- Criss Cross Quiz was a hugely popular British television quiz show based upon noughts and crosses.
It copied the format of the long-running American game show Tic Tac Dough produced by NBC. The two shows shared the same opening titles animation (except for the name) and the same incidental music.
The British version was produced by Granada Television in Manchester and I believe it was shown by every one of the ITV regional franchise holders across the UK. The programme began on 17th June 1957 and ran until 22nd September 1967. Granada was, at the time, the weekday ITV contractor for the wider north of England region which at the time included Yorkshire (Yorkshire Television did not start until 1968 when the northern ITV was split in two).
Initially Criss Cross Quiz was hosted by actor and presenter Jeremy Hawk, but Barbara Kelly took over the reins in 1963. These were the days when contestants in quiz shows really knew their stuff.
A children's TV version Junior Criss Cross Quiz was also produced between 1957 and 1967.
If the show had been made in the 21st Century by Channel 5 it would doubtless have been called something crass like Criss Cross Dosh or Noughts and Doshes.
Jeremy Hawk is the father of Belinda Lang (who currently plays Mrs Clam in The Sister Boniface Mysteries and father-in-law of Hugh Fraser who plays Captain Hastings in Poirot).
Imagine winning 62540 pounds if the outer boxes were worth 40 pounds & the center box was worth 60 pounds
On most quizzes these days the contestants struggle to remember their name, let alone answer a question of this difficulty.
Indeed!
I got it. We did at school. Mind you I’m old, it was quite a new poem then, all the kids were digging it.
Imagine winning 32120 pounds or 32140 pounds if someone who served in the uk won 42 matches
£1160 bought you a pretty good house back then, maybe not in most parts of West London, Surrey or Berkshire, but in most other areas.
True! That's big money ...
Jeremy Hawk was Belinda Lang's father. Bob "Blockbusters" Holness was one of the hosts of the junior version.
Oh interesting!
Although I remember Junior Criss Cross Quiz I'm just a bit too young to remember who was who. Didn't know Bob was a host!
And Belinda Lang is married to Hugh Fraser. Quite an acting family.
I was just about to give the same answer........but he beat me to it
😃
Me mam would never miss it
Nice! For my part I can only just remember it - I was six when it went finished.
If I am remembering correctly, the question categories on the Criss Cross Quiz board would on occasion change, rolling around like the destination blinds on a bus.
@@trevordance5181 Ah - thank you. I didn't remember that!
And if in the bonus game they hit the dragon slayer or criss & cross or something, they win the 200 pounds automatically & the prize package
Wish you brought it back in the 80s & make the outer boxes 40 pounds & the center box 60 pounds then have the winner earn 200 or more pounds plus some prizes while trying to get to 200 pounds or more while trying to avoid a dragon or a cat or some creature
And if a champion wins 5 matches he or she wins a holiday or a car
