Thanks to Facebook marketplace, I was able to make an amazing score of old tools. It filled up the back of the van with the seats folded down! This was the one and only time it has happened to me.
Last weekend at an estate sale I got 2 great deals. A Stanley no 71 with all 3 cutters (Pre WW2) for $6, and a set of Ashley Isles gouges (9 of them) with a tool roll for $24. A very lucky day.
I've had a saw with a lovely scene painted on the plate. I just sharpened it and started using it. Overtime, the scene went from something made by Bob Ross to Van Gogh to Picasso. In addition to the Can I Have It auction group, there is also a Can I Have It trade group. Have a surplus of number 5 planes? You might be able to trade it to someone for a saw.
Hello James. Pecan Park Flea Market in Jacksonville, FL always has a booth set up that stocks old hand tools and their prices are fairly reasonable. I try to go by there every time I visit my daughter.
A couple times a year Lucasville Ohio has a huge trade days. They have a lot of antique everything including tools. I went a couple weeks ago and got an awesome saw tooth setter $10. It was so unique I had to email James to verify that’s what it was lol.
Fantastic tips, James! Thanks a lot! 😃 The place I'm living in is a bit far from Sao Paulo, but I may go there some day! 😃 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Craigslist in my area is rife with people who vastly over value the tools that they have. Like asking $170 for a no6 plane in rough shape. Or $50 for a no name no3 size plane
That is most every ware. people think because it is old it is worth a lot. I normally message them early explaining what I do and then offer them a price that is what i normally pay for it. they reject the price. then I come back a month later and offer the same price and they take it. as long as I am respectful and kind with the wording it work 90% of the time.
James, I paused the video near the end to go to the kitchen drink some water and kept thinking... There's a fair here at my city where some times some hand tools show up... It's not every time, but I've seen some there in the past. They call it "feira do rolo", which would be something like "exchange fair" in English... But, anyway, people sell everything there. From clothes to electronics to farm animals and so on. LOL I used to go there to buy broken computer printers for parts. You know? There are some great little motors inside those printers to make stuff. (I even made my own dremel tool with one of those motors! LOL) But I don't know the exact address right now. I'm going to find out and give it to you. I don't know if it's been happening, because of the pandemonium either, so... Oh well. I find out and tell you. 😊
Okay. Now I can find probably all the tools I want. Now I need a video on making more money to afford more tools. Great video very helpful for feeding my addiction.
Please consider Ed's Tool Store at the Woodwright's Shop - www.woodwrightschool.com/the-tool-store Ed Lebetkin is a great guy and very knowledgeable about old tools. He cleans, restores, sharpens, and makes sure you get a quality tool. Call him up and ask him what you are looking for; he can tell you if he has it or, if not, where you might look next. Ed's the next best thing to talking to Roy Underhill :) (Ok, well maybe Bill Anderson is ...) The tools that Ed sells are in great shape, sharp and ready to go. No, you're not going to score a vintage router plane (with blade) for $30, but what you spend will be well worth it. Plus you support a connoisseur of the trade during a troubling time for these businesses.
Flea market and antique stores anywhere in New England. Had a guy offer me every plane in his shop for $300 unfortunately I didn't have the funds. Something like 40 planes...sigh
Hey James, I’ve got one for your map. Tools 4 U, 806 Airport Road, Bismarck ND, 58504. Was there yesterday, bought my first spokeshave, and a v-carve tool. Very nice fellow. Contact me if you need to.
Check out the Facebook group "Axe junkies". Nothing but axes and adzes. My best deal was I paid $220 for black raven Kelly Connecticut pattern axe. I drove 500miles round trip to get it in one day. Wife wasn't happy
One source I use is shopgoodwill.com you never know what is going to be on there sometimes not much sometimes there are nice vintage tools. I found a Disston D23 that was stainless steel, Disston did not produce any D23 hand saws as a production item this saw was a prototype I've also seen Stanley #2 s
@@WoodByWrightHowTo The only thing is as you know goodwill sells anything donated so they might not know what it is sometimes so you have to broaden your search some time such as vintage tool, wood working tool, and so on.
Please don't remove the painting from the saw. Many fine artists from the Midwest in the great depression and later painted on saws. It might be very rare but a few have been painted by very famous artists. I know you want to return the saw to service but you may inadvertently remove from existence a rare painting

That kind of hall only comes every few years for me. great times though.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo I posted it on the Hand planes making and collecting group. I believe you said you're a member of that one as well. 🙂
Lol at the timing on these videos between you and Rex. Excellent complementary videos. :D
Lol great minds.
Thanks, James! Always good to know where to look!

There should be a site like reverb.com for hand tools.
there are a few groups that do that but I have not found a site yet. I might have to make one.
