I had to pause to leave a comment because I am so thankful for you saying that even mass produced clothes were produced by human hands! I think we all tend to forget that, and althought sometimes working conditions don’t allow all of the garnment workers to produce good quality clothing, their work still deserves respect.

Absolutely! It's something that I feel strongly about. Garment workers around the world are skilled technicians whose work is constrained by the constant push for lower prices.

I work in the industry and am often surprised how many people think clothing is made my robots or machines so it should be cheap. They generally don’t understand it is like making it at home but just a larger scale.

One of the things I like most about handknitted socks, is that they can be adjusted to any kind of feet. Whether you have high of low arches, wide or narrow feet/ankles, once you get the hang of sock knitting, you can start playing around until you find the perfect stitch count/heel/toe for you. And then you can also start making the perfect socks for your loved ones.
A family member of mine suffers from severe chronic pain in his deformed legs and feet. He mostly wears extra wide handknitted socks, because normal socks are too tight and hurt him. All his old pairs were pretty worn out, so he was happy to find out that I knit socks and I was more than happy to knit him some new ones, exactly to his wishes. It might seem like a small thing, but if you're in chronic pain, every little bit of comfort counts.

Like you Anushka there are several reasons I like sock knitting. I like that there is one item of clothing for which I’m not reliant on mass production, I like that I am making something functional and practical. That people need and don’t just put at the back of a drawer. I haven’t bough a sock in five years and I haven’t thrown one out either. I like that. As a history geek I like that it makes me feel connected to the history of the craft. Most of my knitting time used to be commuting. You can crank out a lot of socks on the 67 bus and being a sock knitter means you’re never without a knitting project if you find yourself having to wait for something. Now I crank out socks while listening to meetings on Zoom. Finally they are the only thing I can be trusted to knit at knit night while we’re chatting and having a glass of wine!

Three years ago when I got back into knitting I thought couldn't use those small needles to knit socks ,I thought could not manage it . Now I'm addicted to knitting them and my family love them and they keep bugging me to make more . Handknit socks are amazing and I hate wearing the store bought ones .

I had no interest in knitting socks until a sewing friend dared me to make a pair. I'm very impressionable when it comes to dares so I couldn't resist.: -) Turns out I loved the process! I've now made 75 pairs. For me, the vanilla, cuff-down, eye of partridge heel - fancied up with striping and colourwork - is perfect. I have used up SO much stash yarn making striped socks.

I learned to knit because I wanted to knit socks! I had moved somewhere ridiculously cold in winter, and I was sick of cold feet, because store bought socks just weren't cutting it. So I knit my first pair just over 8 years ago, and while I do knit other things, I always come back to socks, and usually have at least a couple pairs on the needles.

I've been knitting for 10 years, mostly beanies and scarves. I was convinced that I could never knit a pair of socks. It did take a lot of research to actually start. Of course, all my needles were too big, so I started out on the 2 circulars method (mainly because the needle set was cheap). Then I found a pattern that made sense to me. My brain just could not wrap around the instructions...but I finally GOT IT. I finished my first pair (after starting over about 3 times) a couple of months ago. WOW...I was so proud of them. They were a little big for me, BUT MY HUSBAND LOVES THEM. You are definitely correct in saying that people are so happy with the gift of hand-knitted socks. I have to admit that by the time I completed them, I wasn't sure if I would do another pair. BUT I'm working on the fourth pair now.....and I just ordered a 40 inch US Size 1 circular needle and some merino blend yarn for my next pair. I think I'm hooked LOL!! Thanks for your video. I enjoyed watching it.

Somewhat experienced sock knitter here! I totally agree with all of your arguments. Also I love that I can knit socks out of insanely colourful yarn that I probably wouldn't use otherwise.
They also make great gifts and you can incorporate really challenging patterns that I maybe wouldn't want to work a whole sweater in just because of the time and effort.

When it comes to my style I like a lot of neutrals and jewel tones. Very subdued, nothing crazy. Socks, though, is where I get to think about all the crazy colors and self striping patterns. Sock yarns are where I get to explore the mint greens, the speckled purples, and the highlighter yellows. It’s a different kind of excitement I get when I pick out sock yarn, it’s where I get to go crazy:D

I don’t knit socks because I don’t enjoy wrangling the dpns. I have recently seen very small circular needles, so maybe I’ll try one of those sometime. I do want to try knitting socks.
I found myself listening to your reasons and nodding along, thinking of another type of project: the handknitted dishcloth/ washcloth! These feel so nice and are a joy to use, especially when compared to commercial ones. They are affordable and portable. You can try new techniques with low stakes because it’s such a small project. Also, you can let your creativity run wild! I made a school of 6 fish for some friends years ago. Each one is made of a different colorway and has a different shape. Their kids still use them regularly, and they’ve never needed mending. Also with the creativity angle: I just finished what I call a “doodle dishcloth” where I have no set design in mind when I start and decide which stitch patterns to use as I go. Making a doodle dishcloth is so relaxing!

At Christmas I told a large group of friends that 2020 birthday gifts would all be hand knitted socks-I too, measurements and color requests. I am in the middle of knitting them and hope to have all 10 pairs ready for our next meet up party in August! It’s been great for me because 1.) I get to practice different sock patterns without ending up with more socks than I can wear. 2.) it pushes me to try new yarns, 3.) it solves the issue of what do you get all your friends for their collective birthdays that are thoughtful gifts and useful, and 4.) it forces me to work to a deadline so I don’t linger on second sock island. I used to hate knitting socks and just decided to embrace it and see what happens.

I was so skeptical about knitting socks for the longst time ('What's the point if no one sees them?')but became such a convert after I finally knit a well-fitting pair. I primarly wear my hand knit socks at home because they make me feel even more cosy than hand-knit jumpers (seriously), but I really only wear them out of the house in boots. I'd love to see what kind of shoes you tend to wear them in out of the house to give them a proper showing to the world!

Just wanted to chime in, because I only wear hand-knit socks now...I like to wear them with a Mary Jane style of shoe to show them off. Of course, it will take a little bit of trial and error to find one that will fit with the socks. What I ended up doing when I needed new shoes last fall, was order a few pairs from different brands online, so I could try them on at home with my socks to see what would work. For my feet, I need Mary Janes with a wider toe box with a rounded toe to be able to fit the socks in them, so I guessed the best I could going by pictures, and luckily one of them worked, and I was able to return the others.

For me, socks are why I ever wanted to learn (self teach) to knit. I wanted to make myself unique/bright colors/pretty patterns socks. I also spent a few years hand knitting them so that I could wear a different pair each day all Winter long - which means I may each of my pairs of socks once over the course of 3 months and so my socks life is fairly longer than if I only had a few pairs. Recently I’ve been making warm weather type (cotton blend) socks to replace all my old “fitness” socks. Knitting socks has become my favorite thing to knit. I tend to knit “vanilla” non-patterned socks in interesting yarns/colors. I have to agree with cost - you can find indie or commercial dyed sock yarns in a blend that will wear amazing well for years and years, at a good price. I also will darn those thinning well-worn areas on my socks so that I will be able to continue to wear my socks for many years to come.

I love hand knit socks. I’ll never go back to store bought. My feet deserve better😀 Even though I’d always been frustrated with mass produced socks I hadn’t realised how utterly shoddy they really were until I wore hand knit. I started knitting socks as one of my earliest knitting ventures and made them almost exclusively for a year or so and now I’ve graduated to sweater knitting. I complete projects fairly slowly so have been giving socks a rest while I attempt to stock up on my hand knit sweater needs. I am intrigued though by the idea of trying new skills on this small canvas (most of my socks til now have been vanilla). You’ve got me thinking 🤔 I will say that knitting socks really connected me to my knitting ancestry, those who made a living knitting stockings etc. to scratch a living. I have since read fairly widely on the subject which has been wonderful.
I love the socks you’ve been designing Anushka and I’m sure I will buy a few but might not get round to enjoying them for a little while.

Sock knitting is great for using up ends of yarn, stripes and colorwork make vanilla worsted socks interesting and what remains from the socks can be part of granny square blanket. As far as knitting socks with purchased yarn, never willing to spend when goal was realestate( bought house for cash right after great recession so now no house payment in the current chaos) If you are absolutely craving the expensive yarns for any project, etsy has lots of roving or raw fleece to work up and those drop spinning experiments are perfect for socks. Taking raw materials to garment by yourself is so empowering in this time of utter chaos. I have spun flax ,plied it , knitted a summer top. Washed, combed, spun, plied and knitted several things from alpaca, blending, or plying different colors is so satisfying. In 50 yrs I never have knitted just to knit, always there was a purpose, a person

One of my absolute favorite projects to knit are socks, especially toe-up varieties. It was the item I was the most proud of having learned to create because it was technically my first three dimensional object I had ever knitted and acquiring sock knitting skills also taught me how to use double pointed needles for the first time! Once I learned, I was measuring the insteps of all of my friends and family to custom knit them socks! I feel empowered in particular every time I make myself a pair of socks, as it is a foot battle I can win every time since I have issues finding (cute, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable) shoes that fit me correctly.

Sock knitting allows me to afford the beautiful indie dyed yarns. I only need one 100g skein at $33 instead of having to dish out hundreds of dollars. Try a different direction when you're thinking about knitting a sock. It helps. Knit them sideways, or even twisted (wrapture socks) or on 2 needles instead of circulars.

Currently knitting my first pair of socks. Oh my goodness, it is a lot harder for me than a bigger sweater or blanket project. The second sock is coming along much easier and quicker than the first. Even though it is hard (for me) I look forward to knitting many more. Already have yarn picked out for the grand daughter.

The Crimson Stitchery I found your podcast last week! After watching so many, I just love them! I bought a second hand coat and will now always look for used items instead of new! And I’ve started my first pair of socks! I have knitted for years but always thought negatively towards knotting socks! So thank you so much xxxx

I have had no success knitting socks, but I will keep on trying. Thanks for the pep talk. I look forward to the videos. I like dpn’s. I don’t understand magic loop and 9” circulars are too small for my chubby fingers. Thank you

I’m coming back to knitting after years of exploring other hobbies. It’s easily been 10 years since I’ve knit anything (and back then, it was scarves and dishcloths). I’ve always wanted to knit a pair of socks, and this past month that’s what I’ve been doing! Sort of. :p Purling was a new stitch for me, so I’ve been practicing that, as well as knitting in the round for the first time. Trying to manage 4 needles and a 5th in my hand has been an exercise in patience and perseverance, for sure! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve restarted knitting the cuff (never got past 2cm in length). I’ve started with 4 needles and magically dropped down to 3 with no idea how I got there (I understand now!), there are holes in my ribbing, dropped stitches left and right, and definitely not the same number of stitches on the needles that I started with...
But I’m getting there. Over time I’m slowly making less mistakes as my fingers get used to working together. Socks seem to be my version of the Knitting Olympics :p

Little late to the party. I really love knitting socks since they are 1. fast to knit. 2. I use them. 3. I can buy that one fancy hand-dyed yarn and use it. I've been slowly replacing my ready-made socks with handknit ones. I don't really stray from vanilla socks but that's ok since I like to show off the yarn colorway. :)

Tip for those who dont like kitchener stitch to finish off. When finishing toe area . (I use dpns). Knit first 2 stitches decrease. Reapeat for the 4 needles. 2nd round knit normal row. Then a decrease row. Repeat until u have 6 stitches per needle. Keep decreasing until there are 3 per needle left . Then thread ur needle and thread through all 12 stitches. Take needles out. Pull thread through 2nd time. Pull tight . Turn inside out . Sew up. I have knitted 600+ socks ans no complaints about uncomfy toe area. Due to 1 row decrease 1 row knit u give the toe area more room.

Wool socks are sooooo much more comfortable imo. Merino is wonderful at dealing with moisture so no more sweaty feet. They also are easier on my feet when I wear my docs (does that sound too old fashioned). Plus they are a wonderful TV knit most of the time I need something easy that is comforting to knit when I get frustrated with elaborate lace shawls and inticate sweaters

One of the things I've noticed most about my making during the coronavirus is that I've almost completely stopped knitting socks! Turns out that they were pretty much exclusively an "on-the-go" project because of how portable they are, and because I haven't travelled at all recently I havent made any!

Knitting at a brisk pace with striped sock yarn is oddly mesmerizing. And I agree, socks are gentle on the wallet. I buy cheap yarn and knit socks to just wear around the house like slippers :)
Also, your sweater is gorgeous! Did you make it?
Edit: nevermind! Found the video where you go into depth about making it.

I learned sock knitting last January after a few failed attempts in previous years. At first, the socks I knitted were too loose for my small feet and calves. I got advice from FB’s knitting groups, and found out that my cast-on should be a 48-stitches with a US 0.
Sock knitting saved my sanity during the pandemic, lock down, long quarantine, and awful stuff happening in NYC. It helps me to de-stress because of the concentration involved. When I don’t know what to knit next, it is my go to project. Also, it is my WIP project when I have to time-out a more difficult project.
I mostly knit vanilla sock because I mess up on pattern sock. I knitted one pair of Hermione’s sock which fits more better but requires too much concentration. In the future, I will try small colorwork and simple texture patterns. Thanks for sharing! ❤️❤️

I love sock knitting! However I hate it when people say knitting socks is expensive when it really isn't. Most of the time knitting with wool is unfairly compared to regular clothing which are made from cheaper materials.
You can knit a pair of 75%wool25%nylon socks for £5 with regular priced yarn or even £2 when it goes on sale. There isn't a shop around which will sell you socks composed of 75% wool for that price!

    I'm on the fence.
    1. I don't like counting rows, and it's difficult to produce to identical piece without keeping track and following a pattern faithfully
    2. knitting on the round is okay when the project is fairly large - socks are mostly knitted with double pointed needles and they stab at my hands :P
    3. people rarely look at other people feet, which are mostly covered anyhow with shoes and pants, so it's not a garment you'd be able to show off - as opposed to a hat, scarf, sweater, which are displayed wherever you go
    4. I don't like washing clothes by hand. that's why the washing machine was invented. socks get dirty.

If knitting your own socks makes the sock last for about 10 years. I think I am defiantly going to learn how to knit socks. Every so many years I buy packages of socks but it seems like the heal for the bigger winter socks only last for about 2 years. They wear out to fast. It is so annoying. I really like my clothes to last longer then some of them do.

    1. You have a beautiful way of looking at the world.
    2. Tip: don’t try knitting a slip stitch German short row heel. I’m on my 5th attempt at these socks and finally gave up with trying out this heel bécasse it ends up too small.

Just one thing. Socks are not as invisible as you stated whether you wear a dress or live in a country where people take their shoes off when they enter the house. Hence there are so many fashion / fun socks for sale. I prefer how my parents would offer thick woollen socks to visitors, that could be easily washed, to slippers - much more comfortable and cosy - and healthy - than wearing shoes all day, and also more hygienic and gentle for your furniture if you want to put your feet on the sofa. (Maybe not something you want to do on a formal visit.)

I only make ankle socks with 1 inch cuff. This way I have made 2 pairs out of them. It differs on who I make the socks for. Eg I make a pair for my mom and myself. If I make a pair for my sis or bil I can make another pair for my friends who has a smaller feet. I am never short on a gift.

Would love to learn but am stymied by a. overlong circular cables (would have to order shorter ones from overseas - not a financial option), and b. simply not managing dpns. Doubly frustrating, as I now have a tiny stash of sock yarn oddments that a kind acquaintance gave me. Have tried following videos, but am guessing that learning face-to-face with someone (rather than long-distance) is what I need. With the current rise in COVID-19 cases here, am going to have to wait.

Hi!!! :) I am a very new knitter. I only know how to cast on and begin to knit. I dont know how to purl or anything. I am searching for a tutorial to help me to learn. I also do not know how to read a pattern. :( I am eager to learn have always wanted to learn. I've taught myself (with the help of Crystal @ Bag O Day) to learn to crochet. As well as a couple others I've watched so I could learn. She has been a huge no, the largest reason I can crochet what I have learned. I've always wanted to knit as well. So I could knit my grandbabies socks that they can wear inside of their shoes. That would not only keep their feet warm and dry but also something for them to one day be proud of.
Can you use any yarn for sock making or would it be okay to use like.... ummmm.... say a 3 weight in lionbrand comfy cotton blend?
I also have wooden and metal knitting needles and also purchase myself the needles with the line attaching them together. (Not a clue how to use them) :(

Sorry, I don’t get sock kntting. Although I am a lifelong knitter and have many sweaters, shawls, blankets, baby stuff and other items to my credit, I have never knitted a pair of socks and have no intention of ever doing so. I just don’t get why socks are so popular, perhaps because brightly coloured socks are totally alien to my personal style and aesthetic. I prefer a tailored, conservative, classic look in neutral colours although I do like lacey Victorian patterns for a touch of vintage.
