    I’m two years + behind in this video
    In search bar, I typed in “sewing with slippery fabrics” and your video is one that populated
    I’ll go with it ( them ) for a very first time sewing with fabric that is challenging 🌺I’m quite nervous
    I have many pretty choices I’ve picked up on clearances !!!!!

      That's exciting! Prewash your fabrics (including silks) so you can then use spray starch to tame it. It will make the slippery stuff feel like cotton. After making them up, you'll just need to wash them and they'll return to their original drape!

    Interesting tip regarding silk thread!
    I too always use polyester thread.
    So excited to learn about using spray starch to stabilize fabric. I would let it dry before pressing though, that does eliminate the starch sticking to the iron. Many years of ironing my husband's dress shirts.

    Hi from England. I am making the Blanca jumpsuit at the moment in polyester! It has a windowpane check in it and the 'thing' has taken me ages to make! May I never sew in polyester again. This is my 3rd Blanca, the first in linen and the 2nd in lightweight denim, whipped up in no time!! Thanks for doing these videos.

      I want to sew up the Blanca so badly! I think it’s going to happen this Spring. Poly is not for the faint of heart 😂.

    This pattern reminds me of a blouse I made in 1969. I believe it was a vogue. I'll have to go into my archived patterns and take a look.

    Thanks for the tips! Last year I got about 2 yards of the most beautiful silk charmeuse fabric that I've ever seen but I haven't done anything with it yet because, with how slippery it is, I'm scared of messing up the cutting (and pinning, and sewing, and washing, and fitting....). I'll have to do a test swatch with washing it how you prepped your fabric since that'd a) make prewashing the fabric so much easier and b) means I hopefully won't accidentally wreck a well made shirt because I did the laundry while tired.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 года назад +1

      Personally, I wash and dry my charmeuse in the machines for it’s prewash. It changes the hand a tad and makes the shiny side a bit more sueded feeling, but it makes handling so much easier and then it’s easy to care for. After it’s a garment I wash it on delicate in the machine, air dry it and then throw it into the dryer for just a couple of minutes to release any wrinkles. It works great!

      @@TomKatStitchery Thank you!!! I live in a shared apartment building basement laundry room situation so I can't really throw things in the dryer for a few minutes but I have a small steamer that works well so I'm sure that will be fine!

    Hi Whitney. Great vlog. Do you have to starch 'the heck' out of it or just a bit of coverage? Looking forward to sewing this blouse. I think I'll do it in cotton first to make sure my fit is good. I'm glad you're doing this blouse. Thanks.

    Thanks for the tips!! I plan on trying the starch tip. The spray starch doesn't affect the adhesion of the interfacing?

    • @Toni_Snark
      @Toni_Snark 3 года назад

      Good question! I’m going to try to fuse the interfacing first and then use the starch.

    • @TomKatStitchery

      Oh good! I haven’t noticed any issues with the spray starch affecting the fusible interfacing.

    Thanks, Whitney. I haven’t tackled a silk blouse, yet- but it’s on my bucket list. One question about what technique did you use to mark that busy silk fabric? I’m really enjoying your blouse series.

    Great information. I wonder if silk double Georgette would be a easer and less slippery than crepe de chine. I may try that first? What do you think?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 года назад

      Georgette is a bit “drier and stickier”’than crepe so it won’t skip around as much. That would be a great place to start!

    How much spray do you use over the uncut yardage? Do you just spray and then let it dry after you have taken care of needed pressing areas?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 года назад

      I spray, let it dry a bit and then iron. I just got section by section until I’ve hit the entire yardage.

      Yes. I use large metal washers as pattern weights.

    I tried spray starch on my (poly?)fabric and it really did not help much. I am using a different pattern that has been in my stash, very similar to yours, I think.Any suggestions about where I can find other options (gelatin???)

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 года назад

      I was wondering if the spray starch would work as well on poly fabrics. Deer and Doe has a tutorial on their blog about dipping fabric and letting it soak in a stiffener (it might be gelatin). This might work better for poly.

    How did you cut the bottom at the shorter length without cutting the pattern?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 года назад +1

      That’s a great question! I use a tracing wheel to run over that shorter line and then lift up the pattern to cut right away. I can usually just make out the tiny perforated dots the tracing wheel makes. I should have shown that!
