Ska covers go back to ska's origin in Jamaica because Jamaica didn't uphold international copyright laws when ska began
In a similar vein the Cap'n Jazz Take on Me cover is truly the definitive version in my eyes.
I don't know what Ska is as I don't keep up with current music at all but I know what I like when I hear it and I like this.
Ska is not a new genre...
In fact I'd even consider it an old style
Ska traces all the way back to the 1950s, actually!
It first originated in Jamaica, and it's considered to be a precursor to reggae and, to some extent, even punk rock and other sub-genres.
As the other commenter said, Ska dates back to the 50s and originated in Jamaica. “Ob Li Di, Ob La Da” was The Beatles’ attempt at trying to play ska.
Then there was second wave ska in the late 70s and early 80s. That came mostly from England, being made by bands comprised of both Jamaican immigrants and working class whites. Second wave ska often got lumped in with New Wave. Madness, The Specials, and The (English) Beat were the biggest bands to come from the second wave. (And two of the guys from The English Beat went on to bigger success in Fine Young Cannibals.)
Third wave ska originated in Southern California in the late 80s, and really exploded nationally in the US in the 90s. It had a lot more punk rock influence than the previous wave, and most of the bands had horn sections. No Doubt and the Mighty Mighty Mighty Bosstones are probably the best known bands from the third wave, but Operation Ivy, Less Than Jake, Catch 22, Reel Big Fish, and Save Ferris were also important bands in the genre.
This might be one of the best covers you’ve ever done. It really feels like an entire band and not just one person!

I've got a song request for ya. Bohemian Rhapsody. I only ask cos i did a ska version of it too on piano after watching a Spanish piano tutorial (and i don't even speak Spanish!). It took me weeks! It's an absolute ball ache to learn as it has about 60 chords but once you've got it down it sounds so good. I bet it'll be the biggest challenge you've ever had! Ps the guitar solo is the same chord sequence as YMCA by The Village People! WHO KNEW?! Greetings from Vietnam where ive been the lead singer, drummer, keys player, rehearsal organsiser, song picker, gig booker and band leader of Da Nang's only ska band so i know the hard work and attention to detail that goes into leaning songs especially when you're a bit of a perfectionist, Respeck!! :)
