My house is down a small private, no exit drive shared with a number of houses (mostly houses that were built and owned by the original property owner and family). Our sewer water isn't directly hooked up to the public sewer mains. Instead, when the place was built, they hooked it up to a small pump house, which our neighbours now charge us 'maintenance fees' for. I don't know how legit that is, but I moved in after the arrangement was set up. They claim they have to do yearly maintenance on it, but I've never seen them do it. I did, however, see one of their vehicles roll down their drive and smash into the pump house because they didn't put on their parking break.

Ollie, you mentioned about the Cicada living under the earth for a while... well, a Cicada actually lives 5 - 9yrs underground as "nymphs" before they emerge to shed that shell and pump blood into their wings. You have probably seen the nymphs when digging around a tree, they look a little like a wingless slow cockroach 🪳
They emerge after all that time underground to try and mate with females so the females can grow eggs and get them to the ground in the 3 week above ground life that have!
They have a pretty challenging life!
