- Baby orangutan brothers Jim and Joe are enjoy the beautiful spring weather in their huge outdoor enclosure. This video features mainly baby Joe as he returns to mother Jazz to get a comfort feed, before embarking on his climbing adventure with baby brother Jim. the baby orangutans are the best of buddies, as they play on the fantastic climbing equipment provided by Dudley Zoo, in their outdoor habitat.
On this visit Jazz was gently but firmly persuading the two babies to be more independent from her, by pushing them off her when they wanted to be carried around. They are getting big now and too much for Jazz to carry around everywhere! Jazz does however carry them often, especially when she moves them to other areas.
The amazing orangutan family at Dudley Zoo have a fascinating family dynamics!
The background story of Orangutan Babies Jim and Joe
Orangutan Jazz gave birth to her baby son Jim 1 month prior to her daughter Sprout giving birth to her first baby - Joe
Unfortunately Sprout being a young first time mother showed little interest in rearing her baby, amazingly her mother and Joe's grandmother Jazz stepped in to raise the baby as her own whilst raising her own baby son - Jim, made possible because she was able to feed both infants due to already having had a baby
The Two baby orangutans - only a month apart in age have grown up with each other as brothers when in fact they are Uncle and Nephew!
These days Mother Sprout has more interest in the two babies as they are growing up and plays with them just like a big sister, with hero mom Jazz allowing her quality time with them! The babies do rum back to mom Jazz most of the time for comfort and feeding
Jim is slightly larger and has lighter fur than his nephew Joe.
Amazingly Jazz took over the responsibility in true hero grandmother style and is still caring for and feeding both babies.
We are sure that the experience and interaction with the babies will enable Sprout to be ready for motherhood next time around.

I still say I love the hair standing straight up ⬆️,,, and yes I get a little PO because they are adorable and when mine does that I look sickly 😂😂😂😂😂😂
It's always great to see their hairstyles, it is a shame that they loose the crazy hair after a few years. 🥰
They are so big. I wondered if she was still able to carry them because they seemed to be getting heavier. They are so precious. ❤❤

Watching other videos of young orangutans, I feel like these two Are way ahead for their age. I’ll bet it doesn’t hurt to have a playmate your own age to cause trouble with!
To: @chrisfreeman3950 - They do seem to be advanced. Their co-ordination and mobility on the frames are fluid and controlled. I wonder if it genuinely is because they 'feed' of each other's interaction.
There are re-wilding sanctuaries in south-east Asia, where orphaned and rescued orangutans are housed together. One wonders if comparison studies have been conducted with those bred in captivity.
@@petermoody6147There is an excellent documentary on the Smithsonian Channel called Orangutan Jungle School. They rescue orphaned orangutans and teach them how to live in the wild, then release them when they are ready. I believe it is located in Borneo. Excellent program! 😊

Oh my goodness those babies are just so adorable! The outdoor enclosure is really nice with lots of grass. A lot of enclosures at zoos for orangutans don't look like that with all that natural greenery. Mama did a great job raising both of those boys.
