George Carlin was, and we forever be, an absolute legend. Sure, he had a couple of rough spots and times over his approximately FIVE DECADES of comedic artistry. However, he always managed to keep on evolving and telling his truth, telling much truth, and he took comedy to a realm that nobody else ever did. I first discovered his work when I was in high school, in the mid 90s, and it was some of the absolute most intelligent and hilarious material that I have ever experienced. He came to my city once and I will always cherish the fact that I was able to see him perform live. I cannot express how much I wish that he would have lived to continue to offer his insight through the past 10-15 years or so. I really feel that he should have been presented with some sort of pristine award for his work; work that kept us all informed and entertained for decades. His work did get darker as the years passed, but that simply coincided with the continuing decay of our society and his continuing and expanding willingness to address things accordingly. I will forever be thankful for his creative insight, opinions, and his courage to stand up and say what he felt was necessary to address. Eternal respect for the master, G.C.

George Carlin’s last years and last two HBO specials before he passed away were probably his best because he spoke the hard truth. They’re even more true today than ever. In fact, a lot of the things he said went way over his audience’s heads if you listen to their reaction, which sometimes was silence. Everything from bad parenting, children’s feelings being over protected which is creating a new adult population who grow up never knowing or understanding the truth about themselves, corruption in our government, finance, and politics, our American slogans and traditions that don’t have any real meaning. God Bless George Carlin for speaking the truth. I only wish He could be resurrected to hear what he would say in 2019. It would be a 10 hour special.

This is true, he didn't believe in God, cause he was really good at burying those thoughts within himself, everyone can do it, but that doesn't mean it should be done. George was given an amazing platform to speak the truth, but unfortunately the only truth he understood, is what his eyes could see, but I can guarantee you right now, that if he could be brought back from the dead, he would not have the same opinion about God anymore, and that is what happens when you you leave this temporary place of life and move on to the next, and are now living an eternal life away from a loving God as George is doing now, it's heartbreaking really, cause nobody is forced to go to hell, they choose to go there, i just don't understand, and I never will why anyone would make that decision a reality, it's not necessary, yet people do it every single day, it's a shame, but it is what it is.

My ex-husband and I waited outside our tiny local theatre in our little college town to meet George Carlin back in the early 2000s. Instead of being driven by someone or having an entourage, he pulled up in a Toyota and walked towards us, humming merrily. We had one of his albums and asked if he could sign it. He did it with pleasure and then I said, "Have a good show!" and he thanked me. Totally down-to-earth human being. RIP.
George was a political satirist and had a clear objective perception of how vulture capitalism has corrupted the human spirit. He made it his business to hold up the mirror so we could see ourselves as we have become under this massive corporate consumer culture that is hell-bent on destroying life itself. He understood the system from top to bottom and had the genius and courage to not pull any punches. It is his voice we need now more than ever. George is a true hero, a saint.

He was joking, that's what comedians do for God's sake. The fact that there may have been truth (as he saw it) to his observations doesn't mean it wasn't still a comedy routine. I mean, if his title was stand-up comic, then that's what he was. I doubt most of his audience didn't understand that he was referring to actual real life concepts in his act and thought he was just making things up that didn't exist.
George Carlin is one of the most brilliant and timeless comedians in the history of the country. It was almost as if he could see the future. I’m sure that he had bad shows but most comedians are sad or depressed and tortured souls with humor being a way for them to cope.

Carlin then went on to do 2 more HBO specials. So thats misinformation number 1 Next is the rehab, He signed himself up to rehab for alcohol and Vicodin. That was in 2004, Carlin did 2 more specials after that. Misinformation 2 Not to mention the set that he talked about was simply just people heckling him, and him telling them "Thank you very much, whatever that was. I hope it was positive; if not, well, blow me.". The hotel MGM Grand kicked him out right after that. The thing about Carlin was that he chose every single word carefully. He was a writer with the ability to perform comedically better than anyone. Not everything was perfect, but the reason he read so much on tour was that he was working his shit out for the next special, same as anyone. And he wrote a LOT. And he had to see what worked, just like any comic. But he was working out the language as much as anything. He was a virtuoso of the written word, and he memorized his entire special word for word, not just the general idea of a joke. A lot of people, I feel, didn’t understand that, so reading from a notebook didn’t make sense to them. George changed my life by opening my mind and I will always appreciate the way he honed his craft.

You have to remember, his televised comedy shows were done after he'd done the routines over and over again. He wasn't having off nights, he was writing and working on new material. Anyone who's creative and writing new stuff will write and rewrite based on the reactions of crowds and their own ideas. Nobody has ever just written a one shot comedy sketch and went out and performed it and that's that. A new idea progresses and evolves into what makes it comedy gold.

If I had to pick one that was funny on stage AND made some really good flicks it’d be Steve Martin, I’m sure there’s some I’m not thinking of. Oh, and Richard Pryor’s movies sucked. Gene Wilder and he were great together though.

We saw Carlin the last time he came to Birmingham to the Alabama Theater before he died, and we watched him literally run people out of his show because some of them came just because they had season tickets & had no idea who he was or what he did. It was fucking hilarious. He was working on new material, and it was an absolute honor to get to see him live like that working from his yellow legal pad.

A few observations. Full disclosure, George Carlin has been the biggest hero in my life for well over 15 years, so there's likely some bias here. 1. Despite Joe mentioning George as one of the greatest comedians of all-time, Rogan has never given George Carlin the rightful credit he deserves as a Mount Rushmore figure in the world of comedy. I've watched hundreds of his Rogan's podcasts and he somehow manages to discredit George's incredible contributions to the world of comedy. The sole reason Joe is producing a comedy special on a 1-2 year basis is based on the groundwork laid down from George. 2. Anthony Jeselnik is completely inaccurate with many of his facts. Carlin's Vegas residency took place in 2004 and he remained active for another 4 years, with two additional HBO specials. Both were very well done. 3. Speaking specifically on It's Bad For Ya in 2008, it certainly wasn't George's greatest hour of stand up, but it was FAR from horrendous. The notion that he simply "read" his act off a teleprompter is absurd. 4. Yes, there were lines that George would recycle from time to time such as his opener on Abortion, but by and large, Carlin would completely throw out his entire act and start with completely fresh material. I found this hypocritical as Joe even noted that on previous episodes of his podcast. This is one of the few times I must give Joe a thumbs down.
I think there's also a bias there. George Carlin is my number one standup and I never got to see him live. I'm 39 years old, been a fan since 90-91; never saw him live. I've known people who have, multiple times, and they'll tell you that while he's fantastic, he does have some off nights where he just gets kinda lazy or reads off of a piece of paper or has huge rants. That said, yea, his last couple of specials were very dark and very good. Every artist as prolific as George will have off nights or even be off for stretches of time. But he's absolutely the best there ever was, and I think by far the most fearless (or brave depending on your view).

George was incredible due to the fact that his mind was blown wide open and the line between right and wrong was permanently blurred. And he was delivering these unbiased, uncolored realizations to an audience that was deeply entrenched in the right/wrong philosophy. So, his rants greatly liberated an audience from their social conditioning and really made people think for themselves again. Once in a while, he came off, a little too raw or did not fully work out the material but a bad night could happen to anyone. He worked hard at his craft. In his younger years, he was cute and funny. But as years went on, he did get a bit grumpy. But, he is by far my favorite and I honor and respect his great, great, great contribution to the advancement of human consciousness. He was a true thinker. To hear him tell his life story is so much fun.
i'm a lyricist so i particularly admire his perception on language. his wordplay and punchlines were clever and his delivery was immaculate, he actually would have been a great battle rapper lol but you can tell he had a reverence for writing and was hyper focused on language which is where a lot of his bits originated from. Definitely an irreplaceable and witty comic - WAY ahead of his time and tried to wake people up to the elitist conspiracy he could plainly see and wanted to expose...and he did it in a unique and funny way. Occasionally missed the mark - but when you're in entertainment for decades - you will have some "off" moments. I really liked a lot of his stuff and he was a great story teller.

It’s all subjective man. From what I’ve seen, Carlin was just a really pessimistic guy and there wasn’t much that was funny about that. Louis CK and Burr have both called Carlin the greatest, and I respect his talent but I never found him funny. Joe and Anthony are both funnier than me and I can still be like “yeah Carlin would complain too much about menial crap” and it’s still a valid opinion regardless of me not being a comedian.

Catlin on Campus was one of the first ones I remember sitting and watching. His books are great, too. I have Brain Droppings and Napalm and Silly Putty. Great stuff. There really will never be anyone like him again.

Did he stumble a couple times on the final special? Yes. But he was writing at a level that most veteran comics can’t even dream to achieve. And no, he didn’t have the video destroyed from a special. I saw one of his last warm ups before filming the special that year, Trenton War Memorial Theater. He told us that he had to change up his act because of 9-11. He had pages of notes he was going off of, in between classics.
Old guy here, I saw Carlin in Las Vegas in 1981 when he just released "A place for my stuff". Brilliant ! Just jokes about human nature. And weirdly back then the opening act was dancing Vegas Showgirls with the giant feather costumes...
George was the greatest! Probably my most admired person for me. My father was a Milwaukee Police Officer & got walk him out of the Milwaukee County Jail in 72’. I think thats his favorite memory of his 30 year career.
forman208 Terry Bradshaw is in my eyes the equivalent to George. I view him as the greatest of all time. He probably wouldn’t do “great” in the modern form of football but when he played, football was a lot less about super human speed and strength and more about the fundamentals and actual mind of the game. Just like George. George’s material wasn’t always fall out of your chair funny but was deep and thought provoking. It was an intellectual analysis of the world around him through his eyes. Just like Terry Bradshaw he is the best in my eyes but would not be able to exist in today’s comedy scene. He would speak too much truth and not conform to the soft language that he despised that currently has the world by the throat. Peyton Manning has a better “arm” than Bradshaw. Tom Segura has jokes that are “funnier” than George’s. But that’s not necessarily what defines you as the greatest. That’s not putting down Tom or Peyton, just that the best “arm” or “funniest joke” aren’t all that matters sometimes

I was working in the Casbah Lounge at the Sahara Hotel around 1977-78 and Jack Eglash, the entertainment guy, had Carlin in the Copa Room, the hotel’s main room. Eglash actually took a big chance booking Carlin because this was when he (Carlin) had shed the tuxedo and was doing mostly college gigs. I actually met Carlin about a year or so after that at a Holiday Inn I was working at and Carlin was staying in, in Buena Park. I think his wife was in a show at the Cerritos Theater at the time. We talked about that gig and how Eglash broke ground with that booking. Eglash also had Anita O’Day in the lounge too. That was a crazy booking…..a semi-burnt out female jazz singer….who would sing sometimes with her back to the audience. I thought that both bookings were great. David Frye and Jackie Vernon were also in the lounge, although not at the same time.
What ¡s amazing about Carlin is that he got better and better with age. His last 4 specials were mind blowing. When they reference him on TV they always mention his "7 dirty words" routine, which is not even one-tenth as good as his later stuff. By comparison practically all musicians get stale with age and their latter work pales in comparison with their earlier work. Pure genius this guy.

George Carlin was, and we forever be, an absolute legend. Sure, he had a couple of rough spots and times over his approximately FIVE DECADES of comedic artistry. However, he always managed to keep on evolving and telling his truth, telling much truth, and he took comedy to a realm that nobody else ever did. I first discovered his work when I was in high school, in the mid 90s, and it was some of the absolute most intelligent and hilarious material that I have ever experienced. He came to my city once and I will always cherish the fact that I was able to see him perform live. I cannot express how much I wish that he would have lived to continue to offer his insight through the past 10-15 years or so. I really feel that he should have been presented with some sort of pristine award for his work; work that kept us all informed and entertained for decades. His work did get darker as the years passed, but that simply coincided with the continuing decay of our society and his continuing and expanding willingness to address things accordingly. I will forever be thankful for his creative insight, opinions, and his courage to stand up and say what he felt was necessary to address. Eternal respect for the master, G.C.

George Carlin’s last years and last two HBO specials before he passed away were probably his best because he spoke the hard truth. They’re even more true today than ever. In fact, a lot of the things he said went way over his audience’s heads if you listen to their reaction, which sometimes was silence. Everything from bad parenting, children’s feelings being over protected which is creating a new adult population who grow up never knowing or understanding the truth about themselves, corruption in our government, finance, and politics, our American slogans and traditions that don’t have any real meaning. God Bless George Carlin for speaking the truth. I only wish He could be resurrected to hear what he would say in 2019. It would be a 10 hour special.

My ex-husband and I waited outside our tiny local theatre in our little college town to meet George Carlin back in the early 2000s. Instead of being driven by someone or having an entourage, he pulled up in a Toyota and walked towards us, humming merrily. We had one of his albums and asked if he could sign it. He did it with pleasure and then I said, "Have a good show!" and he thanked me. Totally down-to-earth human being. RIP.
George was a political satirist and had a clear objective perception of how vulture capitalism has corrupted the human spirit. He made it his business to hold up the mirror so we could see ourselves as we have become under this massive corporate consumer culture that is hell-bent on destroying life itself. He understood the system from top to bottom and had the genius and courage to not pull any punches. It is his voice we need now more than ever. George is a true hero, a saint.

He was joking, that's what comedians do for God's sake. The fact that there may have been truth (as he saw it) to his observations doesn't mean it wasn't still a comedy routine. The whole IRS thing, that was during the 80s and 90s, which most people consider to be the beginning of Carlin's creative peak, as Carlin describes it: "It made me a way better comedian. Because I had to stay out on the road and I couldn't pursue that movie career, which would have gone nowhere, and I became a really good comic and a really good writer".
Lastly George Carlins last special got awarded a GRAMMY, his second to last was also nominated, and the one before that (which was the the one based on the 9/11 one, as Jeselnik described as "its not great" ) also won another Grammy.
Anthony Jeselnik is the one who is clearly out of his depth. He talks out of his ass, and acts like he knows what he is talking about when a quick google search proves pretty much everything he said to be wrong. You have to be an absolute *fuckwit* to trash someones name when you clearly have *no* idea what you are talking about.
The thing about Carlin was that he chose every single word carefully. He was a writer with the ability to perform comedically better than anyone. Not everything was perfect, but the reason he read so much on tour was that he was working his shit out for the next special, same as anyone. And he wrote a LOT. And he had to see what worked, just like any comic. But he was working out the language as much as anything. He was a virtuoso of the written word, and he memorized his entire special word for word, not just the general idea of a joke. A lot of people, I feel, didn’t understand that, so reading from a notebook didn’t make sense to them. George changed my life by opening my mind and I will always appreciate the way he honed his craft.

No, he did not die in a hotel, Rogan. He died after waking up with chest pain at his home in Santa Monica. He died in the hospital with heart failure, later that evening. He was to be awarded the Mark Twain award two weeks later.

You have to remember, his televised comedy shows were done after he'd done the routines over and over again. He wasn't having off nights, he was writing and working on new material. Anyone who's creative and writing new stuff will write and rewrite based on the reactions of crowds and their own ideas. Nobody has ever just written a one shot comedy sketch and went out and performed it and that's that. A new idea progresses and evolves into what makes it comedy gold.

A few observations. Full disclosure, George Carlin has been the biggest hero in my life for well over 15 years, so there's likely some bias here.
1. Despite Joe mentioning George as one of the greatest comedians of all-time, Rogan has never given George Carlin the rightful credit he deserves as a Mount Rushmore figure in the world of comedy. I've watched hundreds of his Rogan's podcasts and he somehow manages to discredit George's incredible contributions to the world of comedy. The sole reason Joe is producing a comedy special on a 1-2 year basis is based on the groundwork laid down from George.
2. Anthony Jeselnik is completely inaccurate with many of his facts. Carlin's Vegas residency took place in 2004 and he remained active for another 4 years, with two additional HBO specials. Both were very well done.
3. Speaking specifically on It's Bad For Ya in 2008, it certainly wasn't George's greatest hour of stand up, but it was FAR from horrendous. The notion that he simply "read" his act off a teleprompter is absurd.
4. Yes, there were lines that George would recycle from time to time such as his opener on Abortion, but by and large, Carlin would completely throw out his entire act and start with completely fresh material. I found this hypocritical as Joe even noted that on previous episodes of his podcast.
This is one of the few times I must give Joe a thumbs down.
Finally, someone who actually knows something about Carlin. I don't know what the fuck this dunce was on about.
I think there's also a bias there. George Carlin is my number one standup and I never got to see him live. I'm 39 years old, been a fan since 90-91; never saw him live. I've known people who have, multiple times, and they'll tell you that while he's fantastic, he does have some off nights where he just gets kinda lazy or reads off of a piece of paper or has huge rants. That said, yea, his last couple of specials were very dark and very good. Every artist as prolific as George will have off nights or even be off for stretches of time. But he's absolutely the best there ever was, and I think by far the most fearless (or brave depending on your view).

the one time I got to see Carlin live was when he was practicing the "I kinda like it when a lot of people die" (and yes, he did read it from a card, and had a good joke about how he would be reading from a card) at Humphries by the Bay in San Diego. Absolutely epic set, but had no idea it would be such a legendary pulled sketch shortly after

Parents should show their children George Carlin clips when they get home from public school
George was incredible due to the fact that his mind was blown wide open and the line between right and wrong was permanently blurred. And he was delivering these unbiased, uncolored realizations to an audience that was deeply entrenched in the right/wrong philosophy. So, his rants greatly liberated an audience from their social conditioning and really made people think for themselves again. Once in a while, he came off, a little too raw or did not fully work out the material but a bad night could happen to anyone. He worked hard at his craft. In his younger years, he was cute and funny. But as years went on, he did get a bit grumpy. But, he is by far my favorite and I honor and respect his great, great, great contribution to the advancement of human consciousness. He was a true thinker. To hear him tell his life story is so much fun.
i'm a lyricist so i particularly admire his perception on language. his wordplay and punchlines were clever and his delivery was immaculate, he actually would have been a great battle rapper lol but you can tell he had a reverence for writing and was hyper focused on language which is where a lot of his bits originated from. Def my #1 i miss him

I was at his HBO special NYC at the Paramount theater 1992. He was just awesome. He got real raw on his encore after the cameras shut down.

My coworker who is now retired, did a job for Carlin. Said Carlin was down to earth and asked him about his trade. And was an all around decent person. He was the real deal.

Definitely an irreplaceable and witty comic - WAY ahead of his time and tried to wake people up to the elitist conspiracy he could plainly see and wanted to expose...and he did it in a unique and funny way. Occasionally missed the mark - but when you're in entertainment for decades - you will have some "off" moments. I really liked a lot of his stuff and he was a great story teller.

It’s all subjective man. From what I’ve seen, Carlin was just a really pessimistic guy and there wasn’t much that was funny about that. Louis CK and Burr have both called Carlin the greatest, and I respect his talent but I never found him funny.
Joe and Anthony are both funnier than me and I can still be like “yeah Carlin would complain too much about menial crap” and it’s still a valid opinion regardless of me not being a comedian.

Maybe they say this later in the video..I paused it when they talked about Carlin's death...He did not die in a motel room....He died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica....he did the rehab 4 years before he passed, I think he had performed his last show a week or so before passing.

Even back when I was 10, he made me think about things differently...and just think about things in general. I would rather find out I was wrong about something and correct it BEFORE I make a video spreading ignorance to the world....there are enough people out there talking about things they do not know about...lol.

I really can not think of any of his specials I didn't love..lol. Still do. Look how many things he said that we have seen play out in front of our eyes. i discovered him early on in life...HBO stand up specials used to be so great. Catlin on Campus was one of the first ones I remember sitting and watching. His books are great, too. I have Brain Droppings and Napalm and Silly Putty. Great stuff. There really will never be anyone like him again.

I saw one of his last warm ups before filming the special that year, Trenton War Memorial Theater. He told us that he had to change up his act because of 9-11. He had pages of notes he was going off of, in between classics.
Old guy here, I saw Carlin in Las Vegas in 1981 when he just released "A place for my stuff". Brilliant ! Just jokes about human nature. And weirdly back then the opening act was dancing Vegas Showgirls with the giant feather costumes...

He probably wouldn’t do “great” in the modern form of football but when he played, football was a lot less about super human speed and strength and more about the fundamentals and actual mind of the game. Just like George. George’s material wasn’t always fall out of your chair funny but was deep and thought provoking. It was an intellectual analysis of the world around him through his eyes. Just like Terry Bradshaw he is the best in my eyes but would not be able to exist in today’s comedy scene. He would speak too much truth and not conform to the soft language that he despised that currently has the world by the throat. Peyton Manning has a better “arm” than Bradshaw. Tom Segura has jokes that are “funnier” than George’s. But that’s not necessarily what defines you as the greatest. That’s not putting down Tom or Peyton, just that the best “arm” or “funniest joke” aren’t all that matters sometimes

I was working in the Casbah Lounge at the Sahara Hotel around 1977-78 and Jack Eglash, the entertainment guy, had Carlin in the Copa Room, the hotel’s main room. Eglash actually took a big chance booking Carlin because this was when he (Carlin) had shed the tuxedo and was doing mostly college gigs. I actually met Carlin about a year or so after that at a Holiday Inn I was working at and Carlin was staying in, in Buena Park. I think his wife was in a show at the Cerritos Theater at the time. We talked about that gig and how Eglash broke ground with that booking. Eglash also had Anita O’Day in the lounge too. That was a crazy booking…..a semi-burnt out female jazz singer….who would sing sometimes with her back to the audience. I thought that both bookings were great. David Frye and Jackie Vernon were also in the lounge, although not at the same time.
What ¡s amazing about Carlin is that he got better and better with age. His last 4 specials were mind blowing. When they reference him on TV they always mention his "7 dirty words" routine, which is not even one-tenth as good as his later stuff. By comparison practically all musicians get stale with age and their latter work pales in comparison with their earlier work. Pure genius this guy.
