Mark Series Fanclub roll call. State your name and model number :D
I'll start - My name is Leon and I own a Mark IV rev B.
My name is Dan and I'm a Mark addict. Loaded, long chassis MKIII+ Green stripe.
My name is Paul. Not sure if it counts, and will delete post if it doesn't, but I have a Mesa Studio Preamp with a Mark IIC+ mod on the Lead Channel. I know, it lacks the credibility of the real thing, so it' a poor man's Mark series attempt.
My name is Sam and I own a mark IV rev B. I've wanted one since I was 13 and saw an ad in Guitar Player magazine, and it is everything I thought it would be and more!
@@POGFROGULPOP the studio preamp is killer. Nothing wrong with that!!!!
This and the IIC+ are the holy grail of vintage Boogie gear for metal. There's a reason the two favourite Triaxis modes are lead II green and yellow
Same here!
@@LeonTodd I really enjoy your Triaxis videos by the way, especially the continuous control one
incredible playing to go along with this incredible little amp, that clean jam was impeccable
Love the Mark IV content, owned one for 15 years and I’m still learning more about it.
Great playing and explanations! Wonderful work. Thank you for sharing.
This is a wonderful demo! Fantastic tones and playing, thanks!
Many thanks!
Hi there I'm Chris, I've got me a Mark IV Combo rev A this weekend with a matching 1x12 EV Cabinet for an absolute killer price.I love the tones! Thanks for the tweaking advices from Leon.
Outstanding! You always do a nice job but this one is exceptional. I loved every tone you got on this. You always get fantastic heavy drive sounds but those first two sounds you dialed in were just fantastic as well. I owned a Tiaxis back in the 90’s and currently own a Mark 5:25. This was such an awesome demo it’s got me thinking I may need to look into finding a Mark IV. Cheers!
Yeah these amps suck you in with limitless chugs but then unveil themselves as versatile beasts
The final tone with the PRS is absolutely superb. Excellent. One of the best guitar tones I've ever heard. Reminds me of my old Boogie 50 Cal.
Much appreciated!
Awesome tones, Awesome playing man!
Thanks for listening mate!
Leon, your a damn fine musician! Love your playing and the tones you coax out of your gear.
Thanks james :)
"Hi Leon!" Nice clean tones, works well with your Mira! 335 sounds very full and defined. Fine backing tracks, Thanks Tim! Well done Brother and Be Well All!
Many thanks!
Great stuff as always!
Appreciate that my man! I just watched your latest NDSP demo and I think i need new underwear and shoes.
Sounding amazin Leon!
I just got one. I'm a Mark II and Mark III veteran, and also a Recto veteran, and already I can see that I'm going to love this Mark IV.
What a great video you did there !
Mark IV coming later this week (rev b) specifically because of your excellent videos. I, too have been a Marshall guy all my life and never could get a good tone out of the Boogies I’ve tried. Your story inspired me to go back down the rabbit hole. Thank you…I think, lol. Will report back soon!
FFS, this amp can do sooo many things, had no idea since I'm a Marshall-modded Marshall-5150 guy. Great video once again Leon!
Great amp👍
Great playing 💪
Thanks a lot!
I have had a 2001 Mark IV since 2005. LOVE IT! Recorded 2 Misamore records with it. Blended a modded AC30 and a dual racktifier with the Mark IV on the Monolith record (2016), but used the Mark IV exclusively on Horizon (2011) in a lower gain stage and with a Gibson 335.
Fantastic amp!! 30 years old!!
Wild hey. More relevant than ever
Another great video on the wonderfull Mk IV Leon, nice!
Using EL34s really brings the channel 2 to life, a Marshall on steroids and loves to be pushed by a ts type pedal.
Now that's an idea!
you got a new fan here leon,,,good stuff,,,,i live mesa's for decades..
Welcome aboard!
TASTY AF! I want one.
Hey Ryan here. I have a Mk IVA head and a Mark V head. For my rawk side, I love playing my Les Paul Darkback Goldtop thru each, for my Doom side I crank my Gibson Explorer Golden Axe, for leg kicks the 1981 Flying V w Seymour Duncan Super Distortion and Gretsch 5120 with TV Jones Classics for my rockabilly bent. Love your videos Mr Todd!
Great tones and demo! I have two Mark Is (original and slightly modified reissue) and a Kingsnake.
I've loved the Mark IV since hearing it on almost all of Chevelle's music, from The Red in 2002 to Self Destructor in 2021. Such a unbeatable rhythm tone, with excellent definition and bottom end that's unmatched.
Love Chevelle, one of my favourite bands of the new millenium
Chevelle is awesome, I listen to them all the time! The have so many great albums it's unbelievable! I want to get a Mark V but will probably get a Fractal, thanks to Leon!
@@LeonTodd Your videos are amazing! You have great taste in music also!
Same here. The Mark IV is the sound I have in my head because of Chevelle being my #1 band since the first time I heard the debut of Vitamin R on the radio. That said, after many years of using the IV model in the Axe Fx then a Mark V and IIC+, I found an even happier place with Wizard amps, the Hybrid in particular. But I have an absolute need for a IV for so many unnecessary but unavoidable reasons haha.
THIS......ONE of the BEST Amps EVER made !!!! ( Hence the LOVE from MANY Players ) A BOOGIE Fan for LIFE... THANKS TODD !!!!
Big time!!!
I have one in the mail, get it on Monday absolutely cannot wait! I have a mesa boogie F50 that I'll never get rid of, but I have big expectations for the Mark IV
I have a Mark IV Rev A that I use with my Jackson Rhodes for thrash, PRS Mira for blues rock leads, Strat for funk and blues, 80's Greco LPC copy for what ever really, and my Schecter C-7 for crushing metal tones. It's a pretty amazing amplifier.
The words "Mesa Boogie Mark...." means instant like! Of course I love the high gain stuff, but I really love the tones and ESPECIALLY your playing on the lower gain segments. Some really sweet note choices there. It's not a true Mark series, but geesh this is making me really miss my Tri-axis. Why the heck did I ever sell it? :D
Triaxis still counts IMO :D
JP-2C here. Absolutely love that amp.
Jeff. I have a Mark IV rack mount purchased new in 1992 serial #5027 revision A. Last summer I bought 3 Mark III combo amps. 2 blue stripes and 1 red stripe that was later modified by Mesa Boogie to have the + option. I found a Mark IV combo amp on ebay from Japan. I didn't know it was wired from the factory for 110 volts. It should be 117 volts for my location. I plugged it in and fried it. That amp still had the factory tags with people's initials as it moved through stages of production. It was repaired and rewired for 117 volts. Serial #2051. That thing is clean and barely used. It sounds better than all the other amps I mentioned. As soon as I hit that first chord and could feel it, I just knew it was the Mark IV I wanted 30 years ago. 😊 A Boss EQ pedal through the effects loop enhances the feel, but it's very special to know the amp has that already.
:D
This amp is an enigma to me. Very easy to lose the sweet-spot... Great playing btw: This video helped ALLOT!!
I loved that Rhythm 2 sound, it reminds me of my Laney LH50R! Might not be the heaviest sound but it is a fun sound.
I use a Mark V amp mostly in Mark IV mode. Best amp ever made. The texture of the gain and the tightness of the low-end is unrivaled. The clean is most pristine of all tube amps but with still some warmth. Only for classic hard rock crunch do I switch to a Marshall.
They really are a classic tone. I have a Mesa Mark V 25 watt that I use different pedals and processors with. Awesome amp. But I honestly haven't been playing it much lately and been playing my FM3 all the time thru my studio monitors and another very clean combo amp for practice and writing. Thoughts have been coming into mind too of selling it to turn it over and make room for other gear as space for me is limited. And I've been spending too much on new gear lately.
gerald rauch reporting for duty...2008 revision B, sir!!! i ABY mine with a EVH 50W stealth...pure tonal bliss!!! cheers, leon!!!
I had a .22 many years ago, but lacking the skills to really get the most out of it, I sold it during a late-90's gear purge. I sometimes wish I'd kept it, although I see they aren't terribly expensive to buy today.
I've never really had much want for any of the Mark series amps, but I can see the allure. Maybe once I can get my current collection better set-up so I can play them easily, I'll start thinking about other amps to add to my collection.
I want one. Hope I can afford it one of these days. That's the dream amp for me.
OMG, you always sound amazing ! What's next?
5 Killer Tones, Zoom 707
After owning a MkIIc in 1984 and a Dual rectifier in the 90’s realised I should have bought one now! But the FM3 is pretty darn good with those tones. BTW I was watching David Levi on the Fractal site and got some of his patches. What a great player of many styles and great technique!
My love for the Mark series goes way back to the mid 80's when I first started playing guitar. That's when I began to dissect guitar tones. I had loved the tones from bands like Night Ranger, Metallica, Anthrax, Whitesnake, and Suicidal Tendencies to name a few.
I had to get a Boogie! And by '89, I was the proud owner of a loaded MKIII with matching halfback 4x12!
Brad's Mesa tone IS FUCKING UNREAL... SERIOUSLY OVERLOOKED.( AND HE'S AMAZING ...) As well as SUICIDAL !!!!! UNREAL TONES... BRAD made ME a BOOGIE FAN ALL those years ago !!!!!
@@mikegallagher2732 Right on man!👍
Most people go "oh yeah 80's tones, modded Marshalls!" for a good reason, but my favourite tones from that era are all boogies. When i learned Sykes used one on 1987 it flipped my world around.
@@LeonTodd Same my friend!
Killer!!
Ha! Spent yesterday afternoon programming a Mark IV based FM3 patch... Cheers!
p.s. That clip I played for you of me playing was using multiple Mark IV emulations on a popular plugin.
I've had my Mark IV combo for years. Running it with a fractal fx8 and the wood is a Gibson Les Paul Traditional.
Lovely rig!
Awesome tones, awesome demo. Thank you man.
You already teached me how to setup a JTM45, now how to use use Mesa Mark, you simply know what you're talking about and it makes me happy for few minutes in this shity world.
I appreciate that mate :)
Baller. I’ve got a great sounding Studio PreAmp.
get it out and thrash it!
The holy grail
Very cool... now it would great on getting the same tones out of an Axe Fx III. That would be a cool Vireo.
Excellent demo! And I see you reversed the infamous “black tape mod” on your Les Paul… 😉
While I never personally connected with Boogies, some of my favorite players of all time swear by them. In fact, the newer Petrucci signature Mark model has made me rethink trying them out again. Cheers!
Dual graphic EQ's on the JP IIC+ is KILLER!!!
Gibson finally paid him off 💰 💰💀
@@Starch1b2c3d4a authentic gibdollars confirmed
Rich. Mark IV rev B wide combo. Picked it up a few years back for a mere $850 USD. It would take an extreme force to rip this from my possession.
Man. What a great amp. I want one maybe someday, but modelers can do it so good. I still think my number 1 dream amp if I were a pro player would be the snake skin 50 watt
Love this channel.
When I was in the Army brother you were the type of guy I would have picked to be in combat with. All around great guy. Those amps just have their own sound you can't beat. When I saw John Sykes with blue murder he was using boogie heads with marshall cans. I believe. Or he was in stereo. I think the bass player was using a marshal maybe. They had the best show. Them and winger. What a show.
Be safe buddy. Great video as always brother. ♥️🤟♥️🤟 Off to the doc. Have been sick with heart problems. Getting better.
Two of my favourite tour souvenirs are an army jacket and an air force jacket given to me by veterans after shows we did in the states. Humbling moments. The Hot Rod has your name all over it.
Glad to hear you're getting better!
@@LeonTodd Thanks man. Yeah. I have a lot of vets in my family. My stepdad was in Aussia land on leave. He said the Australians were so nice to him.
Thanks for the kind words sir.
Nice tones and fantastic playing brother! I have a JP2C with a Recto 4x12. I run it with the Axe III in 4CM. Best of both worlds IMHO.
How are you liking your JP2C ??? I WISH i could afford one .... : ( !!!!!!! I am Currently still using my TRIAXIS with the 2:90 power amp... STILL.....
WHAT A RIG!
Damn I'd love to play through your rig!
@@mikegallagher2732 I love the JP2C, but your rig is no slouch my friend.
@@LeonTodd What can I say? I'm a shameless Petrucci fanboi.
Very detailed video on the Mark IV. Very easy to follow your logic also, especially since I own a Mark IV, which I bought brand new in 1990. (Short Body Combo)

Question Please: What speaker were you running the amp through as it recorded very well. If you could share what mic was used that would be great too.
Very nicely done video Leon. Thanks.
Phil
NYC Area
been on the bucketlist for way to long loved my dual rec but still have never owned a mark iv one day :(
Dman, the 6:50 riff sounded a lot like Piecemaker's Hippie Gave Me a Note (a local small band from 10 years ago). Really good chord progression.
Thanks mate! that's a Ragdoll song called Overnight Sensation
It's crazy how so many people see the Mark Series as metal amps, when the first guitarist that actually piqued my interest for these amps was Prince. The MK1 was used on Purple Rain's rhythm, and he used a MK2 and MK3 throughout the 80s. These are clearly very versatile amps, and I'm kicking myself for not looking into them sooner. I understand why I haven't though, I never had an interest in thrash or that sound of metal lmao
Awesome tones. Next video: same tones on fractal 😉
I have a Mark IV rev B and love tweaking it. Ive been capturing it on the Quad Cortex for fun lately under profile AlanW
Mark V 25 into a Mesa 1x12 v30 with a Strymon DIG, $25 chinese tube screamer for extra tightness when using my 7 string. Its the shit, I kinda just wish I bought the big one so that I'd never have to tell anyone to turn down at a jam again.
Your heart rate after a Mark series Boogie “5 minute tones” video! _____^_^_^_^ 👍
The best!
Forget the amp, that blues phrasing was baddass.
even Prince played a Boogie
holy crap australians are dropping videos. i should go to bed
please make more of these mark series videos Mr Todd. I love these amps and i love your playing. thanks for the like :)
Alex Lifeson used a mark 5 on it’s clean channel for Rush’s last tour, anything is possible!
Hi Leon - nice work, these videos on the Mk IV have really helped me unlock some nice tones from mine. I've got a RevA and a RevB, I think I prefer the latter!
Just one question - are you using pentode or triode on the R2 and Lead channels? Thanks!
Triode! Please tell me you run them in stereo when possible :)
@@LeonTodd I have been tempted... I am trying to work out the kinks in my pedalboard to do it, I think I can share the loop between the two. I don't think however my bandmates will appreciate the amazing tones that will come pouring forth from the conjoined Boogies, as they already complain I'm too loud and take up too much room on stage :-D
Great sounds man… really! Does the new Mark V series work in the same way? I mean: mark V, V:25 and V:35 have pre gain tone controls and the graphic eq before the power amp? Or does they have a more “modern” construction: gain, tones, graphic eq, and power section? Thx for your answer!
Pretty much, the V has some extra modes but it's definitely got that classic boogie architecture
This amp should be reissued
Hay, may have missed it but have you ever spent time with a MB Mark V 90 watt? I am trying so hard to fall in love with it and I have found some good tones, but, I am in front of it messing with the dials more than I want to. Its almost like it changes every week! I run a Tube Screamer in front and a EBS chorus and Boss Dig delay in the loop. Maybe its the tubes but just cant get into the goose bump zone!
Leon love your Ax Fx videos. You’ve basically convinced me to buy one: could you do one on how to create the great STP tones he got on songs like Plush during that era? As I understand it went through Roland Chorus into a cleaner AC30 and modern Marshall amp
You could run two amps in parallel to get the DeLeo "clean but dirty" blend and then some 8 voice chorus. I did a video recreating the Intelliverb 8v chorus on the Axe.
@@LeonTodd thanks for the quick response! Is it possible to do this with an FM3, or do you have to have AxeFX3 to do dual amps? If you get a chance please show us an example of one in your videos and/or make for download on the user rigs?
Hahahaha V that's I feel about my boogies as well. No words needed, just V hahaha
Great review and sounds!! Do I need a Mark III??(really tempted to pick one!) I have Rockverb MKII and a Dual RECT G! Cheers
Absolutely :D
I have a Jp2c+, and a MkV, would love a MkIV
The (Un)holy trinity!
I have an ENGL, Bogner Uberschall and Mezzabarba MZero. Would it be worth getting a Mesa Mark V or JPC2 to complement my setup or another amp like a Diezel, Friedman or Wizard?
Great video, I just dont feel Marks and Im happy with my Single Recto, every other guy will tell you the opposite but for me its too compressed.
Owner of a Mark IVa and a Mark III red stripe. Run them in 7 cable method (stereo) with an Axe Fx as the “brains” of the rig (provides routing and effects).
Also do the same with my Recto and Stiletto when I want a different tonal base.
For me, No need for anything else…
Yeah that's a great everything rig right there
@@LeonTodd thanks Leon!
Btw: people might not know that the earlier Marks have their graphic EQ stage POST loop. Mark V’s have the GEQ PRE loop. I tried originally to use a IV and V in stereo and found them incompatible due to this issue (although I suppose a person could add an extra outboard GEQ pedal in the V loop to compensate…)?
Awesome, my MkIV never sounded that good. Probably should have spent more time with it..
Mine as well, mine is noisy as hell. Probably needs retubing.
MKII A & B def need OD pedal!
You got a MK IIA ???
Some good LT stank face in this vid
Have you ever had the chance to compare the mark iv to a triple crown?
Love your videos!!!! Shout out form abq new Mexico the nuke city!!
Great video and a great starting point for a beginner Mark IV owner. Do you have the backing track that starts around 6:45? Thanks again!
That's a ragdoll song called "Overnight Sensation" - I'll put the stems up on patreon
so for at home what's better? this or an axe fx / kemper / amp sim? the simulators are of course more convenient for recording and being silent etc....but which one inspires you more?
The fractal Mark series models are absolutely amazing, that's what I play the most these days
Hey Leon have you ever combined a Mesa recto and a mark series amplifier if so can you make a video of that please thanks??
Man, that first tone is not something I would have associated with a mark series amp. It sounded great nonetheless.
I've got a f50 combo amp, I want one of these but it's hard to pull the trigger because they are fairly similar to my ears .... at least for high gain.
It's a toss up between this and the jcm800
Im curious how you rate the mark with the amplitube plug in
Hi. Your amp is from what year? Thanks
2:10 yes, that some sugar right there. :D
I’ve got a MV Combo I bought new in 2011 and I’ve had it for sale for a year and a half. I’ll take 1600 and I have no takers.
Hi, what speaker does the amp have?
ouuuuuuch
#5 - no sustainer pickup req'd
Sweet, picking one up for 300$ tomorrow. Looking forward to infinite tweaking. This amp nearly has more features than the axe fx III
Stolen Craigslist find?
Ill give you 250 for it
No you aren’t, but cool comment.
@@cmurduh1 No you are right, it isnt tomorrow, it was 7 months ago. Cool comment tho
Even if it were 7 months ago, it never happened.
Mark IV rev B and a JP6 :)
Hi and thx. I have my rev a since one day and at the moment i dont find the sound for shreddind. The legatos are ok but the strict picking a horrorfull lol at the moment i am a best guitarist with the iii blue stripe. With treble 9 bass 0.5 mid 0.5 lead 7 input 8 or 9. On the iv searching a liquid sound i you have an idea merci beaucoup.
Your "master" settings are very violent!! probably that the whole neighborhood is now deaf!! Seriously, this settings at a very high master level are impossible to reproduce directly from a real cabinet? The Mark IV is my favorite mesa that I had and one of my favorite amp, very good sound and fabulous playing Leon!
I have the luxury of a cab room here so I can set the master to "face melting" and get away with it.
Not sure between a marshall or mesa
Have a sg, les paul with sh-4 seymour Duncan's, ltd snakebyte and schecter hellraiser
Love bands like Tool, Chevelle, Creed, Metallica, Traverser, System Of A Down
A Marshall DSL would probably get you ballpark for a lot of those sounds. So would a Boogie :p
Is the presence on ZERO in the lead channel?
