I come here for the in-depth and detail oriented stuff. It is really satisfying, and a good compliment/contrast to the other less detail oriented YT car content creators. Good stuff!
The various ways in which you and others approach rebuilding salvaged cars is incredible. I enjoy the range, but your understated and thoroughly painstaking approach is brilliant. In particular this engine rebuild from scratch is quite awe inspiring. It’s such a beast and you have taken us from nuts and bolts and bits of metal to a fully built (almost) engine. Fabulous.
Well done Dean…your patience is astonishing. Thank goodness you found that metal debris…best to check and maybe vacuum everything carefully before putting it back together again. Good luck! 😨😨🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼😀
A difficult and complicated engine for sure, but so far so good ! And you have your exercise for today, first that gearbox and then pushing the car inside ! But you will see, the car is going to be amazing again !! Nice video !!
Hey Dean, just binge watching the Audi R8 playlist. You need to add *in depth* Pt 1 and Pt 3 to the playlist, confused me when the next episode automatically came up and 6 pistons were in, keep up the great content 👊
Glad you found the metal, rebuilt a bmw 520d timing chain etc, broken bit of plastic managed to get sucked back into engine but caught it in time as in never reved, would have blown turbo again.
Massive appreciation for the in depth detail. I've never even owned a car (I just play Gran Turismo and commute on a bike/mtb for fun) but love them. Gets me really interested in how everything works and how maybe I might like to move towards working in engineering at some point. Keep em coming mate.
Gday Dean, Coming along nicely mate! Good spot of the debris in the “outlet” manifold. Just finished watching you blast through the countryside in the multi coloured Beamer. Looking forward to the R8’s test drive. Stay safe and well, Cheers 👍👍🍻
Glad you spotted that Dean.... Great content as usual. I pulled my intake flaps out and left the arms in place to not flag a fault in ECU. Also did a carbon clean purchasing all the walnut media , hopper and Compressor . very satisfying job tbh...
Great job , that’s some engine , and a minefield of wires and pipes , good job we have photos nowadays , back in my day things were much simpler, we’ll done , enjoy your videos
It maybe worth doing a forklift from the auction - that way you have a rebuild and then something to help lifting and pulling projects around as you normally work alone
Need to be blocking off the egr ports at their closest point to the exhaust and getting the car remapped mapping the egr out. thats where the metal has come from. would have removed that swirl flaps too and again have the map dome to suit. Possibly not too late to do all this?
Tip for pushing a car if you struggle - push on the top of a tyre. You can get twice the leverage (eg for every 2 metres you push the tyre the car moves 1m forward). Riskier is to pull upwards on the spokes. You don't want to get your fingers trapped between the calliper but it's how I get my R8 rolling on a slight incline as I can generate much more lifting vs pushing force. Plenty of space on the rears to get a safe purchase. Wouldn't try it on the fronts or any wheel with tight clearance to a calliper.
Dean, agree with you 100%. Better to be safe than sorry with metal pieces in the inlet manifold. Really appreciate how much detail you've gone into with this engine rebuild & admire your skills in sorting out that crazy wiring loom......not a job for the faint hearted! I was going to ask about a new clutch, but at £2,000 a pop, better to use the old one, especially if hasn't got much wear.👍👍
Good progress on the Engine, blimey that wiring loom looks a nightmare, good job your taking the inlet man off again, great in-depth detail, really enjoyed it, well done Dean.
Yet another great one Dean , especially enjoy the way you explain and show us how and why you do certain things . I suspect many of us wish we possessed your confidence to tackle the work that you do . Keep it up 👍🏽
Great videos, 1 or 2 things a hydraulic lift table and car pusher . Your back will thank you 😂. Oh yeah you needed a clutch alignment tool the disk slipped alittle .good save you would be surprised to see what comes back up intake sometimes when they blow up 😮.
Well dean your patient and you just crack on with your knowledge and don’t give up fantastic content as usual It won’t be long before it’s running and purring like a kitten, or should I say, growling like a lion 👍
Not only the price of clutch but the labour involved to replace it as well. They’re not the kind of cars anymore you can work on your driveway at weekend.
This happened to me on a 2.0t very small bits of metal clogged up the valve and would not seat and caused a misfire, didn't damage the valves or head. Just wouldn't allow the valve to close on 1 cylinder. So make sure you clean that out as pristine as possible.
I've just recently subscribed to your channel but I've also watched a quiet a lot of your videos and I just like to say that you seem to be a man who knows what he's talking about and a very good mechanic and Mike Brewer from wheeler dealers wouldn't go wrong giving you a job as his no1 mechanic
Love the r8, one came past me once on full chat, made me jump out of my skin, it was hell loud, but sounded awesome, its gonna be a fantastic super car when your done, glad you saw the debris, could have been ugly on start up, top stuff, 👍🏻
I love how in depth you go with your rebuild. Can I make a suggestion, when you do the Timelapse clips to mute the audio, it’s kinda distracting. Other than that, top tier videos bro 🤌🏼
Soooo glad you found that chunk of debris Dean! yes it's annoying, but I agree its a good thing in the end as it means there shouldn't be anything going back down into the cylinders! Look forward to the next vid and hopefully that little V8 firing up and purring!
I’d say you missed the clutch alignment tool step when installing the clutch. That would of aligned the splines / centralised the clutch. Also not sure I trust your eyeballing of the intake flap screws. How do you know they are good. Just because they don’t look loose?
Hiya dean been waiting for you to start putting this back together . Really glad you noticed those bit of metal would of been a disaster but you we’ll get there can’t wait for the start up 👍
Mate as you know I love your channel and I do hope for the best on this rebuild, crossed fingers it’s all been contained in the area you can see and that is it 🤞 good luck fella chin up
Great Content Dean. Some frustration's along the way, as usual. But as usual. You will overcome. Might cost you a penny or more as well as time and patience. See you in the next one. 👍👍
Those inlet manifolds were oily dirty anyway, you should’ve cleaned it all before refitting. I know you’re keen to get the engine back in the car, Dean, but you’re rushing it too much. Take your time and get things right first time around. Quicker than having to pull the engine out again.
If you're going to be pressure washing the inlet manifold anyway, I think I'd be throwing a shed load of something caustic/detergent into the inlet manifold tubes to clean out the carbon deposits and anything else that may be lurking around those flaps ....but then I always was a bit on the cautious side around engines
Hey Dean, been binging your content for a few days now especially since I purchased a copart M2 myself, can you tell me what equipment you use for recording your videos please? I’d want to document my repair/build too
That monster clutch...it must weigh 5 times as much as the flywheel. They trimmed the weight of the Flywheel so much to compensate. Probably why it got overheated....🤔😳😳😏🇬🇧
Had to replace a v6 engine on a kv6 mg zt which had chucked a rod while the guy was on his way to Blackpool, fitted the warranty engine, it ran for 2 minutes made a strange noise and cut out. Turns out there was bit's of piston ring in the sealed intake manifold from the original engine, you just never know 😬😬
Once this is finished, I'd love to see a comparison between the V10 and the V8 R8. Also, I'd be interested in which is more fun to drive with the V8 being manual, but the V10 arguably sounding better🤔
Now you have had the inlet on and off again it would be worth sticking a camera down the ports incase anything has found its way in.
Makes sense with the engine valves being pulverised, the debris had to go somewhere, well spotted Dean.
I come here for the in-depth and detail oriented stuff. It is really satisfying, and a good compliment/contrast to the other less detail oriented YT car content creators. Good stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Your videos are becoming more and more informative as well as entertaining. Please keep it up.
Imformative maybe, Entertaining.. not so much.
Good spot on the debris! You've got some patience with that lot. Much more than I could muster.

I love to see your real world struggles of doing stuff your self and on your own .
Been there and done that 😄
Brilliant build, lucky you spotted the inlet manifold 👍
Gday Dean,
Coming along nicely mate! Good spot of the debris in the “outlet” manifold.

Might be wrong but I think it was so hard to mount the gearbox because you didn’t use the tool to align the splines when fitting the clutch?
Great entertainment and keeps giving me the motivation to get through my rear subframe restoration on my 190e. You are truly an inspiration
Amazed that all of the engine’s torque passes through those eight Alan key bolts!
Need to be blocking off the egr ports at their closest point to the exhaust and getting the car remapped mapping the egr out. thats where the metal has come from. would have removed that swirl flaps too and again have the map dome to suit. Possibly not too late to do all this?

Phew! Good job you noticed that debris before you went any further. Great work!
Dean you could be the new Benny Hill on the pushing scene.Who the hell is Benny Hill I hear you say…….. Good work mate and agree about the clutch !
Dean, agree with you 100%. Better to be safe than sorry with metal pieces in the inlet manifold. Good job you spotted that debris. Great to watch you build the Audi
Incredible workmanship and skill. Car will be perfect, looking forward to it. 👍👍👍👍👍
Wiring loom from hell 😢 a great time to find some shrapnel ! Can't wait for the start up .
Good progress on the Engine, blimey that wiring loom looks a nightmare, good job your taking the inlet man off again, great in-depth detail, really enjoyed it, well done Dean.
2 grand clutch wow, lucky enough you found the debris in the inlet soon have it up and running bet you can't wait to drive it
Yet another great one Dean , especially enjoy the way you explain and show us how and why you do certain things . I suspect many of us wish we possessed your confidence to tackle the work that you do . Keep it up 👍🏽

good catch --- need to clean that intake box out well. As you said, good job you noticed.
Well dean your patient and you just crack on with your knowledge and don’t give up fantastic content as usual It won’t be long before it’s running and purring like a kitten, or should I say, growling like a lion 👍
2 grand for a clutch?!!! Whatever happened to the good ol' days of nipping into your local motor factors and being shafted £150 for a Borg & Beck?
I still buy Borg and Beck pads and discs for my van 😂
Not only the price of clutch but the labour involved to replace it as well. They’re not the kind of cars anymore you can work on your driveway at weekend.
Did u see the size of it tho 😮 piece of kit!!
Not exactly a Ford escort though is it
SUPERIOR GERMAN ENGINEERING!! Lol

Thankyou buddy appreciate it 🙌🏼
Can’t wait for the start…. Turned my notifications on ready for it, great videos as usual 👌
Awesome! Thank you!
Love the r8, one came past me once on full chat, made me jump out of my skin, it was hell loud, but sounded awesome, its gonna be a fantastic super car when your done, glad you saw the debris, could have been ugly on start up, top stuff, 👍🏻
Good ole mum ❤👏👏
I love how in depth you go with your rebuild. Can I make a suggestion, when you do the Timelapse clips to mute the audio, it’s kinda distracting. Other than that, top tier videos bro 🤌🏼
Thanks for the tip
Mate, hats off, massive job! From an VW tech, love the Chanel 👌🏻
Much appreciated!
Looking forward to the new podcast! my thoughts for this challenge would have been a high mileage 125i
Really excited to see this one turn over!!
Soooo glad you found that chunk of debris Dean! yes it's annoying, but I agree its a good thing in the end as it means there shouldn't be anything going back down into the cylinders! Look forward to the next vid and hopefully that little V8 firing up and purring!

Hiya dean been waiting for you to start putting this back together . Really glad you noticed those bit of metal would of been a disaster but you we’ll get there can’t wait for the start up 👍
Can’t you use a magnet to get all those bits out of the inlet rather than jet washing?
Great video series. Love the detail with the time lapse 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
thankyou Dean this is an amazing upload..👍👍
Love your video's more than other channels, as you speak our language!
Mate as you know I love your channel and I do hope for the best on this rebuild, crossed fingers it’s all been contained in the area you can see and that is it 🤞 good luck fella chin up
Best to be safe than sorry enjoying very much ,I think it’s a lovely looking car all wanted one !great video mate !
Thanks 👍
Were any of those bolts torqued to spec?
Great Content Dean. Some frustration's along the way, as usual. But as usual. You will overcome. Might cost you a penny or more as well as time and patience. See you in the next one. 👍👍
Shout out to your mum's for helping out with the gearbox alignment.
10/10 this series 🏎💥
Great job so far - looking forward to engine start
You and me both!
Really enjoying this but jeeeeez I’d be losing my sh@t by now, so you’ve got my respect for the degree of patience as well as knowledge
Lucky your Mum was still there to help before flying off to assist Tavarish! 🤣😂
I'm surprised that little table lasted as long as it did with all that weight on it lol.
Some nice company should send you some nice work benches.
The progress of this engine rebuild has been amazing, including the setbacks! Excited to see more!
I hope you torqued the flywheel bolts up?
Yep
Going so well good job you saw that Dean 😩
Woop! Back on the R8!
Those inlet manifolds were oily dirty anyway, you should’ve cleaned it all before refitting. I know you’re keen to get the engine back in the car, Dean, but you’re rushing it too much. Take your time and get things right first time around. Quicker than having to pull the engine out again.
Great video dean, good to see your on the ball with that debris 😅
It’s going great pal from where I’m viewing, love the vids, what’s happening with the Porsche ?? Not that there’s anything wrong with an R8 !?! 👍👍👍
Enjoying this. Cheers.
Great work as qlways Dean! But the time lapse getting the r8 in the unit reminded me of benny hill 😂😂
🤭
You got this bro. Enjoying this one
Do you buy the cars from copart and are they categorized cars, how do you find the ones with engine damage and no body damage
look for mechanical damage
If you're going to be pressure washing the inlet manifold anyway, I think I'd be throwing a shed load of something caustic/detergent into the inlet manifold tubes to clean out the carbon deposits and anything else that may be lurking around those flaps ....but then I always was a bit on the cautious side around engines
Better safe than sorry, keep up the amazing work!
Great video as usual.
Good job you noticed that, be safe, not sorry, great video
Hey Dean, been binging your content for a few days now especially since I purchased a copart M2 myself, can you tell me what equipment you use for recording your videos please? I’d want to document my repair/build too
Nice one...loving your videos. Its all coming along. Kudos.
Pretty new to the channel but really liking the content 👍 I am surprised you didn't "upgrade" the cats while it's out
That monster clutch...it must weigh 5 times as much as the flywheel. They trimmed the weight of the Flywheel so much to compensate. Probably why it got overheated....🤔😳😳😏🇬🇧
Is it worth dropping a camera into the cylinders just to make sure nothing dropped in now
Had to replace a v6 engine on a kv6 mg zt which had chucked a rod while the guy was on his way to Blackpool, fitted the warranty engine, it ran for 2 minutes made a strange noise and cut out. No centering tool needed to install the clutch ?
No bud, the clutch sits in position within the clutch pack. So just bolt on
Yeah Dean Change That Coolant Hose Under The Inlet Manifold
Very nice keep it up
You should install a winch behind the ramp for pulling cars easily
Great vid brilliant progress however better safe than sorry no use rushing at this point 😊
Very true!
Great video dean 👍🏻😁
Thanks 👍
No thread lock on the flywheel bolts ?
Yeah I did
Nice one once again Dean
Thanks again!
My pleasure Dean
You need a bloody good parts washer, and then a process of checking before installing kit.....
I tried washing them, but its stained.
@@SavingSalvage Good to know, keep up the videos, I do enjoy them.
Good job you did see the bits 👍
Could’ve been expensive 🙈🙈 a good spot 🧐👍👍
Once this is finished, I'd love to see a comparison between the V10 and the V8 R8. Also, I'd be interested in which is more fun to drive with the V8 being manual, but the V10 arguably sounding better🤔
So nice ! Great !
Hello yes you are making good progress! 👍
Wow ffs that was lucky finding that contamination, looks like it happened when it was last worked on,
Thank God for your mom!
dont forget new o rings on the coolant pipes, that would suck if they leaked!
