I really really like this movie. I like that the directors seemed to know that trying to explain time travel BS would just lead to nowhere and just go ahead with the plot of the movie. IMO, one way or another, no matter how you try to explain time travel, it'll eventually become a paradox unless you insert multi-verse theory.
My theory wouldn’t make for a good movie but I think the reality of time travel is that it’s only possible in one direction. Let’s say you are making building something and need the square root of 36. You would get 6 right? Well you would get 6 and -6 but you throw out the negative number because it has no practical use. All the paradoxes of time travel would be squashed. I also think time travel forward would look more like stasis, as you skip through time (relative to you) others could see you in that same space through out time. Stasis also seems like something easier to invent than time travel. I would be interested in hearing anyone else’s theories.
I like to think the rain maker was closing all the loops in the future is because he knows a looper killed his mom and this is his way of getting revenge. Since Joe killed himself he has no reason to close all the loops and the story ends on a bitter but happy ending.

There is a theory that you cannot go back in time before the point that the time machine was created. So if someone does create a time machine, or works out the equation then all of a sudden they will pop up everywhere around us
Like this flick, but this always bugged me. "If Old Joe ceased to exist after Young Joe shot himself, wouldn't that mean that every person that Old Joe killed (Abe included) still exist?"
Yes, also she wouldn't still be standing in a field looking where he was standing, plus the awesome scene with the guy losing body parts looked awesome but was technically ridiculous
It seems to use three different theories, one believing time travel is instant (example being the part remove scene) another believing that it takes time (Bruce Willis' memories being changed slowly), and the other being a loop.
The way I see it works is that changes only happen to the future individual at the moment those events happen. So any occurrences in the past won't cease to exist and future events or people will only change once they reach that moment in time. That's why old Joe still remembered his wife and his past experiences even though his younger self's timeline got completely changed.
Another big temporal paradox/plot hole is Old Seth/Young Seth. If Young Seth is captured and has most of his limbs cut off, that completely alters his future self, including the thirty years he lived afterward, and his arrival back in the past, confronted by Young Seth. I don't think we would have been treated to the scene of him stumbling toward the address, with his limbs disappearing. If he had those body parts removed from his young self, his older self could never have run away in the first place. It wouldn't happen the way it was depicted and...Oh my god, I just went cross-eyed.
Honestly I dont really see holes in the script as you said time travel movies are extremely difficult but in my mind I think looper did a good job of not convoluting it too much
Wasn’t Joe’s friend shot with a gat instead of a blunderbust? The guy that shoots him doesn’t use a blunderbust and I think it makes it pretty clear what weapon is used to kill him and it’s a gat.
The rumor about the rainmaker was that he saw his mom get shot.. which was looped in young Joe's foresight before he killed himself. Which in itself is time travel of sort. Intentionally so? Who knows. But, the thought timeline of rumors specifically says "shot" not "killed". Thus it's not open ended. It's looped.
Question, in the movie, when a guy runs off they torture the younger version of the guy and cut pieces off in order to get the older version to turn himself in. By the time he gets to where they want him he is missing limbs all over the place. Why bother with that? Why not just kill the younger version and the older one disappears? @@ravifennec it works in that sense as a means of making contact and passing messages, but if you are just trying to get the older version to turn himself in in order to kill him, why not save yourself the trouble and just kill the younger version and the older one just disappears? @@FLdancer00 It's weird because we know what young Bruce Willis looked like, coupled with the fact that JGL looks like he has heaps of eye shadow on. He should have just been presented normally and let the audience suspend belief that he looks a bit different.
12:56 the film "stumbles" only if you think exclusively linearly. Which is neither how time nor universe work. It's just us: we work that way, our brains work that way, and that's why we perceive the film as "stumbling".
It doesn't really create a paradox. It just creates a new time line. If you go into the past, that is now your present and future. Old Joe's timeline still happened, but young Joe's actions simply create a new timeline for the Rainmaker. Ergo, no paradox.
At the end of the film the kid calls Emily blunts character mom finally which infers that the whole “saw his mom die” portion was cancelled by JGL’s actions.
Yeah, I didn't think it was left up to interpretation. The final scene is created to show that events were changed by his suicide, otherwise it has no narrative effect. I think the way Blunts character was written was to make her a bit more interesting, in that she almost gave up her son. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.
I thought this was a pretty good movie. I avoided the new trilogy because I didn't want my childhood memories trashed. I understand the hate for Rian Johnson but he deserves some credit for this movie. Caveat: any time travel movie shouldn't focus on the mechanics of time travel - focusing on the characters and story, like Looper did, is the only way to make sense out of nonsense.
If you can find it read 'All you zombies" by Heinlien, it's the short story the film is based on although predestination is a pretty faithful adaptation.
@@Eldritch-1 Haven't been able to find it though I'm interested. Loved the movie when it came out and told my buddy to watch it because he like RH's books
Lazy writing is not the first thought I have when thinking of why the writer decided to completely ignore the consistency paradox or anything similar with time travel but perhaps because it gives a lot more freedom to be able to write without those types of restraints as I assumed it is difficult to write coherent stories that are also logically consistent
Man, I've never thought of it this way. Thanks for breaking it down for us.. Looper is one of my favorite movies, I really wish they made a sequel to this. Hopefully you can make a video about "Upgrade".
If the young version of the protagonist realized that he was the one who caused the kids path to evil wouldn’t the older version of the protagonist know that instantly when the younger version realizes since they are both the same person?
The younger version only realizes it at that moment. Meaning Old Joe would only get that memory right then. But then young Joe kills himself immediately afterwards, so Old Joe wouldn't have been able to change his course of action.

I saw this movie when I was a kid, it scared me half time death tbh, but I've been looking for it since, the ending had always stuck with me, I'm so glad I found this again
In the final scene where young Joe shoots himself thus erasing old Joe, at that very moment Cid and his mom should have been moved into their home and depicted as being happy. I think that would have maybe shown how both Joes didn't IMPAC them or the gat men.
That's correct - I think it was a pretty convoluted script and the director probably didn't realize it at the time. The characters were the important thing, not the nuances of time travel
In my opinion, it seems like they would end the timeline of those two Joes, but what prevents other younger alternate timeline Joes from eventually going down the same path? This movie was actually much better than I thought it would be .
I honestly find it incredibly weird that so many RUclips Critics (Film or Video Game) are trying to science what essentially is magic. Most stories, in my experience, aren't constructed with the technicalities and minutia in mind, it's mostly about characters. I appreciate the in-depth deep dive nature of video essays like this, but the "it's just not logical," perspective is getting really old.

The thing I believe about precog and time travel manipulation. The fact is you CAN ONLY change the future by the most 10 seconds without your brain frying or your actions ruin its purpose. Fact I see it, there's an indifference within the VERY LEAST 50 years where regardless of development, humanity itself just cycles and the fact is when its not within your lifetime (to a certain extent) it wouldn't be no different than if you went into the past. One day's ebola is another's plague, the very difference in the science of it and the magic manipulation is the concept of the base constant, yourself. Remember you could be tossed thousands of years into the future, you're still you and you're a regular human with the average experience of 30/40 years which you may understand the concept of atomic energy, medical treatment and combustion engines, its almost impossible to adapt it UNLESS you yourself had studied it ahead of estimated time of departure, which in the end, a time traveler is no different from an immortal, where regardless of what you do, you'll never get what you want, but it doesn't mean you can't make the most of it. Why you'll never know how important a moment is until it becomes a memory.

It makes the scene where they torture that one guy who ran make no sense. It’s a cool scene but logically it makes no sense.
@@trevordelepine7708 They may not be sure that he will dissapear and are trying to avoid paradoxes. But who knows time travel is confusing and nobody really understands how it would work.
I absolutely love this film. Miss watching Looper. Well done, Nyait.🙌🏼🔥
As much as I enjoyed parts of the movie, the paradoxes were more obvious in this than in most time travel movies to the point I couldn't ignore it.
Looper really did throw me for a loop 😂😂😂@FilmComicsExplained
We need a looper 2, showing the sid/rainmaker using his powers for good
Predestination was a great trippy mind bending film. Super underrated. I'll see you yesterday for the explanation.
After hearing this clear explanation, I want a part 2 to this.
I was able to not think too much. It's my superpower. I saw a love story with some action and a little time traveling. I love this movie. Thank you for your review.
I can’t wrap my head around the idea that disposing of a body is more difficult than sending one back in time
Future tech makes it riskier to dispose of bodies I'm guessing
I thought Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a very good Bruce Willis impression in the movie.
And he's not THAT far off from looking like him. Don't know why this guy was flabbergasted that JGL was cast as young Willis.
@@FLdancer00 It's weird because we know what young Bruce Willis looked like, coupled with the fact that JGL looks like he has heaps of eye shadow on. He should have just been presented normally and let the audience suspend belief that he looks a bit different.
This need to be a Netflix series. It's has potential to be something more. I would even be happy with it in animation.
8:50, Jesus that's rough!
12:56 the film "stumbles" only if you think exclusively linearly. Which is neither how time nor universe work. It's just us: we work that way, our brains work that way, and that's why we perceive the film as "stumbling".
I also thought JGL always looked like real life Max Payne in this movie
Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.
look at that face at 14:11 he definitely became the Rainmaker
i laughed when nyat said "Lazy Writing.." on explaining about time traveling
Ooh, looking forward to Predestination, that one's a cracking movie!
I thought this was a pretty good movie. I avoided the new trilogy because I didn't want my childhood memories trashed. I understand the hate for Rian Johnson but he deserves some credit for this movie.
Caveat: any time travel movie shouldn't focus on the mechanics of time travel - focusing on the characters and story, like Looper did, is the only way to make sense out of nonsense.
where can i watch the trilogy , is it the continuation of looper ?
@@lucabrasi8453 I think he meant the new Star Wars trilogy. A lot of ppl hate him for it.
When left to his own ideas he is amazing.... when handling other people's IP he kind of sucks.
💖💖Hearts for the Legendary Bruce Willis.
Love this movie, and glad to see you do a video on it! Also love Predestination and will be watching that video right now!
Damn, great timing, I just watched this a couple of days ago.
Please do The Cube, Cube Zero, and Cube 2: Hyper Cube.
This is a underrated but great film about a concept that's has been done over dozens of times throughout history.
"tomorrow...or yesterday" hehe nice
Today for me!
@@ubersmash yesterday for me
Joseph looks so much like young Bruce Willis, He had all the facial expressions the mannerisms and ticks down.
Well that and the face prosthetics lol
Lazy writing is not the first thought I have when thinking of why the writer decided to completely ignore the consistency paradox or anything similar with time travel but perhaps because it gives a lot more freedom to be able to write without those types of restraints as I assumed it is difficult to write coherent stories that are also logically consistent
Lord since finding your channel and binge watching, all my recommends are from your channel... And i love It!!!😊
Thanks Jessica! Glad you are enjoying the content :)
Man, I've never thought of it this way. Thanks for breaking it down for us.. Looper is one of my favorite movies, I really wish they made a sequel to this. Hopefully you can make a video about "Upgrade".
Whats funny for me about this is how much Deadpool is so parallel with it. XD
It's the casual loop paradox.
The protagonist does with his own mum that's why he had to kill himself in the last scene but at "the first place".
What do you mean by "does with his own mum" 😂
This channel is criminally underrated
4:58 I swear that actor is always fucking up in films when’s he’s ment to do something
My man has been pumping out videos left and right. Keep up the great work
If the young version of the protagonist realized that he was the one who caused the kids path to evil wouldn’t the older version of the protagonist know that instantly when the younger version realizes since they are both the same person?
That's the big issue with the movie.
It wants to have it both ways in regards to the timeline.
The younger version only realizes it at that moment. Meaning Old Joe would only get that memory right then. But then young Joe kills himself immediately afterwards, so Old Joe wouldn't have been able to change his course of action.
I really appreciate that you made a dig at Rian's Last Jedi
This is actually one of those movies where I look past the issues and just love the story
A video on predestination? I can’t wait for that.
This comment is criminally edited
You can say this again.
@Law Dorherty Yes, but it's just hip and cool to say "criminally underrated" for some reason.
Your comment is totally underrated. Love this movie to death. One of the biggest sleeper Sci-Fi hits of all time.
I would rather say "underappreciated". Everyone I know loves it. But it is not a topic of conversation.
@@mikespearwood3914 False this was definitely criminally underrated category. I remember when this first came out nobody cared except for movie buffs. The word to mouth was very poor and not many people actually talked about this movie. I literally forced my friends to watch it they loved it but it took me some convincing to even get them to see it.
Twist Ending: Future Sid still accidentally Kills his Mother during his Early Adulthood, Although growing Up Kind he develops Multiple Personality Disorder which Forces Him to Become The Rain Maker again.
Greatest Ending: Future Sid becomes a Great Man due to his Mom’s Love & her teaching him Proper Life Lessons. He starts training his Powers and seeks out others to Help him become Stronger. He eventually becomes a Superman like Hero, Saving Lives on the Daily. One Day, After Averting a World Wide Drought he’s given the Name ‘Rain-Maker’. This Version of Rain Maker opens up a School to Help others like him with their Powers with A variant of Joe ending up in the School. Fin.
I've heard rumors that Disney is about to close the loop on their Star Wars sequels.
They will gather all copies, place them in a landfill and wipe everyone's mind.
This channels amazing for showing me new movies I should watch and movies I need to rewatch.
The complications of time travel make it one of my least favourite plot devices.
But Looper entertained me
My head hurts... great video watching this movie is a task of paying attention to details
The time travel was well done in this movie, from parts of characters disappearing, to Older Joe just popping into existence.
When you close your loop you get gold
1 of my all time favorite films! Bruce Willis is a legend. Gordon-Levitt acquitted himself nicely. And what else can you say about Emily Blounte?! She's a treasure, natural beauty, graceful woman.
Emily’s last name is Blunt.
I actually had to pause this video and add it to my to-rent list.
Rian Johnson not caring about world building or logic in his films while having nonsensical actions? Le GASP!
I like to believe that sid STILL becomes the rain maker. And thus, everything could still make sense
I saw this movie when I was a kid, it scared me half time death tbh, but I've been looking for it since, the ending had always stuck with me, I'm so glad I found this again
This was a really good movie. I saw it when it first came out and was hooked.
One of my mind fu*k films I like to watch.
Cloud Atlas is even more so.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen this movie glade to see you analyzing it.
“But in truth, it’s just lazy writing.”
I love that call out on The Last Jedi
It was good up until the point a magical little boy with super powers appears for no reason. A bit like in TLJ.
Well seeing as people started getting telekinesis before time travel the super boy was a given
They called it Tk in the movie and most people had it he was just the strongest at using it
i just found this channel a few days ago and it’s one of the best on here. keep it up bro

Very underrated movie , really worth watching it !
Exactly. Nobody tries to science away Thanos, for example. It's a movie. A great one. Sit back and enjoy it.
When I saw this movie in theaters (Saturday September 29th 2012) the first showing of the day after its Friday release the theater was basically deserted except for me and a few other people. I loved the film and it is criminally underrated.
@colten bennion yeah that is weird!
Oppressor MK2 is literally spammed everywhere.. even in a movie
Lmao now that you said it, it's all I think of
@6:00 "de-feeted and frightened"....... I see what you did there LOL
I find it neat that Bruce Willis was in two films that had time travel, the other film being 12 monkeys
Remember when we liked Rian Johnson?
Don’t think such a time existed, also you spelled his first name wrong
