I am also 70 years old and back in the sixties, long blonde hair. I went to Mississippi to help with voter registration and got snuck out in 3 car trunks, 3 of my friend were murdered doing the same. I marched with Dr King in Washington. The change comes from within for each and every one of us. I really love you dude. Keep the faith and MAKE A DIFFERANCE.

Bless you, brother. I'm a middle age white woman from MS, grew up in the 70's and 80's in little country schools. I knew from a very early age that racism was BS and I caught hell for it. I was called all kinds of names and had a bad reputation, all because I refused to back down on my convictions. I raised my children to look at the person within, no matter who it was. Change has come, but there's still more we can do to love and lift each other. Thanks for sharing with us, and tell Grandma thanks too. 🙂

      I feel you...
Growing up in rural South Carolina in the 80s and 90s was kind of rough for a kid with poor parents... Rougher still for a white kid who was hanging out with "those colored boys." I don't think any of the older white folks in the community that looked down on us ever understood that it was the black kids who never made fun of me. They never intentionally or unintentionally made me feel like less of a person. Not for being poor... Not for being fat... not for speaking my mind or for not letting anyone dictate who my friends were going to be. God bless parents like mine... And like yourself, for raising your children the right way even when it's not popular.

He had been successful doing gospel songs, and pop songs like "Having a Party", "Twistin' the Night Away", etc. But like Frank Rios said, after hearing "Blowin' in the Wind" he decided to take it up a notch - and did his greatest song IMO. Who knows what he could have done had he not been killed so young.

Actually, I heard that Sam Cooke wrote this song because he was turned down from staying at a hotel in Louisville (I think that was the location) even though he had enough money to stay there but they turned him away because he was black. He was so upset about it all that he wrote this song in response to it

    • @TheCapedWanderer

Sam Cooke was huge in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s. He and Ray Charles ushered in a new era of R&B called Soul, more direct emotional expression that spoke to black life but also to the universal condition of love and pain. When Sam heard Blowin’ In The Wind, he was impressed but thought, really, a black person should be singing this type of song. Because Dylan’s is abstract. So Sam wrote this song, drawing from his lived experiences and true emotions. Much better than Blowin’ In The Wind, if you ask me! Musically most of all.

I'm the administrator of the Sam Cooke Fan Club page on Facebook and I'm going to share a link to your video there because I know so many of our members would really appreciate your reaction. The saddest part about this song is that it is still so very relevant today. Think about life in 1963 and 1964 when Sam wrote this song. What he lived and experienced then is no different that what you are experiencing now. Life is cyclical. Sometimes we make progress and then other times we regress. The title of one of Sam's last songs comes to mind here - "Keep Movin' On."

I enjoy watching you and your reactions. I was raised in Virginia and grew up hearing all kinds of music mostly gospel and Motown!_Living along side many different races. My family raised me to have manners be honest, respectful to my elders and others. Something else that they taught me was to know evil is always in the world and is in people from all walks of life and color, it is a problem within that person and their dissatisfaction with themselves. Most people do not even know why they hate someone or something. Sadly evil views, thoughts, deeds and people will be with us always: but if we all continue to expose ourselves to other people, cultures and be open to embrace differences we can do better and be greater in number than the evil people. Not allow ourselves to be swayed by the media, music and manners of some , realizing one person does not ever represent the many. Many blessings to you and keep on with your honest reactions!

"...try and not get emotional..." IMPOSSIBLE. This is one of the most beautiful, most heart felt, song ever...regardless of genre. I cry every time I hear it.

Always loved this one. It's more than a song, it's an anthem, and a prayer. And we're still looking for that change.
My dad was racist, but my sister and I rejected that. We were both musicians, and once when the black drummer from our band stayed over at our house, Dad dropped in while he was there and threatened to disown us. We didn't back down. He finally decided not to disown us, but he wasn't happy about it.
Years later, he became friends with a black family that lived nearby, and finally admitted he'd been wrong. It only took him about 60 years to see it.
Music is a wonderful thing to help people come together regardless of color or other differences.
I know that things are getting better, but it's so slow. I feel like we should be beyond racism by now. It tears my heart every time I hear if another shooting or other violent incident, including unjustified arrests and harassment.
I have great hopes for the next generation, the millennials don't seem to have nearly as much racial bias as previous generations. That's my hope, anyway.

I really enjoy your reactions. I hope you keep doing them. You go deeper than others who react to music, and your choices are almost always songs that reach into a person's soul in an effort to enlighten them somehow. Keep on listening.

As you can see, I’m white and I was crying right along with you. I spent the first 10 yrs of my life growing up in a neighborhood called Signal Hill in Long Beach, Ca. This was 1950-1960. My dad was a “Roughneck” who worked in the oil fields & had to be close to work because we didn’t own a car until I was 4 I think. I can remember, when I was 3, that I was the ONLY white kid on our street. At 5 I was allowed to “run” with the other kids even though they were 7-10 yrs old. I was still the only White kid. There were 11 of us. Big Bobby was a Black 10 ur old & MY protector. NO one messed with me. Little Bobby was 7 & Filipino. Stretch was 9 but TALL & also Black. I’m 68 so those are the only names I can remember. After school or during Summer we were always doing something together. No one locked their doors then so when we got tired we’d stop at the nearest kid’s house for something to eat. EVERY mom was OUR mom. We had NO idea how LUCKY we were. I’m not sure but I think all the dads on the street worked the same oils fields as my dad. I can remember we had STREET barbecues in the Summer. ALL the dads would bring whatever they had to cook. Big Bobby’s dad had a barbecue grill & 2 Filipino families also had grills. Man could they cook up some FOOD! I can taste it like it was yesterday! When I was 10 my dad’s foot was crushed in an accident at work & then we lost our car. Repoed. With no Disability Ins, Unemployment or Worker’s Comp Ins, things got bad. Then my uncle found a job for my dad selling used cars about 20 mi away. So we had to move. When I was 15 an older friend drove me back to the old neighborhood. The oil fields had shut down and they had all moved away. Never knew any of their last names so I’ll never be able to find any of them. They were my best friends EVER. God Bless you and we can keep PRAYING for a better tomorrow. Keep up your Reaction videos. VERY cool. Oh. Almost forgot. At 8 I found out I had a half-brother 9 yrs older than me so I grew up on Elvis and Rock & Roll. When he was in high school his best friend was a guy named Larry Hall. Larry had a pretty good voice. Uncle gave us an expensive reel to reel tape recorder the Summer of 1959 and the guys would sing and make up joke skits on the tape recorder. In 1960 Larry Hall recorded a song called Sandy with Strand Records. He was even on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. SO cool to see him on TV! His song is on RUclips.

I have loved Sam Cooke since I was a little girl because my Dad loved him and played his records! Sam Cooke is definitely the GOAT and a part of the soundtrack of my life! I love all his music, including the Gospel music he made as a member of the Soul Stirrers when he was starting out as a young man. My Dad was also in a Gospel group which is why he identified with Sam Cooke so much! Sam Cooke influenced a lot of great musicians that came after him, such as Rod Stewart, who always praised him. Sam Cooke was a great singer/songwriter as well as a civil rights activists who was famously friends with Malcom X. He wrote this song about the Civil Rights movement of the 60s after hearing Bob Dylan's song, "Blowing In The Wind"! Jim Crow laws were very big in the South and the lyrics tell the story so heartbreakingly. His murder is still controversial because many people believe he was set up because he chose to be vocal about civil rights!! He was taken way too soon! RIP! This song always makes me cry because his voice is magical!!
