I didn't realize how much schmusing was going on when it comes to hand tools. Thanks for showing this awesome event. even though I am probably lucky that it's so very far away from me. Thanks for sharing, James!
Great informative video!... I just joined so I can go to the local meet here in the Minneapolis area but the national meet looks like a pretty great event!
I would love to have something like that here in Brazil as well. 😕 Seems pretty fun! Who knows some day... Right? Thanks for the video, James! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Unfortunately, I haven't found any particular tool mates in the UK. There are several tool stores that are dedicated to antique tools but nothing quite like this. The occasionally you do have some pop-up sales from time to time.
Lucky you. There are two places I know of to buy old tools where I am. There is no real culture of making things so the tools are typically decorative or for collectors. When the sellers see an expat the price always skyrockets. At one I saw an unusual plane with a blade nearly 4 inches wide and a short wooden body. The asking price for me was around $200. Naturally I passed on that, I later found that a whole range of wooden planes could be brought brand new from the local hardware at prices starting around $15. The plane I use is an old Pope, (a Stanley No4 clone) which I brought at a flea market in Sydney Australia. I got two of them for $20 and manged to get one good plane out of them. I'm pretty restricted space wise so I don't have much in the way of tools but I manage.
quick question about the tools gate sale, does it still require to be a member to go there, if so does it also require some kind of entrance paid fee, and if I were to bring an extra person does to any of the meets from tales gate to auction meets? Does that person also need to be a member or do will that need extra payment at the entrance?
You have to be a member. That is so we do not have to worry about insurance or taxes as we would if it was open tot he general public. If one person is a member they can bring a guest. but the guest also pays their own entrance fee. There is also an entrance free as this is not just a tool show but a whole conference with events to cover. Some of the smaller local meets only have a $5-$10 entrance fee and there are some that can do it for free. the membership also covers a bunch of other benefits and regular publications that are fantastic! on top of that members get early invites to meets and tool shows with a discounted early rate. Paying at the door is always WAY more.
It's on the website. When you become a member of the MWTCA they will send out invites about a month or two before it. On the website there are two different lists. One of them for local events and one of them for the national meets.
We in india don't have access to such market..I guess we just have to satisfy ourselves only by watching you guys and hoping someday we can get hold of some the tools 😭
I do not know of any UK collecting groups. But I do know of many sources in the UK to buy hand tools as well as several antique hand tool only stores. You can see the map on handtoolfinder.com
There are some. But not many. Most people younger than 30 aren't interested in hand tools. That's something that usually comes down the line a little ways. After a while wood working with power tools. But there are a few that find it earlier.
Most hand tool sites are run by people who have no idea how to search engine optimize anything. And they end up being buried deep five or six pages down on some really weird searches.
That's mostly the crowd that sits around me lol before I started coming to most of these events the youngest people in the room were in their '70s. I've been trying to turn more people on to the collecting organizations and the average age has been slowly coming down.

You should look up the collecting group in Australia. They occasionally do tool meets.
Thanks for this info as I need a couple of good drawknives. I also realize I may need to take someone who hears better to get something at the auction
Love this
Thank you for the warning.
The warning at the end 😂🤣😂
thanks
I really enjoyed your vids. I’m a tool junkie!
I need to to make a shirt that says that!
James, do you have the list of those dots on the maps?
Yes. You can find them at www.handtoolfinder.com

I don't see the Bowling Green, KY meet on the list. Can you let me know when and where it's at?

Yeah. I have not found many resources at all for India. I'm sure there are some but I have no idea where to look for him.
if im with 2 other people that arent members, but i am a member, are they allowed in?
That depends on which meat you're going to. But most of them offer a guest pass so you can bring in a non-member as long as they pay the door fee
I thought you said the MWTCA link was down here...
It is the very first link in the description.

Sometimes it sucks being in California. I dont think theres anything like that here.
There is a whole collecting organization dedicated to California. PAST.

Thanks a bunch man!
Why are there so many young people at auction?
Sorry. Not sure what you're asking. It's the same group of people who are at the tool sale and the rest of the meat who are at the auction.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo I mean, the people here don't seem to be young.
