f/5 310 - 442mm
    f/5,6 443 - 575mm
    f/6,3 576 - 600mm
    This would weigh about 2100-2200g (+tripod collar) so still not overly heavy for being really close focusing and brightest in its class (almost f/5,6 at 600mm). For me all of those focal length / aperture combinations would be very usable (to get nice DoF for varying situations).

      Yes, speaking from experience. That said, know this: first, at 500MM you're at the equivalent of 800MM f/11, so it won't be gathering a whole lot of light. Second, you will see a lot of atmospheric effects, i.e., humidity and heat distortion when zoomed in. But you can and will get incredibly sharp photos, even on the demanding R7.

    I find the price to be a major issue. One can get a d850 + 500mm 5.6 pf over r5 + 100-500 and still save $1000. A casual glance at Flickr group of the two lenses prove 100-500 to be more of a camper van than a Ferrari.
    It's a good choice if you absolutely must have an all in one to do landscape, wildlife, macro. Unfortunately canon added price of good 200-500mm, 70-200mmf4 and a 105mm macro and thought its a good idea to charge the same for all in one. In reality it's not as good as dedicated solution.
    I have seen tests where Nikon 200-500mm reaches same center sharpness when stopped down to f7.1 at 500mm.
    Again all this would be fine if it were priced according to its capabilities instead of hiking price of an already overpriced 100-400mm

      Your 200-500 combo will be cheaper but it weghts twice as much and you're stuck with mirrorfull body. The 500 is lighter but much more limiting in single focal length. It also costs more. It the end it's all about the system. Canon shooters will likely go to RF mount, use this and other gems like RF 28-70mm f/2 or the compact RF 70-200mm f/2.8. Nikon shooters can stay with Nikon, same for Sony and their 200-600mm.

      Interesting you are downplaying telephoto prime lens that too on 45mpix body which can take even more out of lens performance. And 500pf will be cheaper than this prosumer zoom.
      Also look at weight including tripod coller. It's not as light as you think.

    This lens is ideal technically and optically, and is very compact and lightweight. But if we talk about the ratio of focal length / aperture / price it turns out that value is terrible comparing to lenses like Nikon 200-500 5.6 and Sony 200-600 6.3. These lenses with apertures around 90-95mm stand very near to the world of "monstrous" telephoto lenses. They are very close to the lenses like 300 2.8 or 200-400 f/4, when this canon with 70mm aperture is typical representative of the "medium weight" telephoto lens class. Maybe 2/3 stop is not big deal, but historically for some reason, between 100mm+ aperture "monsters" and "medium weight" telephoto lenses is a huge abyss. 200/2.8, 300/4 or 400/5.6 could cost $1000-$1500, and 200/2, 300 2.8 or 400/4 is jump right away to $6000-7000. You can buy 100-400 4.5-5.6 for $2000, but for 200-400 4 you need pay $10 000+. Then Tamron and Sigma built a bridge over this abyss with their not sharp but very good value 150-600 6.3 lenses, Nikon and Sony later supported this trend. And many expected something like this from the canon. But canon made this "Bentley" instead. It may be the best telephoto lens in its class in history, but this is a completely opposite view.

It is almost 3 times the price in India. Disappointing for wildlife enthusiasts. Many Canon friends who are in Wildlife are shifting to either Nikon or Sony due to lense prices specifically in lenses.

  • @Rascallucci

    This lens is a deal breaker for me to stay with Canon. Yes, it is light and it is sharp, but it is unfortunately nothing more than a better version of the Sigma or Tamron 150-600mm and I will explain why. The reason is simple as the problem is innate and stems from the lens being an external zoom design as opposed to an internal zoom. This essentially means it has a very long throw plus is stiff as so much of the lens is retracted when not in use. There is nothing Canon can do about it since they have adopted this new compact and stubby design language for their RF lenses. For me, I shoot birds and the long throw is just terrible to use especially for BIF (birds in flight) shots. In my opinion, the best super zoom for birding in the market right now is the Sony FE 200-600mm, it is an internal zoom design much like the old Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 or f/4. The zoom ring is buttery smooth and the throw is extra short, a 90 degrees turn will get you from 200mm to 600mm. Last but not least, the RF 100-500mm is massively overpriced, it is hard to imagine it is US$1.2K more expensive than the Sony FE 200-600mm. I am surprised you haven't done a review on the Sony FE 200-600mm, may be you should.

      I hate all these compact extender lenses as well. Good for some for travel but for me I don't want the lens to move at all. Internal is a must for me even if the lens is bigger. Also disappointed with the new 70-200 2.8 RF version for this same reason. Really terrible honestly.

    • @Rascallucci
      @Rascallucci 3 года назад

      @@donniepirelli4668 Yep, Canon has turned the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 into a "beer can" sized lens and they think it looks cool. To me, it is all a gimmick and a trend thing. But, what's worse is the exorbitant price points. Even the f/4 version is overpriced. The f/4 version is essentially almost the price of the old EF f/2.8 version. And going back to the RF 100-500mm, due to the lack of availability in some countries and in my case Hong Kong, the price has been driven up to US$3.5K which is basically the price of another R5 over here. I am sorry, I refuse to pay 2.2x the price of the Sony FE 200-600mm. I have thought long and hard about it, even if I upgrade from the R5 to say the R1 in future, I am still going to have this unresolved superzoom issue. As such, I have now decided to trade in my R5 and migrate over to Sony to grab the A1 and FE 200-600mm. Initially, I did think the A1 was overpriced, but ironically once you look at it from the standpoint of a package together with a superzoom, namely by adding the RF 100-500mm to the R5 and the FE 200-600mm to the A1, that previous massive price difference all of a sudden has been reduced to just over US$700. And for this small premium, you get 30 fps, no blackout and a bigger buffer which is very reasonable in my view. Just too bad, I do like the R5 and the images it renders are beautiful, but the RF 100-500mm and the lack of lens options have driven me to change brands. Oh, by the way did you see the new Sigma 150-600mm for the E-mount and L-mount Alliance? That is what I am talking about, there is zero third party lens support for the RF system as well. I know Sigma is working on it, but Canon won't give them the codes which means it will take Sigma years before they can come out with their RF mount lenses due to time wasted in reverse-engineering. So, to me enough is enough, is time to say goodbye to Canon. If they come out with a R7 in future and when Sigma finally has a RF mount version of the 150-600mm, then I might get that as a second body, but that's about it.

Im ready for a new camera body and I am kinda waiting for the R3 but I need another body now so im either going to start renting or just buy the R6. I have already rented it once. I really like some things about it but others I don't. One thing being that it has a micro hdmi port vs standard size. I shoot video mostly and this would be my lower end option for clients. Its just kind of a pain having the micro to connect to a display. I can see the advancements with RF being great but like you I would like to see some more actual pro lenses come down the line before im fully on board. Yes, prices seem steep for an extender lens. Seems to shoot sharp though. The RF to EF adapter with the drop in filters is a nice option and seem to AF just fine with the lenses Ive used so far for photos at least.

      @@donniepirelli4668 I did check with a RUclipsr first in terms of adapting lenses to the R5/R6 before I pulled the trigger on the R5. He told me it was fine, but unfortunately it is not entirely true. I think for Canon EF lenses it might be OK. But, I specifically asked the guy about adapting the EF mount Sigma 150-600mm since his video was about adapting the Sigma to his R6. But, sorry to say on the Sigma it has certain communication issues. I am still shooting with it on my R5, but you will have to toggle the switches between different distance settings and sometimes on and off with the OS to make sure it is working.
      If you are more video centric and doesn't need 8K, the R3 could be a nice solution because Canon has animal eye AF even for video plus I am assuming R3's heat management should be much better than the R5 with the bigger body, so hopefully overheating could be a thing of the past.
