    I used to make beats on a mpc 1000 and a triton LE (and other keyboards) and I would use the mpc seq (tracks) for both internal and keyboard sounds, then when finished I wld slave the mpc to pro tools and track the beat out, just rec each loop track by track into protools while they were synced. I would also mix in midi software instruments and live instruments. Now a days I'm trying to make the switch to a MIDI Controller and logic and for the last 2 years have been really liking it!

      How can I use the same usb interface from this video to have Logic trigger my mpc 1000 to start playing? I’m trying to track out my beats. Thanks

    • @Juliano_DJOL
      @Juliano_DJOL 2 года назад

      @@djskor hook up midi in/out cables or USB and then run a 1/4" out of mpc to interface. Go to mpc program _ midi _ set mpc to slave - then set logic to master so that logic controls playback of logic and mpc. Then mute all but one track at a time in mpc and hit rec in logic and rec your tracks/loops one at a time into tracks in logic. If u need more just search Track out beats from mpc to logic.

    Sorry but this makes one MAJOR oversight: when recording the audio back you don’t set the input of the new track to the input channels from the interface because unless you will record with latency. The extremely instrument plug-in has the auto latency detection but that’s for round trip and doesn’t effect the interface inputs (which you want it to)
    So unless there’s an easier way what I do it just create an aux, send from the external instrument (midi) track to that in prefacer then create the audio track I want to print to and set its input as that aux this way the audio is perfectly synced up
    (though it may have been addressed in a later version I’m like one year behind with logic updates)

      Thank you Adam S - this is exactly what I needed to learn. Solution without manual waves alignment! Logic can send external instrument sound to aux and then also record to a new audio track from that aux in real time with no delay.

Did you used to own these and just sold or got rid of them? I cld def see you going deep on a triton studio or roland phantom back in the day! Both of which do just about everything I do in logic now a days, minus a screen, so wouldn't say it was better or anything.

    For those who haven't banged their head when using external synths with Logic, the reason this feature is cool is because...
    It used to be when recording external midi instruments (before this feature), you'd want to send the synth's audio outputs to an aux track, output that to a bus, and have an audio track get its input from the bus.
    The reason for that was Logic would apply audio latency compensation if you just recorded your synth directly into an audio track. Because there was no delay on the midi being sent, after the audio compensation Logic made, your hardware synth's audio would end up playing early.
    By recording into an aux track and outputting to a bus, Logic would not apply that latency compensation and your audio would appear as it should (which will probably be a single millisecond delay up to 20 depending on the Midi response of your external instrument).
    This was a serious pain-in-the-ass to figure out, was not at all intuitive, and tripped up a lot of people ( copy/paste from user "carbon" on gear space)

    Here is a challenge for you. My external instrument is a Roland TD-11 electronic drum kit. It connects to Logic via USB cable and transmits and receives data. I play the drums and hear its module sounds (amazing acoustic sounds) and Logic records all midi notes to one track. I plat the one track in Logic and I hear the drums again because the midi notes in Logic trigger the sounds on the drum's brain. I arm an audio track in Logic and record the entire drums' sound to audio just like you did.
    The challenge is how do I record the sound of each drum to its own audio track in Logic? I want the kick on one track, the snare on its own track, the toms on another track, you get the idea, so I can EQ/Add effects to each drum separately. The drum brain only has one MIDI out, one USB (IN/OUT) and L/R 1/4 " outs.

    3 minutes in and I’m really confused. I’m trying to utilize an old Yamaha with my apogee duet. I bought the same exact cable system do you have in your hands with a mini In-N-Out 5 pin, with usb. Am I supposed to plug both 5 pin in and out into the old Yamaha, and the usb into the Apogee duet midi input (usb)? Or directly into the Mac? You seem to have said both without explaining. Also the old Yamaha psr500 only has one audio out, 1/4 inch so do I need a dongle to connect that to the apogee duets channel 1 and 2 audio in? And if so that would mean I need to have two tracks panned left and right?

      Yeah, that part was really confusing. It seems like he's doing (educated) guess work to line up the audio track with the midi regions above to make sure it's in time. I agree though, there really should be a way to record on both tracks with the same source. I would rather just keep using software instruments to make sure I could keep everything in time or just have the option to change the way that's it's quantized than get stuck fine-tuning things every time I had an idea.

    Strange that the Mute button does not actually mute the midi going to the external instrument like it did in this video. Anyone know how to find the notes of an external drum machine?
    I’ve recorded into Logic using ‘External MIDI Inst.’, and then opened up the Piano Roll for that channel.. The notes on the keyboard light up as each drum sounds but they don’t seem to correspond to the actual pitch of the drums.. As I change the pitch on the drum machine, the keys being triggered on the piano roll don’t change with the change of pitch on DM. This happens even before I record; the notes on piano roll get triggered but don’t correspond to DM changes. Anyone know how to link them? Would be nice to know notes of drums/perc, to tune other instruments to!

    • @JeffyG
      @JeffyG 2 года назад

      You need the manual for your external drum machine. There should be a section or appendix with the midi implementation. Then create a midi instrument within Logic | Window | Open MIDI Environment. Choose the Midi Inst layer and add a new Multi Instrument. Name it the same as your Drum Machine. Here you can control the bank and patch names. Either by typing in the names, or importing the patch names from a CVS or spreadsheet. Make this assignable and you'll be able to change the drum from the tracks within the main Logic arrange view. If this sounds a little complicated, it does take some work, but once it's setup you'll have full control of your drum machine from within Logic.

    Why cant you daisy chain multiple synths via midi?

    • @JeffyG
      @JeffyG 2 года назад

      You can, but each synth needs to be configured for specific midi channels, else they'll all play at the same time. Ex. Synth 1 - Midi Channel 1, Synth 2 - Midi Channel 2, etc. Most synths from 1995 onward accept all midi channels 1 - 16 and support multiple 'parts' That's where multi-timbral comes from. If you record midi on a logic track and send it to an external synth, and each of those synths accepts midi on Chl 1, they'll all play the same midi. That's what you're trying to prevent, if you want different synths to play different parts. I have an eMagic mt4 USB midi multi-port device with 4 different midi outs. In this way, I can send midi 1 - 16 to 4 different synths without concern.

    Hi Chris, thank you so much for this (and indeed all your wonderful succinct videos). I was hoping you'd get into addressing Multitimbral synths and Modules. I'm in the middle of this at the moment. I have a JV1080, 2 x Korg O1 (All 16 part Multitimbral) and a Novation Supernova(8 Part).....and a Motu 128. I would like to record Multitimbrally.This was the way we used to arrange back in the 90's when computer audio was only possible if you could afford the then revolutionary 'ProTools'. It used to be very easy in Cubase which I used to use about 15 years ago to assign different sounds to different Midi channels. .Apparently in Logic you have to go into the (dreaded) 'Environment and set up profiles for each of your synths. I'm waiting 'til I have a a long quiet weekend to do that, but would love it if you could do a video explaining how to do this in the environment.

    • @PylonRecordsdotcom

      I switched from Cubase to Logic recently because Cubase does not have any USB/MIDI driver support for fMidi interfaces, it just uses the stand class compliant driver that is on Mac OS, however Logic does have a driver for Emagic Unitor 8 that works on Intel Macs, so I purchased couple of Unitor 8 for cheap and now I am sequencing all the external synths and drum machines in Midi , like we did in the 90s, the timing is tight because in Logic you have automatic Midi Delay Offset,which it calculates on each midi track, this is heaven sent, as in Cubase it is not automatic and you have to spend hours to get it to be tight. None of the Midi interfaces that have drivers provide tight timing, have spent the whole year trying out different ones. MOTU is not what it used to be in the 90s, but its driver works super tight with Digital Performer. In order for you to set up the way you want, you would create an several external midi tracks for say JV 1080 and put each track on different channel and within your JV you assign a midi channel for each sound you are using within the JV, in Multimode.
      Do the same with other external instruments and get couple of bars cycling and welcome back the 90s, once you happy you then print the files to audio simultaneously or track by track depending how many ins and outs you have on your audio interface, you can either monitor from a small mixing desk or through your audio interface software which should have zero latency.
      Hope that helps.

      You could change the output midi channel from the inspector in Logic on the left (when you've selected the midi track). For example, if your external synth is receiving on Midi Ch 1, change the Logic midi output to midi channel 2. Then no midi is sent to your external synth. Another source for audio loops could be your Unitor 8. You might be hearing your synth through the audio interface monitoring, as well as Logic's software monitoring. If you're not sure how to control the Unitor 8 monitoring, turn off the Logic software monitoring. From the Logic menu, choose Logic | Settings | Audio | General tab - see check box for Software monitoring.

    A bunch of issues here that NO ONE will address.. first one is how to setup your synth for logic to recognize midi.. iv tried using midi studio on my Mac to create a new instrument.. but what boxes do we check ? IE.. transmits .. receives… features.. when I chose the Chanel my synth is set to it actually takes that Chanel out of logic when creating a midi track. Secondly iv been told many times my M audio air 192/14’s midi in and out will support daisy chained synths. Assigning each synths Chanel to their own number.. and setting the synth to be able to have “thru midi” so that each Chanel in logic will trigger the assigned synth.. if this is incorrect . If i absolutely need to buy a midi interface I need to know. Even with one single synth I cannot get logic or my mac to recognize my hardware synths midi.. audio no problem.. which actually brings me to my third problem. How do you stop your interface from producing sound from your synth as well as logic’s new audio Chanel from producing sound? This double sound is not accurate and when I turn “local off “ on my synth I can’t hear any sound what so ever.

      Good point. These are all slightly complex issues with solutions, too long to address in a YT comment. I have a video that might get you started, or you can contact me from my YT channel ruclips.net/video/nbJDVFL7Lwg/видео.html

      Chris has another video on that subject. The Novation Launchkey MK3 series is very good wth Logic, as well as the NI Kontrol M32.

    Logic doesn't seem to understand midi channels. I have an OB6 and a TR8s and it doesn't matter what I do they just play all the notes on each channel. I've tried 'Auto demix by channel' I've tried turning off the tr8s as a midi input. Its crazy.

    You can't tell me that we have to move the audio we recorded manually, that would make Logic the absolute worst DAW out there...What if I record pads? where's the transient in that? what if I have multiple drum machines and synths playing complex grooves, every millisecond counts. Can't be true, there has to be a way.

    Ventura does not have those interfaces so if you have Ventura this is obsolete. They've removed the items you are using to configure an external midi device in Ventura or they have moved it elsewhere so this video is useless unless you have the version this guy does & he hasn't said which version he's using.

      Well, you can obviously play your external synth and record it directly with logic pro. But in this case you will have only an audio track. This way makes possible to record the audio and midi both

    There is absolutely no video on RUclips that demos how to install multi pad drum machines. I'm talking about drum machines like the DTX Multi 12. Zero. No videos. Also, there are no videos on how to map from Addictive Drums to multi drum pads. None.

    Dang, you jibber jabber too much about unnecessary information. what value is it to the viewer where you got your synth and the mundane information you had to buy a interface. So wasteful of the viewers time.
