1983, I'm in high school, cable television came to town, and there was this channel - MTV - that played music videoes. I had this silly thought in my mind that as an African-American, I could not watch rock music videoes (read white people music). Never mind that rock and roll is an African-American music form, I was brainwashed. I keep hearing people at school talking about music videos, so one day, I decided to watch one. It was U2 "New Years Day." Saying that my mind was blown is an understatement. Bono's voice! That emotive Irish soul voice! It changed my musical life forever. By the end of that week, I had someone record that album ("War") on the "A" side of a cassette tape. They put The Clash "Combat Rock" on the "B" side. Like I said, my musical life was never the same. His kids went to school with my friend's (yes private and expensive), and every day they were dropped off and picked up by Ali or Bono, like all the kids. We don't have a celebrity culture here, so famous people wander around without any need for security. Relaxed and not easily impressed! Take care of yourself and others. Regards from Ireland.

I love your appreciation for music. I love all the styles from classical, Hip Hop, Techno, Funk, Reggae/Dub. But I love U2. One song I think you would love that is kind of underrated. I never hear people bring it up is One Tree Hill by U2. It's a song written for one of U2's friends and roadie for the band that tragically died in a motorcycle accident in Dublin, Ireland. He was a Kiwi. When U2 were in New Zealand he brought them to One Tree Hill which is a volcanic mountain that against all odds had a tree growing on it. Fitting for a tribute. "Achtung Baby" might be their best album, and certainly their most interesting.(and their last really good album I think) It has a completely different sound than they had before, because of the producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Listen to "Love Is Blindness" or one of their older hits like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day"

That guy is Bono, aka Paul Hewson, electrifying, magnetic, passionate lead singer of U2. The four bandmembers met and formed the group as teens in Ireland in the 70s. They are extraordinary. U2 is another band I have seen in concert four times, along with REM; and like that group, U2 is one of my all-time favorite bands. I strongly encourage you to listen to the live version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" live at Red Rocks ampitheatre in Colorado, and "Pride In The Name Of Love", which is their passionate tribute to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Both beyond amazing.
The 1st time I seen U2 was at Carver Hawkeye arena, it's was so powerful so spiritual, it still moves. Me today when I think about it, seen them 5 more times after that......the greatest band from the greatest decade
In England, at Live Aid, Queen was the 2nd band after U2 performed. Bono, the lead singer, used about 5 minutes of their 18 minute time slot to save a woman who he saw getting seriously smushed in the front of the crowd. He leapt off the stage and helped pull her loose! He is a true humanitarian, all his life... working to help the poorer countries in Africa and all sorts of good deeds and projects. Just an incredible soul and a talented musician, along with the band. They are Irish, from Dublin I believe. I recommend “Bad,” and “l Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” for starters. I got fired Live Aid weekend. Their reason was so stupid. So what If I didn’t show up for work! I still have the memories of that great weekend. Worth it!

Bono's son is in a new, up and coming band called Inhaler. He is the lead singer in his band as well. I hear his father in his voice, another genius singer-songwriter. U2 lead singer "Bono" did a great collaboration with opera legend Luciano Pavarotti (and others) called "Miss Sarajevo", the song is about the war in the former Yugoslavia during the 90's, it has an amazing video attached to it. I cannot watch it without shedding a tear. A truly amazing mix of rock & opera.

I think this song is about the band nearly breaking up in Berlin after their previous album they had doubts about the where to go. "We're one but we're not the same, we get to carry each other." It's about the band, U2.
I know. I am so lucky to have been there. I remember when California Dreamin' was in everyone's heads all the time once they'd heard it. What a picture is painted on a snowy Winter's Day that Dead of Winter in 1966? In New Hampshire at a ski lodge for 18 days with my fellow 8th and 9th graders from that incredible school from my past. I was running a temperature so I was confined to bed in the room for sick people down the hall. I would hear everyone two floors down clunk out in ski boots and parkas to learn to ski on the ski hill right outside. There was a 1 3/4 inch Dacron rope driven by the engine from an old pickup that drove in but never drove out. You would side-step your way next to the rope which was dragging along the ground. You pick it up letting it slide through your special rope tow mittens with the leather palms. You positioned your skies in the tracks of all the other skiers before you, take hold of the rope loosely in front and behind your back. You would slowly tighten your grip, start to get pulled along, then lean back a bit to allow a little springiness then grab tight, and up the hill you went. At the top, the rope would go up and over a pulley and head back down to the engine room. But I was in the room for sick people hearing California Dreamin' on the GE 7-transistor radio, every 45 minutes or so, trying to remember the silence of the rope tow, gliding uphill with no effort, it was so quiet among the pine trees, you could hear it snow.

I love your appreciation for music. I love all the styles from classical, Hip Hop, Techno, Funk, Reggae/Dub. But I love U2. One song I think you would love that is kind of underrated. I never hear people bring it up is One Tree Hill by U2. It's a song written for one of U2's friends and roadie for the band that tragically died in a motorcycle accident in Dublin, Ireland. He was a Kiwi. When U2 were in New Zealand he brought them to One Tree Hill which is a volcanic mountain that against all odds had a tree growing on it. Fitting for a tribute.

"Achtung Baby" might be their best album, and certainly their most interesting.(and their last really good album I think) It has a completely different sound than they had before, because of the producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Listen to "Love Is Blindness" or one of their older hits like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day"
I still think of it as their "new" album, even though it's nearly 30 years since it came out! Remember going down to OurPrice records to buy it like it was just last year.
That was my very first concert when I was 12, my dad took me. Now at 40, still one of my favorite bands.
"Love Is Blindness" is AMAZING. Very underrated, definitely worth a listen.

That guy is Bono, aka Paul Hewson, electrifying, magnetic, passionate lead singer of U2. The four bandmembers met and formed the group as teens in Ireland in the 70s. They are extraordinary. U2 is another band I have seen in concert four times, along with REM; and like that group, U2 is one of my all-time favorite bands. I strongly encourage you to listen to the live version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" live at Red Rocks ampitheatre in Colorado, and "Pride In The Name Of Love", which is their passionate tribute to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Both beyond amazing.
The 1st time I seen U2 was at Carver Hawkeye arena, it's was so powerful so spiritual, it still moves. Me today when I think about it, seen them 5 more times after that......the greatest band from the greatest decade
In England, at Live Aid, Queen was the 2nd band after U2 performed. Bono, the lead singer, used about 5 minutes of their 18 minute time slot to save a woman who he saw getting seriously smushed in the front of the crowd. He leapt off the stage and helped pull her loose! He is a true humanitarian, all his life... working to help the poorer countries in Africa and all sorts of good deeds and projects. Just an incredible soul and a talented musician, along with the band. They are Irish, from Dublin I believe. I recommend “Bad,” and “l Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” for starters. There’s a rabbit hole, of course, and it will be another wonderful, soulful journey for you, James!

Seems like I read an interview years ago that said he wrote this song about the tough relationship he had with his father. Johnny Cash did a great cover of this on the last album he did before passing on.

I got fired Live Aid weekend. Their reason was so stupid. So what If I didn’t show up for work! I still have the memories of that great weekend. Worth it!
Love that overlooked song
Bad at Live Aid is legendary. The band thought Bono ruined it by jumping off the stage to hug fans, but it turned out to be one of their greatest moments and raised awareness of U2, which became one of the best bands of the 80s/90s.
Where the Streets have no Name, and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, both great songs by U2, saw them in concert twice, great shows! Greetings from Belfast, Northern Ireland, your channel is my favourite!

I've been listening to U2 since I was 12; I'm 52 now. I enjoy watching U2 reactions as a whole new generation discovers them! It's always fun to see new people discover the music I grew up with. Bono's son is in a new, up and coming band called Inhaler. He is the lead singer in his band as well. I hear his father in his voice, another genius singer-songwriter. You should check them out as well!
I got to see 2 of their concerts when I was young, he puts on the best shows. We were definitely blessed.

I first heard or opened my mind to listen to this song in 1992 when it felt like my postnatal depression melted away just listening to the words. My beautiful son who adored stayed with me for 22 years till he suddenly and tragically died in the gym, always brings me back in time when I felt alive again. Bitter, sweet memories. that's the thing, it's magic when a song really reaches inside and grabs you. you never know where or when or if it will happen, but you keep your net cast wide, and you feel blessed when it does happen, the gooseflesh, that unmistakable pulling of your soul's trigger. And it's really a kick to see it happen to others
U2 lead singer "Bono" did a great collaboration with opera legend Luciano Pavarotti (and others) called "Miss Sarajevo", the song is about the war in the former Yugoslavia during the 90's, it has an amazing video attached to it. I cannot watch it without shedding a tear.

I know. I am so lucky to have been there. I remember when California Dreamin' was in everyone's heads all the time once they'd heard it. What a picture is painted on a snowy Winter's Day that Dead of Winter in 1966? In New Hampshire at a ski lodge for 18 days with my fellow 8th and 9th graders from that incredible school from my past. I was running a temperature so I was confined to bed in the room for sick people down the hall. I would hear everyone two floors down clunk out in ski boots and parkas to learn to ski on the ski hill right outside. There was a 1 3/4 inch Dacron rope driven by the engine from an old pickup that drove in but never drove out. You would side-step your way next to the rope which was dragging along the ground. You pick it up letting it slide through your special rope tow mittens with the leather palms. You positioned your skies in the tracks of all the other skiers before you, take hold of the rope loosely in front and behind your back. You would slowly tighten your grip, start to get pulled along, then lean back a bit to allow a little springiness then grab tight, and up the hill you went. At the top, the rope would go up and over a pulley and head back down to the engine room. But I was in the room for sick people hearing California Dreamin' on the GE 7-transistor radio, every 45 minutes or so, trying to remember the silence of the rope tow, gliding uphill with no effort, it was so quiet among the pine trees, you could hear it snow.

My favourite U2 song, but there are so many of them. One of the grrats from.the 80s and 90s. Bono is outspoken and really cares about social justice. He's done so much for so many people, using his fame to help others. There are dozens of their songs You could pick; they've won 22 Grammys.
