  • Yale Law's Amy Chua says that Trump came to power, in part, because of the rise of a "market-dominant minority" in the U.S., "coastal elites," which many Americans see as a threat to their way of life.

A lot of interesting thoughts. Do you still think that the old terms of Liberal and Conservative apply? This discussion sounds more app to me.

She says she could have predicted Trump winning if she had looked at the situation in 2016 as a "upset majority voting against minority elites" in developed countries.
I have a problem with that comparison.. simply because developed countries tend to have representative democracies... whereas USA has a mish mash of electoral college and gerrymandering that leads to Republicans wining the majority of the Senate even though they receive the minority of the votes, they win majority of Congress with less votes than Democrats and also win the presidency while losing the popular vote.
If USA was a representative democracy, Republicans would never win as they are now.. they would have to change.. they would have to appeal to the masses rather than upset racists.
This would mean that American people would actually get politicians that enact policies favoured by Americans.
Currently both parties enact policies that please their donors rather than the majority of Americans.. so USA is much more of an Oligarchy than a Democracy.
