I feel like folks (myself included) tend to forget how INCREDIBLE prime SFAT was. Pushing Hungrybox to the full distance in a best of 5 during this era, the PewFAT reign of terror in doubles, and just setting himself up as THE definition of gatekeeper. If you could beat prime SFAT, only then could you start to consider yourself one of the best in the world. I'd love to see him make a wicked top 8 run in the future.
Important to note that Hbox also would stand up to get a better view of the DI his opponent was using when he'd get a grab. This is also prob partially why he'd wear sunglasses too for a while
I'll never forget watching this set live. I think this set was actually really important in the grand scheme of Hungrybox's career trajectory. It was one of the first times where his back was against the wall but he just refused to lose. The attitude he used to win this set was something that he only grew stronger within the following two years, and that's a big reason why he became the best in the world. Great video as always, Walt. Keep up the good work my dude
At 9:44, that actually is an energy drink, Bawls Guarana Original Flavor. It's one of my favorites, produced by the Bawls company out in Akron; it's most well-known for being a drink of choice for LAN parties back in the mid-to-late 2000s, and for being featured in some godawful product placements in little-known isometric strategy game "Fallout Tactics". The bottle shape is kind of iconic, with all the bumps all over it and the not-quite-weezerish azure of the glass. The guarana fruit from which they get the caffeine is supposed to make it uptake slower and thus give less of a rush than something like coffee or redbull, in order to keep your hands steady. In my experience it works pretty well -- I can drink one or two and go through a night sleepless without any excess jitters or twitches. There are consequences, though. Other drinks have adapted the whole guarana thing too, but I'm fairly certain Bawls was the first. Also, SFAT is a choker. I'm sorry Zac but you know it's true. Hope this helps!
I can attest to this, it somehow had a pretty wide reach around that time in North America, as a teenager I have fond memories drinking it and buying to because the bottle and name were iconic. I say it had wide reach because I could find it in Newfoundland Canada (island off the east coast of the continent)
I've been playing various games standing up, the game feels very different at a different angle, and seeing the mini jump that SFAT did is very reminiscent of what I've done a couple of times in the past.
Love Zac, he is such a sick player, and to be that good for how long he's been doing it is so impressive. Glad that he was at UC Davis for my first year of college/first year of entering locals (after playing for a few years beforehand), he has this cool energy about him, and he welcomed me to the scene. One of my favorite moments from being part of the community came from him. Zac, his coach Bobby, and I, were in a carpool to Genesis 8, and at one point we were singing Runaway by Kanye West at the top of our lungs. Such a cool guy and player, love seeing him at norcal locals from time to time.
I think the error by SFAT was not standing up earlier. You wait to do something until last stock game 5, it doesn't really matter what you do, you're gonna get clutchboxed.
I can never help but root for Hungrybox. raw unadulterated passion and ambition drips from the dude. not many of us want anything as badly as Juan wanted/wants to be the best.
I expected that this set would one day or another be a topic on your channel but more so leaning into the goofy breakdown format but i really enjoyed the more analytical timechamber you've created for this iconic moment of the game's history. Hopefully 2024 will be a very successful year for you and man you gotta get that Armada block at Tipped Off
some games especially the best competitive ones are not about play but out-play any game where when you make a mistake and the difference between win or die is the opponent then it doesn't matter that you made the mistake if it's not punished. so you don't have to play well you just have to play better than the opponent. so there is no play only out-play.
SFAT used to be the gatekeeper of the top level. There always seemed to be a gap in skill between him and the rest of the top 10 (even when he was in the 10), but SFAT was one of most consistently good fox players ever. If you couldn’t beat SFAT, you could never be at the top. He just dominated everyone outside the top 10.
I think you should have mentioned the allegations that Hbox stands up in order to see the opponents' control stick and thus which way they're DI-ing his throws.
Fly Amanita was the best Ice Climbers for a bit and he was notable for never ever Wobbling. Dude retired a while ago but when he was active he was hype as shit to watch
Outside of the psychology, I wouldn't be surprised if there was actual physical benefit to standing. It seems like it'd make our blood flow easier, preventing all the veins in our thighs from getting pinched by a chair. If your body doesn't have to work as hard to get that blood to your brain, then more focus could be available for that reaction time. Seems plausible, at least
