Been working on just my backside barrel riding for this winter and it was really tough at first I kept getting smashed by the lip from not dragging my arm high enough in the wave… but it’s paying off now. He’s dead on about full commitment it’s like throwing yourself over a ledge rather then stalling then driving for speed like normal surfing but once you get a few good ones it will click.
At the young age of 56 and after 40 plus years of surfing I'm still learning, Thanks for the tips Nic! Backside barrels have always been challenging for me. I have a 5' 8" asymmetrical quad mini Simmons being glassed at this very moment. Can not wait to get in the water (late Nov in Costa Rica) and give your tips a try. Have you any experience with asymmetrical boards.
It would be great to hear some best practices on coming back to the line up, e.g. going through the crashed waves (duck dive), use currents/lifts etc. As an intermediate (below intermediate) surfer I am seriously struggling with it when waves are 8+ feet strong. Thank you again for your amazing content, it just "lift you up"! 🔥
Probably the best example and video lesson ever. Great job! Palm ten . Goofy foot'n since I was 7! Why be regular...... love switch! On my snowboard...lol. Switch barrels, that's the top level Donkey Kong right there. Jus't say'n....
"new" ideia for how to: besides have calm, the best ways to fall into a huge wave. I saw some videos of nathan florence explaning some, but i would love to see nick showing his falling skills techniques haha. Cheers
My surfing is getting better. I’ve been dropping in late lately because of these Lully waves. My 8’ soft top digs into the water with its nose. So I try to paddle side ways into the wave for these ones.
So sick! The Nias wave is incredible. It shows all the committment needed. Thanks for sharing this video. It makes me believe with all your tips I am not going with the lip next time :D
thanks for the tips Von Nic, so where’s your next trip too? don’t know if you been to the skeleton bay and pimped those barrels, their long ones, love your videos !
Love the froth! Trying to push myself in bigger waves this year. I'm still surfing stock dimension profomance squash tails! Would be soo sick to get some insight into your quiver and board selections on sep ups ect.. for those 6ft + days xx yeeww
Nic JOB is the best backside barrel rider in my humble opinion. He absolutely sends it on pipe on a foamie and does it with such style.

Gutes Video
Ass dragging no better to describe it keeping it real ✊🏽🤙🏽
My major problem with pigdogging is the back foot gets knocked off, either stalling or by the foam ball. Made a couple goat boating haha.
I always ass drag while spooning my yogurt.
