My dad is an ISTP, he's not interested in doting on his family or being sappy. However he's spent his entire life serving us and spoiling us so that we never knew any hardship

Not an ISTP then, typing is an extremely useful tool for dealing with people from a logical perspective. Relationships can be difficult and it's like a cheat code to reading the minds of others based on their personality types, which are incredibly easy to figure out if you know them at all.
