- In this episode Flea Market Tool Finds Tony, Pete, and Eliot take a trip to the Malvern Flea Market for some Tool Thrifting.
They arrive at the Three Counties Showground and after a quick bite to eat the guys head out to look at tools
Tony then finds loads of handles, and antique tools from a fellow carpenter named Bob who has been coming to the showgrounds for the past 25 years.
Tony then stumbles upon a decorators box, they also find a chalk line for Eliot
Pete then puts his negotiating skills to the test, Tony finds and reflects on his first tools in carpentry and later finds an antique drill for Eliot
Pete and Tony reminisce over an old Tonka toy truck, then Tony finds an old joinery arch and reflects on his time doing laminations, next Tony finds an old Stanley hammer
Then Tony takes in a haul of various tools like chisels, plum bob, and a saw
After an ice cream break they layout their tool haul and go through their experience at the flea market
Their haul consists of: Wood plane, Marking gauge, plum bobs, chalk line, spoke shave, Stanley knives, Tenon Saw, pin hammers, chisels, Tonka truck, all for about £100!

Still got 2 Yankee screwdrivers the big and middle size ones , also had to use one of those egg whisk drills to drill into blocks when I was an apprentice as we didn’t have and power on-site , it had the big shoulder stock on it , gave up on the end and used a rawl plug tool

Tony and Pete, you are so spot on. Buying good quality, well looked after, second hand tools, is definitely the way to go. Brand new chisels and planes are not generally usable from the packet, the steel is inferior poorly cast. When planes were made 50 plus years ago they were cast and then left for up to 12 months to stop movement (similar to when wood dries out and seasons). Only then we're the surfaces machined and ground flat. I bought a brand new Stanley block plane 10 years ago and it took me three days to get the bed flat on sandpaper glued to glass. Thanks for the great video, looks like I need to book a trip to the next event.👋😁
Hi Fred it’s an incredible place to go definitely worth a few trips in a year, I’am going to the first spring one because Pete always says it’s has even more stock have a awesome week all the best Tony 👍 PS loved learning about the old planes standing for 12 months never know that.
@@BuildWithAE Tony, the same applies to castings made in all sorts of industries. Cast iron engine blocks were deliberately left outside to heat and cool in the weather to relieve the stresses in the casting. I know your busy but a quick search for cast steel seasoning helped me see what makes good and bad tools. Rex Kruger on RUclips did a great video two weeks ago, trying to tune up a Chinese plane. 10ish minutes in he talks about seasoning. Stay safe friend.
@@fredsmith6725 a massive thank you for sharing this Fred I love this kind of stuff much appreciated will definitely check it out 👍
