"On any other day that might seem strange." Love Cage's dry delivery. Con Air hits some pretty ridiculous heights and makes the most of a stacked cast.
I watched this in the cinema when it first released. NO in the theatre could breathe wile Buscemi was with the little girl. When you see the girl waving at the plane, there was this enormous sigh of relief...
If Jen was in prison, you all know she'd be the equivalent of Red from Shawshank - she's the one you go to to get contraband from outside. Either that, or she's the one who swans around in a silk smoking jacket on her own private floor, because she used her heisting stash to pay the guards for priveliges, so now she's Mrs Big and desn't have to do work parties.
Con Air is a silly over the top action film with some dark humour. Very 90s. Very enjoyable! A hand-in-hand accompanyment with that other 90s movie The Rock ❤
According to Terry Farrell (Meaney’s co-star on DS9), Colm had a clause in his contract with Paramount that allowed him to be in movies while the show was in production, even if it included his character being absent for a few episodes. Con Air might’ve been one of those movies.
I remember watching this in the theaters when it came out and when the reveal that the propeller had cut off Johnny 23s arm was revealed to this day I remember the audience 'applauded' !
I like to think that Steve Buscemi's character was somehow miraculously rehabilitated by his encounter with the little girl. I like the actor too much to ever see him as a bad guy.
Jen, you are the best YT reactor ever! Timely comments, editing impeccable, super friendly personality and engagement with the audience....keep up the great work and thank you for everything you do! Cheers
Regarding your question of whether or not Poe would've been convicted: Highly doubtful because of where they are. Alabama has a 'Stand Your Ground' statute, so Poe would have no 'duty to retreat' in the event that he & his wife (who is pregnant, no less) are accosted by drunk bar patrons. Now, in a few US states, their laws regarding self-defense are collectively known as 'duty to retreat'. In those states, a defendant claiming self-defense would have to first prove that retreating from the conflict was not possible, and there was no other option but self-defense. So if Poe was in, say, Maryland? He'd have to convince a jury that retreat/de-escalation was impossible... (Personally, I can't imagine convicting a man defending himself & his pregnant wife from three aggressive assailants who followed him out to the parking lot. But legally speaking...)
The lack of a knife as evidence (Poe's word vs the 2 survivors because Trisha went inside for help) would make 'no retreat' a less viable defense in court, unfortunately. It's not always what is right, but what can be proved to a jury.
The realistic part is that America is known for not giving military vets any sufficient support after leaving active service, hence why Poe was given such an incompetent lawyer A half-competent lawyer would have known about those laws and urged Poe to plead not guilty due to them
In a movie full of over the top action and impossible situations the least believable part to me is Cameron Poe getting convicted and sent to jail like he was. I feel like we're missing a scene where it turns out the judge knew one of the assailants and was corrupt or something.
You think O'Brien swears here? You should hear him in The Barrytown Trilogy: The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van. The Commitments is a stone-cold classic.
The law portrayed in "Con Air" regarding Cameron Poe's sentence is debatable on a few points: * **Self-Defense:** The movie implies Poe's actions were purely self-defense after a fight escalated. While the details are fuzzy, a strong self-defense case could lead to a lighter sentence or even no charges. * **Military Background:** The judge implies Poe should have shown more restraint due to his military training. Legally, this doesn't hold much weight. The law applies equally regardless of profession, though some argue veterans face harsher penalties in reality [ * **Plea Bargain:** Poe pleads guilty to manslaughter, likely to get a shorter sentence. Plea bargains are common, but the movie doesn't explore if a better deal might have been possible. Overall, "Con Air" simplifies the legal system for dramatic effect. The portrayal of Poe's sentence is questionable, but the true verdict would depend on the specifics of the fight and his legal representation.

Garland Greene simply "found God and was healed" if you will, or had some sort of epiphany, when he and the little girl sang "He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands". Greene is an introspective, intelligent, self-aware sociopath, and no medical or psychiatric professional could figure him out and treat him because their approach lacked the simplicity of a children's hymn to something outside Greene's sociopathic self. The scene with him and the girl even starts out with them sitting opposite each other like a psychologist and their patient would, she asks whether he's sick and takes any medication, but then she asks him to sing with her, and his expression while singing speaks volumes. That's at least what I make of his arc.

Another over the top 90's action flick is "Deep Rising" (1998) with Treat Williams, Famke Janssen and Kevin J. O'Connor. Its more of an action-horror movie with a bit of cheese and big explosions. From the same director as "The Mummy" (1999), and "The Mummy Returns" (2001), and "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" (2009). The last one is also a great action film.
Danny Trejo was interviewed on the excellent How Did This Get Made. He was asked out of all these villains, which actor was the "tough guy" and he responded John Cusack ! "There was something off with that cat." More Malkovich - Being John Malkovich - just bonkers Dangerous Liasons - Glenn Close, Michelle Pffiefer and a very young Uma Thurman and Keanu - gorgeous sexy period drama
I'll just note that it's quite amusing how even with his relative lack of screentime at this point in Next Gen, Colm Meany has still managed to become Miles O'Brien to you. And I do believe the rest of the time, they just tell him to be Irish
18:07 -- RE: "Imagine O'Brien just droppin' the F-Bombs on TNG..."; A: *LMAO* well yeah, perhaps it isn't that much of a stretch given the degree to which "O'Brien Must Suffer" and let's not forget he has a proper dose of PTSD from fighting against the Cardassians, a characteristic which requires many angry cathartic words plus self-reflection. That's yet another reason to watch DS9 in my mind, just to see an O'Brien who is simultaneously capable of employing this type of ordinance while also restraining himself because he has a strong support system in his family and Starfleet.
^^ Side Question: Jen, have you ever seen "The Joy Luck Club" (1993)? Reason I ask -- one of the cast members is Rosalind Chao, who plays Keiko O'Brien....
Steve Buscemi chewing the scenery was a delight. He is such an underrated actor, and his character creeped me out as a kid when I watched this for the first time. Fun fact - the co-pilot who gets shot is Marty McSorley, formmer NHL defenceman.
When training for state level martial arts competition(s), (many years of continuous training) we were informed that if we used our skills on the general public, a court would consider it the same as using a deadly weapon. I later taught at an officers military school as an unarmed combat instructor. *Legally when fighting you must use a 'proportional' response.* _That can be difficult when a single blow can be lethal or permanently injure._
Awesome thumbnail as always , movies like these were made for a Jen reaction and this one is 🔥 so much fun and some of Jen's favourite things 💥💥 everyone is in for a treat 🔥💙🔥💙
We don't know the specifics about the Buscemi's character's murders but I think he spared her life because she didn't run away. She talked to him, drank tea with him, sang with him. They had a friendly encounter.
Garland seems very introspective (if a bit cold) about himself and his actions. He may be trying to reform. This is kinda the only way I can take his 'happy ending' as not horrifying 😅
Garland Greene simply "found God and was healed" if you will, or had some sort of epiphany, when he and the little girl sang "He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands". I was also surprised to see Colm Meany in this film,in this role he was very good, nice to see him play a totally different character from TNG and DS9.
1:55 No, it’s not true. The laws are the same. Military background can constitute disparity of force, i.e. the protagonist is much stronger than an opponent and should have not escalated. But there were three of them, they assaulted him and pulled a knife on him. So disparity of force argument is actually in favor of the protagonist. And he didn’t even escalate, he didn’t pull a gun on them and not even his own knife, which would have been completely justifiable. He would have gotten no charge or would have been acquitted by judge/jury. Especially in Alabama at that period. This sentence was just needed for the plot to happen. “One’s body is a deadly weapon” (for military/martial artists) is a misinterpretation of disparity of force argument, basically a myth. No such thing.
You're 100% right on the outcome but the procedure would still be different as he was an active duty officer in uniform at the time so he would had been tried by a military court, not a civilian one, which does have more stringent rules and regulations especially for Special Forces personnel. He'd have been acquitted regardless but just wanted to point that out.
@@jeremygilbert7989good catch, indeed. But by the “your body is a deadly weapon” they usually (and in the movie, too) mean some sort of special treatment by the “civilian” law, which is not the case.
The knife was removed from the scene, so it would be Poe's word against the 2 survivors. Not that it justifies his sentencing, but it would be harder to convince a jury that deadly defense was necessary without evidence of a knife.
35:55 Fun fact. They really put the plane through the entrance of the casino. This was moved up in production when the found out the Sands was going to be demolished to build the Venetian. The sands was already closed so they let them smash it up with the plane.

Nic Cage in one of his best Nic Cagey roles ridiculous but awesome Malhkovich , Cusack and Colm Meaney all deliver as usual It was great to fly JEN AIR today with a great flick Keep them coming Jen. Night 😊
Hello Jen!😊 Typically that is not how someone in the military would be tried. His military service would more likely be a positive factor in his case. But, you are at the mercy of the judge and his personal opinion. I knew I recommended this one a year ago when you watched "The Rock".😉"Face/Off" (1997) with Cage and Travolta is a wild film.
"Con Air" is a blast, and super star-studded with studly gentlemen. Colm Meany swore a bunch in "The Commitments", an early film role for him playing the band manager's Elvis loving father ("That's fookin' blasphemy! Elvis wasn't a Cajun!"). Prime Nic Cage action flick, very hard to top.
The reason Steve Buscemi’s character wouldn’t harm the little girl is because, as a murderous psychopath, he judges people according to their personality. The girl is too young to have formed options and assertions. She’s innocent. Bereft of Iil -will. He enjoyed spending time with someone as pure as her. Someone he didn’t have to judge.
For some more Colm Meaney, Jen needs to look at "The Commitments", "The Snapper" and "The Van". He's also a Pilot (with an English accent) in "Die Hard 2"...
By far the most ridiculous part of this movie is that Cameron is in prison at all. Are you seriously trying to tell me that, in the Southern US, a decorated veteran defends a four-on-one attack against himself and a pregnant woman where the attackers are armed, and isn't instantly acquitted? Hell, lots of juries would have awarded him everything those guys owned in damages. And no, the concept of 'being a deadly weapon' (or indeed licened to kill) and therefore held to a different standard is pure fiction. The prosecution might well argue that a veteran should have a higher degree of judgement than a civilian, as to the necessity for deadly force, but defence would just point to the circumstances and say 'what, that doesn't qualify?'. Cameron's lawyer would have had to TRY to throw the case to get a result like this.
On a trip to the US last year we stopped at "Lerner Airfield" (Wendover Airfield, UT) where the empty swimming pool and Con Air plane are still there. You can even walk right on the plane and have a look around!
My favorite thing I've ever hear related to this movie was someone empathizing for Mykelti Williamson saying it was the second time in a few years he had to die in the arms of a feeble minded southern man.

Fun fact Jen, the old man hiding under the truck with Nic is Dabbs Geer. He played old Paul Edgecombe in the Green Mile.
Danny Trejo was interviewed on the excellent How Did This Get Made. He was asked out of all these villains, which actor was the "tough guy" and he responded John Cusack ! "There was something off with that cat."
More Malkovich - Being John Malkovich - just bonkers
Dangerous Liasons - Glenn Close, Michelle Pffiefer and a very young Uma Thurman and Keanu - gorgeous sexy period drama
CON AIR is awesome fun. Me and my friends used to quote the bunny line to each other all the time in school.
Something about his inflection or accent just makes that line so quotable: "I said: 'Put the bunny back in the box.' " 🐇📥
John Malkovich should have gotten an Academy Award for his portrayal of Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom.
It's just standard Malkovich-ian over pronunciation 😉
If you want to watch another movie with John Cusack then I’d really suggest Grosse Point Blank… it’s utterly brilliant 👍🏻😃
Good assassin black-comedy.
great cast, too.
I'll just note that it's quite amusing how even with his relative lack of screentime at this point in Next Gen, Colm Meany has still managed to become Miles O'Brien to you. And I do believe the rest of the time, they just tell him to be Irish
I'm glad you got around to this one. This is a 90s classic, with the best quotes and plenty of explosions for you Jen 😅
I LOVE how long you spent waiting for an explosion. Like you were disappointed...then you got to the 3rd Act lol
Wow, all these stars are so young in this!
Jen Murray's, "got the whole world in her hands 🎶 🎵 " ✈️
I'm thinkin' I'm gonna need a video of Jen singing 'How Do I Live'!!! ❤
Great reaction Jen!
I saw this 1 in theaters back in grade 8...it became 1 of my faves & still is!
Such a fun cast!
John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeifer, Glenn Close, Uma Thurman-Dangerous Liaisons!
“Obrian!!” You can always spot a Trekkie!! Love it!!!
O'Brien as far as I know is the first character to curse on Star Trek DS9. He says "Bollocks"
cant wait until she gets to DS9. she'll see more of o'brien and worf, likable ferengi, and Odo.
13:02
He took out the transponder and connected it to an external battery to bamboozle the law with fake airplane location.
Nicholas Cage went from filming directly to filming “Face/Off”
Saw this movie in the cinema back in 97,CAGE's films were pretty good back then, now most of his stuff is direct to video, but,I'm stiill a fan of his tho. I was also surprised to see Colm Meany in this film,in this role he was very good, nice to see him play a totally different character from TNG and DS9.

Best moment in any movie ever
Hey Jen, I like your air guitar and sound effect skills 😊
Stellar cast, more explosions, more jackpot, more cheezy, more fun. Great job. I wanna see Jen sing 😀

No, it’s not true.
@@CallOfCutie69 Yeah that was clearly done for cinematic purposes
The knife was removed from the scene, so it would be Poe's word against the 2 survivors. Not that it justifies his sentencing, but it would be harder to convince a jury that deadly defense was necessary without evidence of a knife.
“Damn it, Picard! The engine will be fuckn’ done when it’s done!”
35:55 Fun fact. They really put the plane through the entrance of the casino. This was moved up in production when the found out the Sands was going to be demolished to build the Venetian. The sands was already closed so they let them smash it up with the plane.
The over the top action is what i expect from a 90's action flick and this delivers in Spades !!
Nic Cage in one of his best Nic Cagey roles ridiculous but awesome
Malhkovich , Cusack and Colm Meaney all deliver as usual
It was great to fly JEN AIR today with a great flick
Keep them coming Jen.
Night 😊
Cage has done a lot of great stuff but this film is just sooo much fun. A gathering of great actors throughout too!
Jen, another good flick with O’Brian swearing up a storm .. Layer Cake.. add that to your watchlist.
SO seconded!
My personal fave of his is The Commitments. I'm hoping these will be covered at some point.
There's always The Road to Wellville
@@chefskiss6179 The Commitments is such a good movie
@@RickLeMon Even though it was a smaller part, I always enjoyed disliking him in Far and Away.
I like his character in hell on wheels.
Probably my favorite "Die Hard on an X" of the 90s.Malkovich is definitely the best fake Hans Gruber.
Every time I see John Malkovic I think of him as that “Jumped up Frenchman”
I always tear up at the ending hug from the baby girl. 🥲
He "drove through 3 states wearing one girl's head as a hat"...
He wasn't an opportunistic killer, he was an impulsive one. He only did it when he felt like it, meaning it could have gone either way with the girl.
Seek help.
@@RUclipsissokewl😂
Another 90s classic
32:00 "On any other day, that might seem strange."
😄
I love con air
more explosions = louder Jen -- not a bad thing at all -- fun reaction!
The Last Boy Scout is a great Bruce Willis accion movie similar to this one.
🏆 Written by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon 1-4). "We're getting beat up by the inventors of Scrabble [TM]." 😂😂😂
On a trip to the US last year we stopped at "Lerner Airfield" (Wendover Airfield, UT) where the empty swimming pool and Con Air plane are still there. You can even walk right on the plane and have a look around!
This movie is so much fun. All Star cast. Great reaction Jen!!
Jen:"I wonder if there are gonna be any explosions in this?"🤔💭💥
Yep!🤣👏
Great 90's blast,great reaction Jen.😊
Sshhh now.🤫😁
"ITS OBRIAN!!" said all of us trek fans when we 1st seen this movie haha fav engineer hands down
My favorite thing I've ever hear related to this movie was someone empathizing for Mykelti Williamson saying it was the second time in a few years he had to die in the arms of a feeble minded southern man.
if you like colm meaney you will love him in LAYER CAKE with daniel craig which is also the film that was responsible for getting daniel craig the 007 gig
