Well, looks like your coach was a substitute one, as the Czech ARmpee half-bistro car (with the full ČD JLV restaurant offering) should be running in this place. About the open seating 2nd class cars at 14:55 : I travelled the same route inside one of them. They are pretty comfortable, nothing wrong with them.
The aircraft is a Sukhoi 17/22 (SU17/22). An SU22 is a development of the SU17, hard to tell which it is from the distant shot. It dates from the 1970/80s fighter/ground attack aircraft of Russian design but used by many of the old Warsaw Pact airforces.
It can also be Su-20, Polish AF also use them. It was initial export version of Su-17, which was later developed to Su-22. Main difference (not only one) between 17 & 20/22 is powerpant. In Su-22 is same engine as in Mig-23 to easier maintance at smaller airforces of Warsaw pact client states.
I'm pretty certain the loco at Sosnowiec is a Ty-51 2-10-0 heavy freight loco designed by Cegielski Works, Poznan, in the early 1950s. The video reminds me of my travels on PKP between the 1960s and 1980s when I visited relatives in Poland. The trains were overcrowded then too! And they were all green - so at least they look better now even if the coaches are still those used in the 1980s!
From what I recall you said about the first class coach you travelled in, the stock was on a par, agewise (more or less) with UK Mark 3/HST stock. I know the latter have been refurbished a few times but I think this comparison shows how good UK Mark 3 stock is. Interesting trip nonetheless. For an end to end journey of that length rail tends to be the default choice and maybe operators will only up their game when there's serious (car?) competition.
Thank you for the trip report! I agree that the 1st class coach was older and for such cost, underwhelming, however it's worth saying that the report is no longer up to date because the train consist today is slightly different. With the new timetable, the IC112 was "upgraded" to EC112 and the 1st class coach was replaced by a combined 1st class / bistro coach with ~9 reserved seats for dining and some 2nd class coaches were refurbished.
Interesting review, Dylan. I don't know Polish railways personally but I do in the case of Czech railways (and Slovak) and I've been on that stretch between Ostrava and Prague quite a few times. Sorry you found it not quite up to scratch and I dare say that, as you say, by Central European standards that was pretty steep price-wise, which I suppose shows one just how expensive rail travel is in the UK generally. I note that the loco at the end was the now-legendary Class 150 'Banán' ('Banana') from the 1970s, BTW.
Hope no one takes offense, but the headrest covers look like oversized diapers. And it always surprises me when you initially show the map to show your departure and destination stations, then expand the map. Gets me every time. I didn’t mention it in your last trip, but I’m glad you bring your girlfriend with. I’m sure it makes for a nicer time.
Hi :D I would like to talk about some particular topics, which you have mentioned during the video :D First of all, thank you for that video and your work :D I would like to start from the cities: Sosnowiec and Katowice. The first one is the main city of Dąbrowa Basin (or Dąbrowa Coal Basin) and the second is a capital of Silesian Voivodeship and the biggest city of Upper Silesia region. :) As I am person whose hometown is Katowice, I had few opportunities to be in that building at 8:00. You were thinging about what is that and why there are two vehicles between the station and that buildng and I am coming with the answer right know :D That building is a... 4th Transportation Technical High School (ex. Railway Technical High School) in Sosnowiec. ;) The steam locomotive is a Ty51 (Ty51-133) which is an engine based on Ty246 "Tumman" locomotives desing which were produced in 1946, by ALCO, Baldwin and Lima for Polish State Railways (PKP). As the bulding has a department of aviation, the plane is standing near that Ty51 enigne. But even for a rail transportation geek, that fighter jet, or being more precise, the fighter-bomber - Sukhoi Su-22 "Fitter" (the modernized Su-17 version), makes an incredible impression for me. :) P.S. If you read the names of polish cities, which end by "*wice" oraz "*wiec", the pronunciation of that is [vi:tse] and [viea:ts] - so you can read "Katowice" as [Kae:to:vi:tse] and "Sosnowiec" as [Sos:no:viea:ts]. I`don`t know if that square brackets are understandable but that "ts" can be compared to the high hat sound of the drum set.😃 But I would like to mention that you perfectly pronunced the name of the border village Chałupki.😊 Have a great day and we are waiting for next great trips and videos. 😁
Actually the Aee140 First class carriage was originally Hungarian made Raba-Győr type Ba Second class carriage, one of the series which was produced for Czechoslovakian Railways between 1967 and 1970. Said carriages were modernised to First class with current interior in 1996 and 1997, later in 2011 air conditioning was added without big changes in interior (windows were changed from classical with upper half sliding down to give wide opening to current windows). The mentioned years 1974-1985 match up with years of production of A149 type East German made Bautzen carriages. While East Bloc constructions were more or less similar, the Raba-Győr products were a separate thing from Bautzen products despite similarity.
As someone from the UK, £36 to travel over 400 miles in first class feels like phenomenal value for money. But i understand you're comparing this ticket with continental European prices so perhaps it isn't the best value. Great review!
The thing with first class in Czechia is that very few people take it. Most people just take the second class. Many think it's unnecessary expense, others like the spontanious vibe of the second class.
$70 Australian to get to Moss Vale from Melbourne First Class sounds about right, so it's not all bad. Looks more comfortable than First Class on an XPT at any rate.

@@70M45-c9r Well most, but then there is me. I, as a train conductor, like some level of comfort when I am travelling to and from my shifts, so I bought a special offer 50% off of first class and I usually don't travel second anymore.
Small thing, but good to see the main cabin lights are aimed at the ceiling to create an indirect comfortable light - unlike so many trains that are glary and overlit.
Your strategy of releasing every Friday AND Monday is a good one. It's something that marks the end of the week....and provides a reprieve from the stress of a new work week.
Same coaching stock as a couple of decades ago, but a vast improvement in Warsaw Central -- much more than a "refurbishment" vs. the previous concrete monstrosity which made Birmingham New Street appear "pleasant". ; )
I recommend trying a finnish intercity train. They offer quite a comfortable ride, and they are very spacious because of the wide track gauge of 1 524mm.
My dear old Uncle, who is no longer with us (because he passed away), was a railway man. To avoid being disturbed by the bright lights around the station and surrounds, he wore an eyeshade. Very common in those days. Even some tennis players wore them. Next time I go on an extended rail journey, I intend taking an eye shade along. There is always that passenger sitting beside you who wants to read or eat a sodden cheese and lettuce sandwich at two o'clock in the morning!
Great video as always Dylan, thanks. £37 for a journey of nearly 9 hours in first class is still not bad compared to the UK. OK, difficult to make comparisons I know because of regional income differences. I actually quite like those older carriages for longer journeys, but maybe not 9 hours - not sure my body would now cope with that length of time on 1 train! Yes, you're right, for that length of journey one would expect far better catering. I wonder how many people actually travel the whole length of the service.
If you think the trains are crowded when filmed, I was chatting with one of my stream viewers from Warsau today and with almost 4M refugees he said its so crowded everywhere. Poland has really stepped up onto the World Stage and it's people have been magnificent. (I'm not Polish). Whenever I see those old six seat compartments I can't help thinking of Hitchcock's Masterpiece The Lady Vanishes. Pretty confident you know it, if not you must seek it out as a train person.
I've done that trip but overnight in the crouchettes which may or may not still run.It is very slow for the distance but any faster you wouldn't have much sleeping time on the night train.
You get a much better deal taking the EuroNight service on the same route. I paid €38 in a sleeper with Nighjet service including free breakfast with 6 free items and amenity kit.
Don't know if you have seen it but there is a webcam at Warsaw West showing all the platforms and the upgrades. Looked an interesting trip, but as you say, nothing special. Thanks for the video
Travel tip: check the prices from both PKP Intercity and CD. On my recent trip Krakow - Breclav KPK was way cheaper. Also on the route in this video I tried for first class in two weeks time, PKP +- €30, CD +-45. PKP does sell only promotional international tickets and the website is much more tricky/error prone to work with… but nice saving if it works out.
Hey Dylan, is there a possibility of you checking out the Class 317's on the West Anglia Mainline? They will almost certainly be retired this year, so there won't be long to take a look at them.
If you do take a look, they usually run on stopping services typically as far as Bishops Stortford, my old home town. Safe bet is either boarding at Liverpool Street, Stratford, or Bishops Stortford Platform 3.
Hmm the travelling time is way too long; should've been 5 to 6 hours. The toilet is strangely old compared to other refurbished parts of the coach. P. S. The Jet fighter You mentioned looks like MiG-21.
I can't see so much difference between 1. and 2. class compartments. And in genereal, except for the lack of catering and the relatively long journey time I wouldn't know what to complain about. Also the ticket price appears to me quite normal.
Dylan, great film. Thx. EuroCity trains in Poland and the Czech Republic always have a good quality restaurant or bar car. However, during the pandemic, some railway operators excluded these cars for safety reasons. Currently, the best trains of České dráhy go towards Germany and Austria, as is the case with PKP Intercity trains. A change for the better is to come in December 2023, when České dráhy will introduce connections between the Czech Republic and Poland with the RailJet trainsets. The new links from Prague are to be extended to Tricity - the Polish coast. On the other hand, PKP Intercity already includes its newly manufactured 175A cars in its routes. You will be able to see them on Eurocity trains in services like; Warsaw - Berlin - Warsaw, Gdynia - Berlin - Gdynia, Krakow - Berlin - Krakow, Gdynia / Warsaw - Vienna - Warsaw / Gdynia.
Sadly, there won't be any Railjet trainsets on EuroCity trains to Poland. Next delivery of Railjet trains will cover only Budapest/Vienna - Prague - Berlin services, and current railjets are fully occupied (6 out of 7 daily) on the line Prague - Graz.
The Warsaw station was quite nice with all those shops and the handy information screens. The train itself not so much. Why no open seating for first class? I wouldn't have enjoyed that compartment if it had been full. The bottle of water was also not much for a first class ticket. Up to now the Czech trains you've taken have always had amazing food offerings. The blue mosaic tiles in the toilets was an unexpected 19th century touch until you explained it was some kind of wall covering.
Well actually, all these trains are officially branded as EuroCity, but PKP, in order to “simplify” things, always rebrand all international trains to IC on Polish territory. As a result, every Prague-bound IC train from Warsaw becomes a EC train and every Warsaw-bound EC train from Prague becomes a IC train in Bohumín. Also, usually ARmpee coaches operate on this route, providing you with much better seating and most importanly an all-inclusive on-board restaurant service.
I recently went first class from Warszawa for a three hour journey. It cost the equivalent of £16 single in an open format coach. An illuminated panel told me every station we were calling at and announcments were both po polsku and po angielsku. I hate to think what the equivalent would have cost in England.
It appears that the plane and train are in the grounds of an institution whose name loosely translates as 'Technical Secondary School No. 4 Transport'.
5-10 Mbps on Wi-Fi; I'll gladly take that over what the UK and EMR has to offer! That could probably handle HD video streaming, as well as being plenty fast enough for all other general tasks. A lot of UK trains have abysmal Wi-Fi which barely loads webpages properly, let alone anything else.
Those 6 people compartments use to be terrible for "comfort" and human-social "relations", I wonder why they keep on using that configuration in modern trains, anyway, this was another interesting journey, thanks for the ride man.
strange... this service should have included the bistrocar - half 1st class, half bistro (with another normal 1st class being coupled for obvious reasons) I wouldn't give up on this route so easily, as this route also offers the overnight ČD sleeper, which is much higher quality in my opinion and it's the renovated sleeping stock. Well, maybe next time :)
Funny, Ceske Drahy are usually good. Maybe this is their one off-day? Edit: The plane looks like a Sukhoi SU-17 strike fighter. Pretty fair piece of kit, really.
So why do you call it underwhelming? You seem miffed that it's not a flagship service, and you were stuck in a compartment with "commoners". You bought a seat, not an "experience".
You are wrong, Aee140 was created in 1996-1998. Also using old cars from 1960s, but the resulting car has nothing to do with them. There was also second upgrade, in 2009 with the installation of air conditioning and in 2018 with installation of electronic information system. These cars are bad, but this timetable is situation okay, there is an bistro-car at all trains and the capacity of the train fully corresponds to the demand, even though it may seem short. I don't see it fair in 2022 to evaluate a service that is no longer relevant and that was known to be bad. That is why a correction was made and the situation is better today, but I miss that in the video if it is released at a time when the correction has already been made.
One might book the whole compartment. Then take an attractive companion. Bring a picnic basket. Some champagne. Lock the door. Close the curtains and have a wonderful assignation du jour.
If you look at the first coachbuilder plate it might say this VEB Bautzen because during the Communist era People's Republic of Poland and former Czechoslovakia Comecon had the former East Germany ( German Democratic Republic) manufacture long-distance Railway coaches like the one you are on right now. While former People's Republic of Poland Russia Aircraft and Trams Czechoslovakia Electric buses Trams. Russia and Ukraine locomotives aircraft helicopters. If you are wondering they can also attach Wien Hbf coaches to the train by separating at Bohumin for an Austrian locomotive to run all the way to Wien Hbf in the form of ÖBB 1216. Poland version EU44 and in some cases you might find it Slovakia locomotive at Bohumin for Prague/Breclav if there's no CD Czech railways available for those moves
A few years ago I was traveling from Warsaw to Prague and there were no direct trains. I had to buy a ticket from PKP to the Czech border and a separate ticket on CD to Prague. Of course PKP was a couple of hours late and I missed the CD train. I got a later train to Prague on my flexible ticket with a new seat reservation..
My main problem with this (and several other) international service is the travel time. This train should not need over 6 hours for that distance. The railway line between Warsaw (or actually: Grodzisk Mazowiecki) and Katowice (well, Zawiercie) has a max speed of 200 km/h (now going to be increased to 250 km/h). And I believe that the main railway line between Ostrava and Prague does not have a limit of 130 km/h either. Also: this train should stop in Warsaw, Katowice, Ostrava and Prague. By cutting out unnecessary stops (with all due respect for people living in those towns) another half hour or more can be gained. As for the price: I think it's very decent. €45 for first class (and, I assume, about €30-35 for second class?) is not expensive at all!
But these stops are necessary as the train is not funded by the government and has to attract more people along the route because of that. Kolín, Pardubice, Česká Třebová and Olomouc are smaller cities, but they serve more as important transfer hubs. Stopping only in Warsaw, Katowice, Ostrava and Prague would cause emptiness on board, because international passengers are not the majority on these trains. Actually, these trains are mostly empty on cross-border section between Bohumín and Rybnik.
not a fan of those little rooms to travel in. I understand, but I'd really feel oppressed. The legroom in second class was awful. Those crowds in Poland were surprising. The Polish terminal was very pleasant. Keep travelling & I'll keep watching.
I always find it disappointing when there is no catering service on a first-class train, especially one of this length.
I agree!
@@DylansTravelReports when will you do Ashford-Eastborne?

Sadly, there won't be any Railjet trainsets on EuroCity trains to Poland. Next delivery of Railjet trains will cover only Budapest/Vienna - Prague - Berlin services, and current railjets are fully occupied (6 out of 7 daily) on the line Prague - Graz.
@@iRocketQueen The test rides already have taken place in Poland in summer last year.
Amazing.
The blue mosaic tiles in the toilets was an unexpected 19th century touch until you explained it was some kind of wall covering.
thank you
Looks like a great opportunity for PKP & CD to improve their game.
the fighter jet and steam engine are from a technical high school adjacent to the tracks
Given the polish & czech minimum.wages and the service standards, not a bargain price at all I am afraid. Thanks
I think that’s a pretty good looking hard product and it’s the soft product that lets you down here. Nevertheless, worth it for £36!
Was it 10 minutes late because of you filming the compartment?
Great trip. I think for first class compartment, it should be 4 seats per compartment instead 6.
As far as I can check by today this train is now using different coaches including some some sort of bistro car.
What kind of enhanced food service is offered in Czech Republic?
Usually, a full dining car.
Those 6 people compartments use to be terrible for "comfort" and human-social "relations", I wonder why they keep on using that configuration in modern trains, anyway, this was another interesting journey, thanks for the ride man.
Because there are enough people who like this compartments into sharing a loud room with more then 50 people.
strange... this service should have included the bistrocar - half 1st class, half bistro (with another normal 1st class being coupled for obvious reasons)
I wouldn't give up on this route so easily, as this route also offers the overnight ČD sleeper, which is much higher quality in my opinion and it's the renovated sleeping stock. Well, maybe next time :)
This was my train from Krakow to Prague back in August: /watch?v=whFnnawHj0E
Till last year there was this Aee, from mid of December 2021 is this service with bistro car.
I don't call 6 people crammed into a 2x3 seating configuration First Class.
1st class not 4 but 6?
Yes, the usual for most trains (equivalent to 2+1)
no snack time? dang!!
Love your pronouciations.
Looks like a passenger or cargo jet
Funny, Ceske Drahy are usually good. Maybe this is their one off-day?
Edit: The plane looks like a Sukhoi SU-17 strike fighter. Pretty fair piece of kit, really.
The export wariants were designated SU-22.
@@reeingre Noted. Thanks muchly.
So why do you call it underwhelming? You seem miffed that it's not a flagship service, and you were stuck in a compartment with "commoners". You bought a seat, not an "experience".
awesome 👍👍👍
I paid €25 for a couchette on the night service. A miserable experience.
Technikum Kolejowe in Sosnowiec, railway school of Sosnowiec.
Boa tarde Dylans lindo trem 🚆 🚆 🚆 gostei 👍 show seviso sem bufé em um trem primeiro classe
Loco hauled…..traditional compartment stock……first class…..what’s not to like ?…… precisely FOOD / OnBoard Catering !
Dylan. It's pronounced approximately Tsheskay Drahy.
Aww yeah. And Katowitze
I was going to say something like that, but at least it was 'Pardubitze'.
@@christopherbentley7289 yeah
One might book the whole compartment. Then take an attractive companion. Bring a picnic basket. Some champagne. Lock the door. Close the curtains and have a wonderful assignation du jour.
the train underground looks like a subway in the USA.. thats how our subways look
ok seem expensive but but a good train
Oh that’s unfortunate that they swapped the 1st class/ bistro car for this
Trains Station 🚉
