It's a fantastic book. Highly recommended for anyone who loves the iron history. I'm interviewing Nicholas tomorrow and have tried to construct questions that build on the this interview with John
I work at a university and also talk to a lot of younger guys in my gym..it seems the two classic era bodybuilders they gravitate towards are Mentzer and Platz. Most of the other greats like Zane or Dickerson they never heard of.
This guy is absolutely right about Arnold - In my opinion being from that era, Arnold was the only Bodybuilder from the Golden Era with absolutely no comradery with other Bodybuilders, He always resorted to cunning, trickery and deceiving and using others and even humiliating like he did with Ferrigno in front of his parents in Pumping Iron. - Thanks for the Video.
we trained next to Arnold ,i was saddened when Arnold never attended Dr Franco.s funeral ,however he did attend the famous NIKI LAUDAS FUNERAL IN EUROPE 3 MTHS EARLIER,yes Arnold only chases people with Money and power ,the bodybuilding industry are blind,Arnold was the best, but at any price ,he F....... off a lot of people .
Not true at all. For all my criticism of Arnold in my various writings and videos, Arnold valued and maintained many of his close friendships with his Bodybuilding pals over the years - from Franco to Paul Graham, Sven Thorsen, Wag Bennett etc etc etc. He knew better than to burn bridges in a network that was pivotal to his success You may despise Arnold, but it's still fine to give credit when it's due.
@@carvedouttastone when Paul Graham was arrested in hawaii in the late 60,s early 70,s (spent 6 yrs in container island federal penitentiary)Arnold was in that Mustang and was not questioned by Police,Mike metzners FATHER IN LAW,was the one involved ,you give credit about bodybuilding, thats fine ,but friendship ,it was only, hear say ,we all have that kind of friendship in our past.when your that wealthy everyone wants to be your friend..Arnold is always for Arnold ,nothing new .
Please correct me if I misunderstood this: Mentzer attained his great physique with traditional high volume bodybuilding-style training. He later maintained it with high intensity low volume training and this was when he became prolific and philosophical about that style of training.
i bought his books 1996 and i remember you could have a phone consultation with him but it cost i believe 200$ that was a lot to me then ! and right when i was getting ready to do it he got sick and that was it.
Mentzer DID NOT die 'almost forgotten'! The last 5 years of his life, he was more active and popular than he'd been since the 1980 Mr. Olympia. His Personal Training business was booming. He and his brother Ray were filming HIT Training professionally. His time being recognized and working with then Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates added to his Mike's rising from the ashes. Mike was writing articles for Flex & Muscular Development. Mike was arguably MORE popular then compared to his competitive heyday.
hey john im really enjoying this interview the more this guy talks about the book the more intrested im getting. mike was a little bit before my time but not much as first show here in the uk i went to watch lee haney was guest posing back in 83. would you be able to post a link please john where it will be available to buy.
Mike was all about objectivism but he was also delusional Mike was drugged out of his mind and doing gay for pay. He was a great bodybuilder but not great philosopher in my opinion he thought Ayn Rand was the fountain of truth. If you don’t know this Ayn Rands core belief was her belief in selfishness 😂
Nope. Nothing new. The same old bs from this guy that's been said by every other mentzer geek ever... About 10 minutes into the interview the guy starts in on Arnold, what a terrible person arnold is but mentzer is full of virtue. Then the matter of fact, forgone conclusion that HIT is scientifically proven to be superior blah blah blah. Same old nonsense. Can't mike exist on his own? Or does his existence matter only in comparison to Arnold? It's truly bizarre and more than a little pathetic.
@Rob-qn6od: Once again, more incoherent nonsense from a disturbed, willfully ignorant nutcase who has been polluting youtube with his idiotic rhetoric for over 15 years with multiple accounts which continues under this account (and others) for now. He can never back up his views and has to resort to fantasies that can be found in Dr Suess books or the bottom of a public toliet that hasn't been flushed in months. His obsession of Cokenegger expands his deteriorated mind into the abyss. Whenever he is faced with hard facts opposing his hero, he's like a freaking deer caught in a headlight before he hit with a speeding automobile. Dumbnegger is the culmination of his stupid existence

Fascinating insight, would have been great fun researching for the book. A true enthusiast 💪
😮😮😮, GAAAAD DAMMMMN, John be having some 🔥🔥🔥 interviews, man. This author is Off The Chain with it.
AWESOME interview, can't wait for Part 2!!!

The man showed loyalty to his close friends, even if it was for his own advantage.
Hell ya.. FIRRRRME INTERVIEW..THANK JOHN
Mike Mentzer would be proud!
Thank you Mr John for your persistent efforts!!!
Excellent Read! A Must Have For Any Mentzer Fan! 💯
Mike Mentzer was a great bodybuilder
Please correct me if I misunderstood this: Mentzer attained his great physique with traditional high volume bodybuilding-style training. He later maintained it with high intensity low volume training and this was when he became prolific and philosophical about that style of training.
Yep. No-one ever built a good physique with hit alone.
@@WilliamLagakos I asked Nicholas this question in our interview yesterday what he found based on talking to Mentzer's friends and his research

something different thanks!
So far so good. Randomly thumbing through, page 274 is interesting.

Where did Ken Waller , Robby, Bill Grant fit in this story...
👍
It’s funny that he uses Ayn Rand as an example of how Arnold views intelligence since Mike Mentzer himself was a Rand fan and mention Rand himself
This guy talks a lot.. haha. John cant get a word in..
As I've said before , Mike was too smart for his own good.
