Rachel definitely is teacher material. She knows how to explain everything in detail where if you listen well you will be able to build your engine with no problem.
Nice video. I like to put a clean rag over the crank shaft when I'm honing the cylinder. Also sometimes you can just replace the piston pin if there's play and leave the bushing since a machine shop will rip you off.
I worked as a tractor mechanic over 16 years before changing careers into industrial hydraulics, building & servicing machinery for the offshore industry. Can' t count how many old fords I built up. A few complete restorations also, very enjoyable! My father-in-law passed several years ago. Hw had 2 ford tractors I worked on for him. One was a 1965 model 4000 diesel and the other was a 601 workmaster. He had a nice little 10 acre place and leased 44 acres to run some cows. The tractors have now set for 5-6 years, his youngest daughter lives on the property, her son went through training school to be a dieesel mechanic, the tractors are now in his hands, he is a very capable young fellow, I have great confidence he will take good care of 'papa's' tractors. It's seems you truly enjoy working on tractors, I wish you nothing but the best. Keep up the great work..
Hi Rachel. I'm not in the tractor business, nor do i own a tractor LOL. Grew up driving an 8n though around the farm. Anyway, the point of my comment....I also have a channel focused in the motorcycle and auto world....and I wanted to compliment you on your videos and the content. Exceptionally well done....which is why I watch them. I do learn something new every time i watch...who knows if I'll ever use the info, but it's nice to gain knowledge nonetheless. I also like the fact you and your dad work together in building the business and doing the videos. Great to see a torch passed down. I built my first engine at 9 yrs old of course, with my dad...and thanks to him, it was the basis for what has become my career. Almost 30 years in my industry and I love it more everyday. Again...great job out there and congrats on your successes.
I have a Ford 4000 4-cyclinder Diesel, but have learned so much from following along in general with Rachel and Dan in this series. Thank you for all you do.
Great vid.,45+years in automotive wrenching, taught Fer 4yrs,had some girls come through 2-3 of them really sharp mde the boys work hard t keep up, dad taught 6th grade always told all the kids they can do anything they want if the put their mind to it keep it up girl you too dad ya'll s an inspiration
Ps the guy I learned engines from had a few obsetions. He stressed motor oil and stp 50 50 mix for assembly lube. I latter tried straight stp thinking that would be better but soon realized the motor wouldn't turn. Took back apart mixed with oil and then was ok. His other thing was to never touch the crank journal or the running face of the inserts with bare fingers. I don't know if it matters but I know what he taught me has worked well so far. Thank you for all you do I have learned a lot from you and I really appreciate it
Hypothetically, if you were to remove the oil pump, there would be an oil seal that goes from the pick up tube to the block, you can see the pick up tube at 4:59, where could one buy this seal? It’s bigger than the one that is used for the head.
You guys do such a good job on these. I thank you for the time you spent on these. And look forward to getting my tractor rebuilds started. I know where to get the parts! (-:
A Great tutorial & video Rachel. Since an old voltage regulator is removed, maybe add a small note that the alternator has a built-in voltage regulator. A builders trick as taken from an aircraft mechanic: using double wall heat-shrink over the crimp connectors makes for a cleaner & weather proof connection. I generally remove the vinyl sleeves from the crimp-on connectors, then slide on a right size section of heat shrink tubing. With a heat gun, shrink the tubing over the connector. Lastly, implement chafe & heat protection over wiring near hot spots such as the manifold. Keep up the great work. Cheers, FanBelt32
As always, an excellent well presented tutorial. As an owner of a 601 Workmaster, this is spot on information that I sincerely appreciate. My engine is one of the few things that doesn't need work after my 27 years of ownership, so please keep providing more info covering the 600 series. Your book on the Farmall Cub was instrumental on my getting my project Cub back looking and running like new. Thank you both for your efforts.
Gotta tell you, I really appreciated this video. I have a Hyster forklift that has the same small Ford 172 engine like the tractor in this video. I was having difficulty finding any information on sourcing parts while searching Hyster Engine. I stumbled upon this video and your website. So glad to find readily available parts. I'll be ordering some soon. Just followed you on your Instagram page as well. I'd like to see more posts from you guys on there if possible. Thank you for your efforts on making these videos. I too know the struggles. Keep it up. You gotta new fan.👍👍
Really enjoyed this! I've always had a love affair with farm tractors. Ford's, John Deere, Case, I love them all. BTW that Mobil Delvac 15w40 is very good oil. I use it in just about everything I have. From my little JD tiller with a 6hp Tecumseh to my Tractors. Including my 1997 F250 7.3 4x4 . That I purchased new. Now has over 265,000 miles. Never had ANY engine trouble from what so ever.
I have done parts of the motor rebuild but never so smoothly as you two just did. sweet team work. Looks to be a 4-6 hour job for an old time pro And 8 to 16 hours for the beginner. As always yet another GREAT video for knowledge and motivation to just jump in and do it...
You always make my day ! 😂 I’m still working my 9 to 5 and farming after work and on the weekends and looking forward leaving the 9 to 5 rat race and be happy on the farm
Because of watching your videos i now want to buy an older ford tractor and work on restoring it i have put a clutch in an 8n before and had fun with it now want to do a full overhaul
HI GUYS, LUV YOUR VIDEOS,, ONLY THING YOU'RE MISSING IS CHECKING THE HEAD SURFACE, FOR WARPAGE, MOST PROBABLY NEED MILLED,, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS,,,
Rachel you are amazing!!! I bought a 600 but with propane and I think the motor is locked and I’m not a mechanic. But with your videos I’m wanting to dig into it and see if I can bring it back to life :)
I put rubber hose over the rod bolts when I install them. I couple inches extension past the bolt protects the crank journal. The right size hose stays on during installation but pulls off easily when done.
I am a mechanic of agricultural machinery in Poland. What company do you use oils and filters for agricultural machinery, cars on a farm. What oils and filters are the best in the US. Super video . Greetings from Poland
Filters. Donaldson, Baldwin, CAT. Oil. I'm not touching that subject. For a tractor of this vintage... really anything is better than what they had back then. Just change the oil.
I have a Farmall 140 from 1974 and recently, it started leaking around the brass nut and fuel pipe at the sediment bowl assembly. It had a small washer at the end of the fuel pipe that went into the sediment bowl assembly before the larger nut was screwed in but I lost it but have read that the washer was later replaced with the current type of ferrule but I can’t seem to figure correct size to stop the leak or if the ferrule needs to be connected to the nut to start with or if it matters to get a proper seal.
Very thorough, as usual! Very clear and good tips. Please do a brake and axle seal on an 8N in your excellent style! Thanks for the great work, you’ll be my part source.
Hi Rick, we do have a tutorial available for purchase that pertains to the Ford brakes and axle seal, here: farmtractorrepair.com/collections/ford-dvds/products/ford-brake-repair-for-several-models
Great job by both very informational i just picked up a F 800 thats in need of a lot of work and you guys made my day, if i could say one thing that scares me is smacking two hammers together only from experience you can get some really nasty shards that fly off hardened surfaces. Please be careful thank you so much for the video.
I'm confused. A seal was removed from the exhaust valve stem, but no seal was installed. Conversation noted the exhaust valve would get too hot for a seal. no seal results in oil consumption?
Alright Rachel, I've noticed you haven't given any love to Case Tractors. I need one of these spiffy videos about an inframe rebuild on a Case 570 with the 188d engine. love your videos!
Got any good old garden tractor channel or site recommendations I've kind of grown fond of the old garden tractors so much so that I ended up buying a 78 case 644 bucket loader I'm doing a frame up restoration on and a John Deere 4x6 Gator with the dump bed they're like my Tonka toys they're small enough to play around with in the yard and big enough to actually get on and play without in the yard lol I didn't and don't even need a tractor I just think they're cool and they remind me of my childhood the big ones are cool too but the small ones are easier to play with less risk of messing anything up I'd say
one thing I noticed is the Ring measuring in the bore was not pushed in with the piston. Measurements could be off if its not pushed in properly.. Just a small thing.. Great rebuild
BILLSTMAXX good eye. They make a plastic tool that gets the piston ring perfectly square inside the cylinder. You’re right, it is just a small thing. But peace of mind goes a long way
Sharp eye bill ! a floating connecting rod will have a little play that's why they have play it's called float play. however , there are connecting rods that are pressed together and the wrist pin will have zero play in them. would be a lot of work to rebuild your 2N .and make a complete video set. here in the states it's recommended to take multiple ring gap measurements top , middle , bottom. keep up the hard work bill on your 2N. I can't wait till you split your 2N.
can use a clean piston upside down to square it in bore with oil rings on from top, note when deglazing bores with hone, use clean oily rags in bottom of bore to keep grit off crankshaft for that is dynamite to engine, hone only the ring travel area and pull rags out then brake clean on a clean rag to clean bores and check for grit on crank. do not use air to clean. also check for ring bind in bottom ring travel area

Best engine overhaul yet! Appreciate the detailed explanation and close-up shots of all the procedures. You and your Dad make a great team.

You are awesome! I had to look up several of your videos as I was working on my Jubilee!
