0:00 Incredible. I always thought there was a painted version of the portrait, but it's actually a real man standing still in the frame. You can see his left arm move very slightly.
Not sure what bugs me more about the scene. That Kenneth Branagh hides multiple guards in his office portraits for hours at a time in the unlikely event some one breaks in. Or that the guard behind the desk had a clear shot of Will Smith with his back turn for a while and didn’t take the easy shot.
Some of it was “cheesyness” drawn towards kids that’s only thing I can think of. The story wasn’t the greatest but the dialogue between the characters was very well imo. A lot of funny banter that only now years later when you’re older you actually get
Will Smith even said in an interview he should not have made the film. Smith was great in the Fresh Prince series and several films, the recasting and remaking of older movies (or TV series made into feature films) told me long ago Hollywood has been out of fresh ideas for decades. This trend started long before this movie was made.
I think the New Liberty stoeyline is based on the Fort Pillow Massacre and McGrath is based on Nathan Bedford Forrest. There are major differences between them. The real Fort Pillow Massacre involved Confederate soldiers under Forrest's command slaughtering the black Union soldiers inside the Fort when they tried to surrender. There were civilians casualties but they were an armed Militia from a nearby town who joined the battle, there were no innocent women or children killed. There also wasn't an anachronistic army tank.
Yeah the New Liberty story adds a layer to Jims character as well as Loveless. You first see Jim as this lone wolf duty driven man to protect his country but underneath is an angry vengeful guy looking for the man who butchered all those people as well as his parents. The twist of his being Loveless made him more than just this charismatic guy. He's a damn psychopath underneath
But there were still 6 dead guys visible on the floor. Excluding the one to the side of the first guy which wasn't shown but a shot was sent that way. So 7 guys he wouldve killed (also he never shot up to the ceiling to that's bs and one of the bodies).
She made the mistake of looking at the portrait, allowing Will Smith to notice the assassin in the portrait behind him. I think she would have successfully had him killed had she not done that!

@@tinafoster8665 LOL you're funny! Still though Miss East and Mr. West should've ended up together at the end. I hated how Rita was only using him and Gordon to save her husband.
@@bradcouch457 I agree, but I still love to think that she lied about her father being her Husband. It would've made the scene genius if that were the case. Women be women, I guess.
When I was a kids and she mentioned he was in an authentic cowboy outfit with six guns, I thought she literally meant he had six revolvers on him and wondered where he kept them all.
Will Smith turned down the role of Neo in the Matrix because he thought the pitch for it was terrible. He did this movie instead. He would later say it was the “worst career choice of his life”.
Why has no one commented on the fact that Loveless literally pays hitmen to do nothing all day but pretend to be paintings in some type of office on the off chance someone breaks in to do a wax rubbing of a map he just drew? Can you imagine your boss asking you to do something so incredibly silly That makes even less sense that building an 80 foot mechanical spider that fires flaming explosives. I mean Will in this move must be an idiot, not being able to tell the difference between 2 and 3 dimensional pictures.
Will Smith had many interracial relationships in this movie. King a black woman in the beginning. An Eastern Asian-French woman. And then Salma Hayek. This might be a bad movie, but Will Smith kiss some gorgeous models in this movie.
Totally agree. In his place I would have embrace her closely to me while moving her from any line of fire and then started to shoot every hidden guard, then take her with me to a safe place. The way he let her get shot and left her semi naked on the floor annoys me.
The way that guy in the painting comes to life is still mind-bogglingly stunning to watch.
That's actor Ty O'Neil from the Mighty Ducks franchise who played the cowboy 🤠 character Robinson
Right? Caught by me off guard when I first saw it 😅
It's like a jumpscare, but it doesn't scare you until you notice...so cool.
I saw this movie over 20 years ago and I specifically wanted to find this scene for this reason

Imagine your job being sitting still on a painting in the exact same position for hours
"OK so imma need you to stand in this painting very still until the very slim possibility of a government agent coming in here to snoop around."
It'll look good on your resume.
The way they just cut to Gordon in disguise conveniently pulling out a rope yelling “Hang Heem!!” Just kills me everytime I watch this movie 😂😂😭
Looks like we need to teach ya'll a little lesson about how to behave in a polite society
I always loved the way he pronounced that!
I love this movie. Especially the New Liberty storyline and the way Jim West avenges the people who were murdered by Loveless.
