Now, that is old even for German standards! Usually when Americans are astonished about how old every building here is, they are baffled by 100 year old buildings - the one I live in is about 94 years. We still divide our houses into Oldbuilts - Altbauten - like the ones you and I are living in, pre WW II - postwarbuilts - Nachkriegsbauten. And impossible to pay: Newbuilts.

When the house is from the 16th century a lot of builders must have left their marks there over the last centuries. Making use of attics as living areas was supported from the 1970s on. I mean, the very poor were lucky to find a place under the (leaking) roof tiles, froze to death in winter or suffocated in the summer's heat for centuries, but those times are over. Energy saving was supported by cheap loans after the 1973 oil crisis, attics were insulated, that Danish design windows ("Velux") replaced the flimsy hatches that were there before to let some light into the attics and allowed the chimney sweeps to crawl out.
