- The Volkswagen Golf mk7 GTI represented a massive success for the brand in South Africa. In fact, South Africa is one of the largest markets outside of Germany for the Golf GTI.
With limited availability of the Golf Mk8 GTI and 8 R in South Africa, the Golf 7 GTI has become increasingly sought after, especially the facelift Golf 7.5 GTI.
In this video, we look at the VW Golf 7 GTI's common problems, and what to look out for on a test drive, from the turbocharger issues, to rear suspension knock, to what it will cost you to replace common service items, with both OEM parts pricing and aftermarket parts pricing from Midas and Goldwagen.
We'll also look at the range of Golf 7 GTIs sold in South Africa, including the Performance Pack, 7.5 GTI, 7.5 GTI ClubSport and 7.5 GTI Clubsport S.
And finally, we'll take a detailed look at the price of used Volkswagen Golf 7 GTIs for sale in South Africa, and give you advice on what would be our choice.

I own a golf mk7 gti dsg 2017 model when I purchased it, it had 58 000km on the clock however It had a waterpump replacement done on warranty Im owning it since 2018 today it has 138 000km on the clock and using it as my daily and not costing my a single penny besides services and brake repairs, I have no modifications done to my vehicle other than k&n air filter Im forever grateful owning it till many more years to come 🎉🎉
This video was much needed as I’m aiming to buy a Golf 7 GTi in 2024 as a first car 🙏🏽.
Got my 2015 Mk7 DSG GTI back in late 2020 on 109000km for R310K. Sitting on 165000km now. Had the major service done at 120000km and followed all services since. Have had to change the water pump, pre cat O2 sensor, new xenon bulbs. Changed all the brake pads myself to save money. Overall the car has been a dream and a ton of fun. No regrets. I can say that as long as the service intervals have been followed, your GTI should have a long healthy life.
Great to hear, thanks for sharing. Wishing you many happy miles!
@Carscoza thanks! Really enjoyed the video by the way.
Have a G7 2015 in manual. What a great daily. There were many occasions I got under 7l/100km. I once even fitted a wingback chair I bought at the back. Taking gaps is easy. My newborn came home in that car. This thing does EVERYTHING and does it with style👌🏽. If you can, buy one. Just get lowish kilos in your price range
I agree the best golf ever made was the 7 and 7.5.
That was the last handover that was well received in terms of seeing the latest model in the line-up compared to the 8th generation it's like they were working under pressure towards launch.
It's like running in a relay where that batton was dropped and quickly picked up.
But we still love its lashes.
Thanks for these buyer’s guide vids. Love ‘em
Brilliant guide!
Keep up the good work.
Good useable detailed information Ciro.
Love this series uploads.
Looking forward to more cars.
Love this series! Make 1 for all the most commonly bought cars, thankx!
I owned a few GTIs between Polos and Golf's but the one that stands out for me was the clubsport it was the best, very reliable, I could trash it around and it really made me happy, never had any issues truly a great build by VW PS Try n look for the special editions they offer a bit more and also keep their value, if its well looked after.....
I have to say great job guys these videos are very helpful. Keep up the great work
This an awesome video, really hope this feature continues
This was great! Please make this a series for other cars as well.
I completely agree the 7th gen was the best GTI VW made, it was so good that they made 6 versions of the Same car and still managed to sell large units of each version. I have the 2014 model for 7 years now it’s so good that I could not see myself driving another car.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Wishing you many more happy miles in your GTI :)
I've always had a soft spot for the Golf GTI MK7 they honestly nailed the design only if it was rear wheel drive I would not hesitate and buy one.
Great video
Love this
Very insightful video, thank you. I had a 2017 GTI 7 and the best car I ever owned, but sadly had to let it go due to the deteriorating roads where I live. One point you mentioned must not be underestimated... these cars are driven hard. Your really have to do all your homework with a magnifying glass when picking up a hot hatch second hand. I looked at almost 12 before getting the one I had in the end, even that one wasn't perfect but at least the best of the bunch both mechanically and cosmetically.
I am Drooling on a Golf 7💕
I completely agree, I think 7 and 7.5 were peak GTI, the 8 is just not as nice looking, attainable and according to a friend who owns one the interior switch gear is nothing short of a nightmare to operate.
7.5 GTI is the most attractive GTI out there
You are completely correct in saying the 7th generation golf GTI ( especially the 7.5) was peak golf GTI . Volkswagen can never and most probably will never replicate the magic they created with those beauties
That ClubSport S is insane!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love the level of detail ❤
Please please please do a video on the BMW 3 series???
I can't wait to pour this knowledge to my friends 😊
Do it :)
DSG gearbox. The mechanics bread and butter 😊
Always owned golf s but never Gtis I think its time great chat about the Gti
Great video, please do an update video and cover the gearbox and engine components that fail. pretty please.
Hi Ciro, great guide on the Golf 7 Gti . How about running a comparative test of all Golf 7's and sprint tests that will highlight the performance across all generations..
for me the ClubSport is still the best all-rounder and the best GTI ever,
agree! mk7 is perfection!
I own a golf 5 gti upgraded it with a lot of goodies pushing past 200kw now. I simply love my golf mk5 and will never sell it. Having said that, I also feel that the mk7 gti is where the gti peaked and would love one. I also think VW will make a big mistake if they discontinue the GTI badge. I really hope they don't. Love your shows, bra keep it up!
Hi Chiro, thanks for the content! Can I also ask you to do French vehicles, e.g Peugeot
These get better and better. Love the cost of ownership part as well.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching :)
Great video.. please do the Mercedes Benz A45 AMG next bru.
This was awesome please add this feature and do more,Ford Focus ST and E90 335i/M3
Yes, I've got a towbar on my GTI. Yes, I drive it hard. Yes, I have replaced the water pump. And it's due for another water pump.
I have a MK7 Manual GTI Clubsport in Dubai. I’m South African and know they don’t have the manual option back home. Even here it’s rare with only 5 cars in this region.
My clutch went out at 120k kms but it’s decently strong. If you mod the car then you’ll need to upgrade the clutch to maybe a Sachs performance clutch. Decent options. This is by far the most fun GTI i’ve owned and prefer it to my previous DSG
Manual box is the fun option.
God only knows how much I really need this car 🙏
My maintenance plan for my 7.5 gti covered the replacement of the car battery, water pump, thermostat housing , brakes, wipers and other cosmetic items during my 5 years ownership. I have a towbar for road trips 😂, 235 /35/19 pilot sport 4s, coilovers 👌🏽 upgraded the 8 inch head unit, race chip +200kw and +400nm, and many more to come.
Race chip is a tuning box correct?
@@Bahle_Gajiyip. I’m very happy with it for now… maybe later I will upgrade to stage 3 .
Which maintenance plan are you on. I’m shopping around😅
@@njmogale1920 I originally took a 5 years vw maintenance plan when I purchased my car and extended it. There are some good ones out there. But I’m no expert.
Don't like that you brushed over that the water pump assembly is 2 parts and both are prone to leaks. The silver part(the pump) being R2.7k and the black part (thermostat) being R9k.😭😭🤕🤕🤕
Please do a video for Ford fiesta ST.
nice segment - keep them coming. Reminds me of the youtube channel @redriven (AUS) who have also done a GTI buyers guide
Please do a buyers guide on a ford focus st and rs
Please do a similar video of the polo 6r gti and polo 6c gti
Very informative video
But should you buy any performance car research on any and all parts that are bound to fail to avoid headaches later on
Could you guys make a buyer's guide on the ford focus st?
Awsume comment with a great touch of humor. Well done.
I do have a solution to the VW brand and in this case the Gti.
It’s called - N.
😁
Everymans dream car. But still want golf 6 35 edition
I own a MK7 GTI, I have replaced the Water Pump, Front Suspension, and I and not gonna get rid of it, it's the best.
I have original MK7 R 19" Mags, riding on 235/35/19"
Is it possible that you do the same review on F10 and F30 N20 engines
Hi Ciro, i want to buy a second-hand BMW X1 2016. Which one is good and petrol / diesel efficiency and reliability? Your advice will be so much appreciated, thanks for your youtube tunnel and tips.
please do corolla next
For me the 7.5 GTi is peak gti when it comes to looks, tech and ergonomics, everything is where you want it its accessible and feels premium.
The mk7 is nice but the lights and tech inside make them look dated.
The 8 gti feels like a downgrade when you sit inside it and is far too plasticky for the price they go for new. While they do look futuristic and will smash the 7/7.5 in the twistys i can't help but think the 7.5 looks, works and sounds better. But im biased because i have a 7.5.
One comment i can make is that dcc is a must, mine doesn't have it and i feel like my fillings get rattled out everytime i get in the car.
But i must disagree with the comments on the tow bar, i think its a pretty cool feature because it does hide behind the bumper when not using it and a gti towing a trailer is always cool.
I have driven neither but the 8 looks so plasticy
@@thatoditsele9192 go look at one if your local VW gets on in stock. For a near million rand car i would expect better materials than those that are used
@@thatoditsele9192all manufactures are going environmentally friendly
What do you want to do with all these features in terms of performance etc on the public road.
For me a manual golf 6 35 edition would be the best keeper
I remember seeing some Clubsport units going for over R1m 😅
Would love a land rover version and hyundai tuscon the g4gc one
I think all the edition Golf GTi are still amazing cars from 30, 35, 40
Thanks for this Cirro. Was about to buy one, then I saw this video and opted for a 2002 Toyota Corolla.
I think the tow bar option on the GTI is common for bike racks or Thule boot boxes.
Please do a review of Kia Seltos 2023
Amazing Video.. Keep it up.. Now to the serious question. TCR or Clubsport?
Tcr no doubt
@@WaseemKhan-iu4bh but there's no bucket seats nor proper rear wing on the TCR.. That's my issue
The carbon build up on intake valves plagues many manufacturers, Direct Injection drawbacks, cost involved to remedy?
As for the turbocharger, at those prices, I would rather replace with a reputable Garrett replacement like a GT2260 especially if I intend keeping the car.
It's not for pulling items but as a defense mechan8sm when someone rears your end
😢😢😢 i hope i get a golf R 2027+ instead of a GTI only problem is prices keep increasing every year second option clubsport 😢 and thank you for the breakdown with prices
Is it advisable to get a Golf 6 in 2023? Atleast the 2012 ed 35
Is it advisable to get a scirocco r in this day and age?
Towbar = transport mountain bike to destination fast without having to clip things onto body that could damage paint \ window.
Believe it not , my vehicle automation plan covered evryrhing under warranty - this was 2months ago at VW themselves....and its gets sweeter....my model is a 2014 with 119000kms on the clock ....absolutely love this car....❤
thats a w my man
I’m tellin u….
@@deonhrupnarain you bought an extended warranty?
@@Bahle_Gaji it had an existing extended warranty (VAP)when I purchased the vehicle earlier this year ….before it expired , I made sure VW did everything from mechanical to even light bulbs ….lol
Fitted tow bar for my Mountain bike that cost allmost the same as my Golf 7 GTi. 😂
Only 15000 units? Were all 15 000 sold in Cape Town? On every corner was a Golf GTi.
VW now offers you the ability to extend your maintenance plan up to 10 years making the 2nd hand purchase still a good option.
Tow bar for transporting bicycles.
I did 125 000 kms in 5 years. The Best car a petrol head with reason, can ever wish for as a daily. Had a 2015, only let it go once I changed the water pump at 150 000kms and couldn’t trust its reliability for high mileage daily driving. If they sold new ones I’d be first in line to go through experience all over again. 😊😊😊
Thank you for sharing your experience! Are you not interested in a Golf 8 GTI?
Please do previous gen ranger
Good idea! We're working on it
Please do Ford Ranger next
Good idea!
Number 5 GTI White or Red.
Best GTI ever.
Can you do a buyers review on 3series bmw
Yes coming up in 2024 :)
What about this 2016-2019 BMW 125i M Sport (LCI) as a rival to the VW Golf 7 GTi? biggest compromise about the BMW is space. I am in the market and these are 2 cars I am looking at.
Had the f20 125i Msport , it was a good drivers car BUT i did have to have an engine replacement done through motorplan though ~R250k for a drivetrain replacement , but there is risk with any vehicle , bought a 335i afterwards and that was rock solid for a good few years
Nice 👌🏾
Could you do a buyer's guide for the original M2.
Thank you
Don't remove the limiter guys you will get arrested 😂
The number one reason why the 7th gen GTI sold so well: Instant Street Credibility 😂
But honestly, besides some of the older, legendary South African market hot hatches (like the Opel Kadett Superboss) and other German brand hot hatches like the BMW M135i and Audi RS3, what car in South Africa has the street cred of the Golf 7 GTI?
If u buy a used hot hatch, you will buy someone else's problems, oil pumps dsg boxes and bearing knocks are common, good luck finding one with out an ecu tune.
Shout out to Mpho😂🔥
I’m thinking of buying one with a budget of about 300k-350k! Just not 100% sure
DSG Gearbox 👎 📛📛📛😡😡😡😡
Mechatronic Unit 😂
lannie motors tzaneen charged me 12k for water pump that icluding housing and thermo
Undoubtedly, it's one of the best all-round hatches ever made, but don't just take my word for it. Go and test drive a well-maintained MK7+ GTI/R, and thereafter, the MK8 GTI. You'll save some cash while still maintaining the prestige.
Wait did the golf 7 R also come with a manual gearbox???
Very early in its life cycle yes
The VW Golf 7 was just beautiful... And VW made sure the dish out variant models of it to milk the cow dry... I highly doubt the Golf 8 will achieve such a milestone
Did the 7.5 come out with the same performance as the 7 Performance Pack?
Another option is the 128Ti BMW.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about that dreaded DSG gearbox and the cost of replacing it.
The problem with this brand is the dsg issue and overpriced
Dsg! I'd rather die. That mcu is the most unreliable gearbox I've ever seen
Tow-bar on a GTI?, Why?
The gearbox is a weakness, more so the megatronics
Tow bar was fitted for down force😂
Nothing popped up
dsg,dsg dsg very very bad buy one with a clucth pedal
@greyling8478 good on you mate ,some of us we're not so blessed with dsg but ya oil change and service is as important on transmission just like engine oil change
Lol ridiculous comment. I've got a 2015 Mk7 GTI on 165000k and it's been flawless. People who don't take care of their cars make comments like this.
@@joshua4859 ridiculous is just your opinion as it is it that form,I serviced my gearbox when it was due , its a manufacturing issue with these boxes, your we fortunate ,to be the few that didn't experience issues , if not they still coming wait and see at some point it's going to go ,just like a manual box at some point ,you will have to change a clutch plate
Yeah, useless comments complaining about dsg. I have a 2010 golf 1.4 tsi with a dsg. Pretty reliable. I only need to change the clutch now after 130,000 km.
@@juliuskona3299 good for you ,your experience is not what some of us experienced, with service and all , machines are men built and they do fail ,at some point so try and be humble in your opinion 🙏 it served you long , good for you ,I had a lemon so let me stress my opinion across
