I love toners & essences!! I feel my routine is incomplete without one, plus there are SO many on the market with many different benefits , idk how people can say that you generally don’t need them when sometimes they have similar ingredients to serums
Same! Toners and essences are the best part of skincare routines 💖
So true! I've been using an essence as my serum for weeks now and my skin is loving it!
But the fact is- that modern toners and essences are just watered down serums. You can use them - but for me is just waste of money , also not so much eco friendly… you CAN make essence or toner from your serum- just mix few drops with water - and here you go- you have you essence. And price of serum and toner is basically the same… I don’t wanna spend my money on 200 ml of water with 20 drops of serum. I wanna spend the same money on serum and made 20 litres of essence…
@JanKowalski-pc9kt but for those suffering with dehydration it makes a huge difference. I have dry skin prone to dehydration and if I only use a serum and moisturiser my skin is itchy, dry and irritated. 2 layers of that "water" as you say is the only thing that makes a difference
@@JanKowalski-pc9kt but if you're mixing it like that, wouldn't it change the formulation? 🤔I'm not a chemist or a formulator, so I don't know if it is safe to do that..
I see so many people in skincare communities on reddit who ask for advice because they overdid it with actives - honestly I think so many issues would go away if people were gentler and respected their skin barrier.
Thank you for calling out the shaming of maximalist routines! I have many many steps in my routine but I don’t like to tell people how much because people do like to judge (while at the same time telling me how lovely my skin is 🙄. Yes, it’s like that cause I hydrate the crap out of it with my many steps). I’d say it takes me about an hour a day to do my routines but I enjoy this time, it truly is my self care!
I used to drink so much water I was hospitalized for drinking too much - trust me, it did nothing to improve my skin
I have chronic dehydrated skin and stopped using my toner and essence due to a health issue and during that time my skin got so dry and dehydrated and it looked wrinkled and large pores. Once I started my toner and essence again my skin totally changed within a few days. They are so amazing for people with skin like mine!
As someone who "water fast" during Ramadan, I can not express how much drinking water can actually do for skin, during that time my skin is just completely depleted, like there is no more collagen no nothing holding it together, it feels like I have papyrus in guise of skin for the whole duration XD
Yay! I see a lot of these misaligned advices on Reddit a lot and some of them really piss me off. Love seeing it addressed!
Reddit is great but also full of some weird advice, I agree!
Great video!!
Thank you, Kelly. I hope you are having a joyful Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for making this video, I would definitely like to watch another one like this.
Happy Thanksgiving! I love watching your videos, very informative and helped me in my skin care journey. I feel it's a never ending battle to adapt to the changes in the weather, stress and diet. My skin is always reactive to these situations.
I've never seen anyone think that applying exfoliants at night meant you didn't have to use sunscreen. I still think it's best to use actives in the evening giving your skin at least some time to recuperate before exposing it to uv rays, we all know sunscreen is not a 100% shield.
Thank you !! Yes I love essences and toners abs honestly it doesn’t take long to slap them on and do stuff and then apply cream . No drama and my dry skin loves it
Awesome sauce!!!
Great info❤
I love your "rant" about actives! It's so true, it seems like nowadays only "actives" that have the power to damage your skin barrier forever after are deemed as such. All the beneficials "actives" that help build and strenghten our skin barrier are completely overlooked when they are keys, especially if you decide to apply AHA/BHA on your skin like its marmelade on bread.
I agree! Too many people have burned their skin and are miserable because of this advice!
I developed reactive skin after using serum with vitamin C that turned brown all of a sudden and I didn't know at that time that color in a vitamin C serum could seriously irritate my skin. From that time I couldn't use any kind of vitamin C, not even in facial creams at the lowest percentage.
@@dianalaura8285 Vit C also did me dirty TT_TT !
I thought toners were useless and had no benefit for my skin until I stopped using them for a while. I now love my hydrating toners! They do a lot to prevent breakouts and protect my skin from dryness.
Yes. I would like to more outdated advised debunked. The majority of them from this video I already new, but I still learned something new. I really like your content.
Happy Thanksgiving Kelly! Thank you for all your videos.
You're so welcome, Margot! Happy Thanksgiving!❤
Very enlightening and important information! Thanks so much, and Happy Thanksgiving!!❤
Happy thanksgiving! ❤

You're so welcome!💖
Thanks Kelly! Awesome video as always!🎉❤
BTW I love your top, very cute 🤩
Thank you so much for the support, I'm really grateful!
Hey Kelly! I just wanted to say hi today 😋.
Great video, as ever.
Hi Barbara! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video! ❤
Amazing video, thank you! Everyone should watch it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have combo skin and a simple routine including Isntree Onion Toner ( PM ) & Jing Jung Sung Essence ( AM ) . They are so helpful for tolerating Tretinoin formula which also 15% Azelaic Acid . I rarely use aha toner . Thanks for quality advice and help 🙌👏❤️😊🇬🇧
So happy to hear they helped!💖
I love my toners! I have deep dehydration and find toners can make my skin feel much better. I’m not sure if you’re into J-beauty at all, Kelly, but one of my holy grails is the Kose Carter HD Moisture lotion and Kose Carter HD Balance Care lotion (the moisture one is super hydrating). They’re kinda expensive (around $30 USD without a sale), but I think they’re worth it.
Kelly ❤ you are a gem in this skincare community. I’m a new follower and have spent the past 2 weeks just binge watching all of your videos and… wow. Adore you so much!!! 💗
Yay, welcome, so happy you're enjoying my content! I have a lot here so please enjoy!
It was from watching you that I tried Korean toners and essences. They have made a huge difference in my dry, sensitive, dehydrated, aged skin. It took awhile to find the right ones for my skin, but it was absolutely worth the effort and cost. They’re nothing like Sea Breeze, Thayer’s Witch Hazel, or Clinique’s original toner, which were popular when I was young and dealing with acne. They actually hurt my skin and dried it out. What I use now calms my skin, fights dehydration, adds moisture, and treats my skin gently with plant and other gentle actives like tea, propolis, ashwagandha, phytomucin, ginseng, and galactomyces.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the support! 💖
Too many actives had me with perioral dermatitis. I wrecked my skin barrier.
I've been using an essence/toner since I was 14 (when dinosaurs roamed the earth, haha). I love it!
Essence becomes something new for me but Toner have stayed with me since I was in 20's (now I am in 40's). I need Toner as I feel more comfortable to apply a bunce of my skin care after I use Toner ...I don't like to apply skin cares on dry skin...
Mugwort, tea tree, propolis, and snail mucin may not be considered "actives", but these toners/essences have been extremely active in controlling my inflammatory acne.
Another quite old one is that if you have oily skin you should not use moisturizers OR you should only use oil free moisturizers :)
I always understood the "only use x ingredient at night" as "this ingredient isn't particularly stable under irradiation/photostable". For example, it's interesting how commonly vitamin C is recommended to be used during daytime with how photo-unstable it is - it's obviously a fantastic anti-oxidant, but there are a lot of other great anti-oxidants, while the other incredible benefits (like collagen synthesis regulation) are mostly obtained while staying away from irradiation, e.g. at night. Similar issue with retinol, it's just photo-unstable, so better apply it at night if you want to reap the benefits before it degrades, right?
I mean, as you said, in the end it comes down to what the manufacturer/company says - they did their testing, and if they say use it whenever, I would assume it was tested for stability during daytime and perhaps they managed to stabilize it in a way that retained its functionality even under exposure. But videos like these always make me wonder what other knowledge I carry with me that is outdated by now hahah
Happy thanksgiving Kelly! Thanks for the video 🦃
One of the issues I find with the skincare community is the black and white thinking and advice given. Our skin is all different what works for one person doesn't necessarily apply to others. I think it is well intentioned because those giving the advice found that info to be really helpful for themselves, but that doesn't mean it can be rigidly applied to everybody else. An example of this is advice to only wash your face once a day. I see that pushed online like it's the only way to do things, meanwhile a lot of dermatologists and aestheticians recommend washing twice a day. And for me it's super important to wash twice a day to keep away acne, even though I have sensitive and dehydrated skin. It even helps my sensitivity to wash twice a day because it gets stuff off my skin!
Thank you for the video and happy thanksgiving! I have a question for the last one about photosensitizing ingredients, I feel like it’s good but I still want to double check and make sure I’m understanding this right - could I use AHAs or retinols during the daytime so long as I am also wearing sunscreen? I am indoors for my job usually, only really outside when driving to/from work or for errands since it’s colder out, but as long as I wear sunscreen and the product doesn’t make it pill off I’m good… right? Thank you 😆
They make your skin sensitive to the sun for 7-14 days after application so if you apply AM or PM you must wear sunscreen every day as long as you continue to use it and for 7-14 days after discontinuing use. Retinol applied during the day could run into issues as not all formulas are stabilized for UV exposure. But if you are applying retinol in the AM and not commuting or exposing yourself to direct light for the first hour or so you're probably good!
Thank you for your response! 😊🫶🏻
Yup, tried to drink water. Didn’t help. Lol.
Hi! I’m curious, do you still cleanse your face once a day? Like a couple of years ago or do you no longer do this?
So I wash my face 2x every day but in the morning I might opt just to use water depending on how my skin feels,. In the summer when I'm a bit more oily I might choose a gentle cleanser. Hope that helps!
A lot of the anti-toner/essence definitely comes with a sense of virtuous superiority re: cheaper/simpler/drug-store-is-better-than-expensive-brands. It's like people think you can't have a superiority complex about simple/cheap, but you totally can.
I'd love to see another of these! i see a ton of stuff that's outdated, but also a lot that seems to be people trying to make blanket rules out of something that can't be simplified like that.
So true! There is a big vibe around skincare like we must simplify and make scientific our routines and everything else is deemed frivolous. There is no 1 right way to do skincare, 1 way doesn't work for everyone, and like never mind if someone enjoys many layers and products!
*Cerave toner enters the chat*
Hi Kelly 😂the actives and don’t use toners etc - what a lot of rubbish. I have super dry, rosacea and eczema prone skin and I am menopausal at 51. My skin is not suited to an active alone 😂and would crack and bleed without all the hydration and moisture I can layer on. Actives (exfoliants and retinoids etc) are something I have to use with care. My skin is incredibly sensitive/reactive and only tolerates small amounts of these ingredients whereas hydrating products and rich emollients are essential for me. I ignore much of this type of one size fits all advice tbh as my skin needs far different care than a young balanced skin. I drink a ton of fluids but I am still fighting dehydration in my skin from a naturally weak moisture barrier aka eczema and have my whole life. All the gentle hydration products now available are so helpful for managing my skin issues and they just weren’t available when I was young (the eighties was when I was a teenager 😂 and the skincare available then was laughable by today’s standards). I love my layers of toner, essence and serum to quench my extremely thirsty skin and a rich buttery cream to seal them in. I do use some “active” ingredients but they are not the whole of my routine by any means. I can’t use cereve as it burns/stings so all those saying this brand is what everyone needs is also a fallacy. I think any advice where one size suits all should be ignored- it’s just not realistic when you consider how different we all are. Best wishes x
As for Vitamin C, you're supposed to apply it right after cleansing, but does that mean you need to use it before your toner? I use a milky toner for hydration after cleansing (e.g. I'm from Rice toner) and only then do I apply the Vit C serum. Have I been doing it wrong?
The outdated advice is to apply after cleansing, if it feels better for you to apply after toner than do it that way. The whole pH thing is a little outdated and doesn't take into consideration that skincare is already pH-balanced, you aren't doing it wrong!

My problem is no matter what I do, how many hydrating or moisturizing products I use (and I’ve a 10 steps routine), my cheeks keep feeling dehydrated (tight deep down, even if my skin is glowy and nice apparently). The only period my skin feels good is in summer, while during fall and especially winter it’s a disaster. I use products you recommended like LRP lipikar cleanser, Make prem toner (4 layers), cosrx snail essence and others, I don’t know what to do anymore! 😭
Have you tried using a more occlusive moisturizer after layering your other skin care products? I do a couple layers of hydrating toner, one layer or essence, serum, and seal it all in with a thicker moisturizer. You can also incorporate a hydrating skin spray as a pick me up whenever your skin is starting to feel dry. Another reason could be your face wash is too drying. I switched to a ph balanced cleanser and it made a difference.
Do you use a humidifier? If you suffer in the cooler months, it's likely the inside environment is dry and increasing your dehydration and skincare can only do so much if the environment isn't favorable. Also make sure you are incorporating your barrier care products with ceramides alongside of those hydrating products. Hydration only soothes symptoms, barrier care is what gets to the root cause!
@@KellyDriscoll I don’t, I should probably get one. Hopefully it’d help me 🤞🏻
Wet skin increases penetration of water-soluble actives. People with sensitive skin should absolutely wait until the face is dry before applying vitamin C (especially pure ascorbic acid) or AHAs (especially glycolic acid) as both can be highly irritating. It's not a matter of pH. My skin isn't reactive and I'm acclimated to the acids, so I can put them on my own wet skin, but clients burn themselves constantly with glycolic and ascorbic because they are applying them wet.
Have clients use a lower percentage of glycolic or ascorbic if they prefer wet skin application
@@susanb3989 obviously. The issue is that before they see a professional they find youtube videos (like this one) that tell them to go ahead and apply whatever they have on hand to wet skin.
Something I'd like to add is double cleansing, it works for a lot of people, but not all, myself included. For months I was double cleansing and couldn't figure out why my skin barrier was damaged, I was getting breakouts etc, then I just started single cleansing and it changed everything, my skin is now good, no breakouts, no distress, nothing. I don't wear make-up and only use chemical SPF so a water based cleanser with an emulsifier in it is enough for me to wash my face thoroughly.
Oh yeah the whole double cleanse or die opinion! It was always meant for makeup removal, I think some people touted it as necessary for everyone because I think most people don't cleanse thoroughly so the double cleanse method helped them improve their skin even when not wearing makeup. But you're right, some people just can't take that much cleansing when there isn't that much to cleanse off!
Preach! I don't wear makeup and I tried double cleansing but my dry sensitive skin didn't benefit at all from it. Now I use the Kose cleansing oil, great at removing SPF and even tho it's an oil, it doesn't leave an oily residue.
@@marrykozakura9352 I used to not like double cleansing because every cleansing oil I tried made me break out into cystic acne like pimples, then I managed to get my hands on the Juno&co cleansing balm and it’s amazing. I’ve been using it as a first cleanse for years followed by the Byoma jelly cleanser and I love them. They work incredibly well together.
I have one outdated suggestion to share that I often debunk in comments on different forums - it is often claimed that you should not use AHA/BHA cleanser or exfoliant before Vit C, which is not true. You should not use it ONLY if your skin is not used to it and gets irritated - then yes, better to avoid this combo. But if your skin is fine, then using acids before ascorbic acid based Vit C serum will actually benefit, because AHA/BHA lowers ph of the skin, and as ascorbic acid pH is lower as well, below 3,5, then lowering ph level of skin beforehand will potentially help vist C better to get to work and be more efficient. As ascorbic acid is very unstable and absorbs into skin best at low ph level.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your ongoing support, it means a lot to me! 🙏
