He was always willing to fight anyone, on any team, including his own. Once, while coaching (Which was his after hockey career), he had so alienated his team that they began to mouth off to him in the dressing room, he warned the players that he wasn't going to allow that sort of thing and when one of the players "Got in his face" (As we would say today), the aging Lalonde took the young man down with one mighty punch, turned to his players and asked "Anyone else?" The thing about Shore that is the most interesting is his stories as Owner-GM-Coach of the Springfield Indians. Later he bought a figure skating team, and "tortured ice dancers" according to Don Cherry
It is also said that, 1948, when he was gm for the Omaha team and the coach was Joe Mcgrath, he sent him a guy who was a terrible masturbator. Couldn't control himself. He would get deliberate penalties so he could get into the penalty box all by himself, and damned if he wouldn't, you know...

I forgot about Dino. I know I hated him. I'm surprised that Darius Kasparaitis isn't on the list or even Crosby. Crosby is a real dirty player. Always hacking players behind the play and is always bitching about being touched. I never knew how bad it really was until I went to a game. He's so bad
Completely agree with you. Billy was a great net minder but he didn’t hesitate to hack and wack. I remember he used to wear a rabbit foot chain around his neck for good luck. During the 1982 Final against the Canucks Tiger Williams ripped it off and threw it in the stands. I think I should make a part two to this list as their are so many players that have earned it.I don’t think some were dirty but reacted violently to the way they were treated on the ice and lashed out in frustration and rage, Maurice Richard comes to mind. You have to be tough to play pro hockey. There’s an awful lot of players that have have done dirty things on the ice to gain a competitive edge. Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Eddie Shack, Bobby Clarke.
During the Oilers Dynasty of the '80's, we saw both Billy Smith & Ron Hextall, both in a pair of back-to-back Stanley Cup finals against Edmonton. Having a season ticket, I was at the game when Edmonton dethroned the Islanders, on May 19, 1984. Glenn "Kamikaze" Anderson charging the net with no regard for himself or the goalie, was not for the faint of heart. This was before the magnetic moorings, of the early '90's. Plenty of turbulence at the Woodchoppers Ball‼️
The reason Hextall attacked Chelios was for Chelios elbowing Brian Propp in the head & sending him to the hospital & ending his season. Yes Hextall was dirty at times but there was usually a reason when he went bananas. Also Hextaĺl learned his "stick craft" from Billy Smith who always kept his crease clear.
@@humankirk9196 I'd say he was hated. He was known to attempt to injure players. That was common in the day, but not as much for goalies. Also, Hextall had his entire fighting roster to protect him, not that he really needed it, but no team would take any liberties on him. He could do what he wanted to almost any player on the other team. I can not stress enough what kind of a two handed chop a goalie needed to do back in the day to get anything more than a two minute minor.
I worked in East Hampton Long island for a while, and it was reported that Mr Avery threw a rock at a passing car for no reason at all? The world doesnt need this guy
I still despise Claude Lemieux. And the "little ball of hate" is Pat Verbeck. And your top most hated players is the correct one. There is no excuse for Sean Avery's style (if you can call it that) of play. He was a coward, a bully, a pest, and a rude human being-to put it nicely.
I don't think Tiger Williams or Tie Domi should get mentioned. They never picked on players who were not fighters, they were not that big so only fought guys who were bigger and were tough themselves and I don't think they ever tried to intentionally injure. Matt Cooke should get mentioned and Matthew Barnaby
Bullshit on Tiger Williams. He ran Stan Mikita in to the boards from behind when Stan was old, hurt Stan's back to the point where he had to retire. Fuck Tiger!
@@jim7297 , there is another one. Before Mikita's moment when he concluded that he could not win games in the penalty box, he was quite the instigator.
I guess you don't remember what Larry Robinson did to Schultz on a Saturday afternoon game, i believe it was in1976, he brought him down to earth, Schultz was never the same after that beating.
Never got to see that one, but I would have loved too. I know about it. Nobody with any sense ever bothered Larry Robinson. He commanded respect and got it.
It was a Sunday afternoon game, Feb. 17/74. Schultz sucker punched John Van Boxmeer, knocking him out and to the ice. Robinson avenged that by giving Schultz a thrashing.
Yes he is more than deserving. He is also Hall of Fame worthy just on his coaching record, but because of his nasty reputation he will probably never be admitted.
I would put people who are consistently over the line and do so intentionally (Pronger) over players who are infamous for a particular incident, but don’t stand out otherwise.
Shore immediately got his when Leaf tough guy Red Horner removed one glove and promptly knocked him out. I still remember when Schultz was taken apart by Clark Gillies and eventually Larry Robinson, two guys only stupid players bothered.
I really enjoyed seeing the "Original Rat" referenced. I thought of him immediately the first time I saw Marchand play. I'm sure Kenny thanked God every day for Paul Holmgren.
Esa Tikkanen started more fights by other players than anyone in league history. He was by far the most hated by other teams. I remember multiple times when other players would chase him around the ice because of his treatment of their stars.
There was a VERY good reason for Hextall to jump Chelios. Reason being, the charging style elbow to the side of Brian Propp’s head. An elbow so cheap, that a bolt from Propp’s helmet went through his skull and touched his brain. Hexy didn’t even get his money’s worth.
@@tedtalkshockey1966 you can easily get bias towards a player because he did something to your favorite team and forget that other players are hated by almost everyone. @@tedtalkshockey1966 110% agree, Valeri Kharlamov may not be a name familiar to many now, but he was absolutely brilliant on the old Soviet teams back in the day and what Clarke did, breaking his ankle, should have been a capital offense.

I agree that Clarke could have easily made the list - he was among the dirtiest players of his era. The only reason one had to fear Schultz was he would jump someone in a split-second if their back was turned.
McSorley wasn’t hated he made a big mistake that changed both his life and Brashear’s too but he wasn’t a dirty player or hated. Seemed liked by everyone. He was a role player

He was without question the dirtiest player I've seen, even going back to his junior days with the Toronto Marlies. He was never afraid to use the stick to spear, hack or cut your face; or run you from behind and injure you.. He had psychological problems that likely stemmed from an incident when he was 12 years old, according to one of his aunts.
@@jamesanthony5681 There was a story from one of his Birmingham teammates. Before a game against the Whalers, Durbano was sharpening the blade of his stick. The teammate asked what he was doing & he said that he was going "after the old man." The team had to beg him not to cut Gordie Howe because they were sure the whole team would be murdered before they could get out of town. To quote Rick James, "Cocaine is a helluva drug." His brother mentioned an incident when they were little that probably didn't help. I imagine it's the same one his aunt referenced. Plus his dad was a hot head. He was arrested after a junior game for waiting to run over refs with his car after a game. The guy definitely had some demons.
Brad Marchand was on a ferry boat to Newfoundland before the start of this past season when he met my nieces neighbours. They told them about my nieces daughter who was a huge Bruins fan and whose birthday was coming up.He called her and wished her the best birthday ever.On the ice he may be a prick, but off the ice he seems like a great guy to me.
Another person that was widely disliked during his tenure in the league was Larry Zeidel played from 1951-1969. Had multiple suspension for violence with the stick and had one of the most notorious stick fights in nhl history.
I played for 20 years, great sport, when I wasn't on the ice we'd play street hockey, in my day we didn't wear masks or shields, I think it's kinda funny when they fight wearing face shields. It's one of the most exciting games to play, constant action while your on the ice. Cheap shots are just part of the game, but some are a little too cheap.

Good one. After Maurice Richard retired, for several seasons, the Canadiens forwards were pushed around quite a bit. When Ferguson came along, things changed. And the results came immediately. The Habs won the Stanley Cup four out of five seasons in the mid-and-late 1960s. Only Toronto's 1967 Cup win interrupted the streak.
Once in the playoffs Ferguson beat up Bobby Hull. After the game was over he was in the parking lot ready to drive away. A woman came up to him with a smile and thanked him for putting her husband in his place. He said to a teammate "Who was that".. The teammate said "That was Joanne Hull". Ferguson wondered what kind of a marriage they had when he beats up a hockey player and his wife thanked him for it.
Tom WIlson belongs on there, just on principle. So does Chara, but that’s my own gripe. I’ve got a few players that I would have added to this list, but it would have extended the list from a “top 10” to a “top 20”, very easily.
Hit very body with his stick and never fought my favorite moment with boobie yes boobie was when he whacked Phil Esposito with his stick and Esposito turned around and whacked the sissy
Agreed. I still, remember Clarke whacking Valeri Kharlamov's ankle, breaking it, in a Flyers vs. Soviet Union game many years past. Kharlamov was one hell of a talented player, the pity was he was dropped from the Soviet Olympic team after the 1980 "Miracle." He's gone but not forgotten.
I called three of them: Marchand, Lemieux and Avery. I can’t believe Avery ever got a job as a sportscaster and I’m not a Red Wings fan, but I still enjoy watching that 1997 season finale game where Lemieux got his ass handed to him by McCarty and all the fights that followed in their OT win against Colorado. Others you can have are Nolan, Roenick, and Bertuzzi.
tired of unions shielding their people from real consiquences, if you injure a player that is determined to be on purpose or extreamley dangerous play then you miss as many games as them.
What about Milan Lucic? That man could be utterly psychotic! He is a great player but his playing style also represents his aggressive physical nature. He makes no reservations or apologies for harming or punishing opposing players
@Gary Blanchard Fair point. Perhaps I should have said WAS great. Not quite the caliber of Bergeron or Marchand were (and still are) but his playing style alone, regardless of his aggressive nature, was a complement to the entire Bruins championship team dynamic. At this stage, he still has plenty fuel in the tank (which Calgary is in no position to dismiss) but really: Is anyone ever what they used to be?
Yeah ATER the game was over he tells Dale Weise that he was going to kill him. I hate the legal stuff, but he should have been charged with uttering threats
Wow you picked the one instance where Corey Perry was innocent as your first picture of him. That picture makes it look like he intentionally kneed Tavares in the face. When it was a legitimate incident. I hate Perry as much as the next guy, but that was the one time he was innocent
This is a solid list. Although there could be some arguments around the edges, all mentioned were "worthy". Just one gray area IMHO. ''Hated' for dirty play and/or disgusting demeaner, or just because other teams hated playing a tough guy who might also outplay them (like Messier)? Expected to see Kaspar the Unfriendly Ghost in the honorable mentions.
DRAPER: Gus Adams suffered a similar injury when Craig Berube ran him face first into the boards. Gus was out for quite a while. I rank Samuelsson as even dirtier than Marty Mack
No Bobby Clarke?????? He was dirty because he had Schultz by his side. But Clarke got stupid one night in Chicago and would only fight Mikita if Mikita took off his helmet. Mikita took off the helmet and beat the crap out of Clarke.
As a Boston Bruins fan, I'm not sure Eddie Shore was hated. He was one of the early greats of the game. The Hanson Brothers loved his brand of "old time hockey". One guy we really hated was Matt Cooke. His intentional headshot basically ended Marc Savard's career. And we love Marchand... most of the time.
Billy Smith was A FAR MORE HATED GOALIE than Ron Hextall ever was. Smith was the original hack'n slash goalie and was universally hated everywhere in the NHL, except New York. You got that one wrong. Hextall was respected as a great goalie by many in the NHL and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, even though he lost the finals to the Wayne Gretzky-led Edmonton Oilers. He was one of the geatest and respected goalie's of his era.
Chelios jumped into the air and elbowed Brian Propp against the glass in game 1 and knocked Propp unconscious and Hextall attacked Chelios in game 6 as retribution. Hextall did not play in game 1 because of an injury.

The thing about Shore that is the most interesting is his stories as Owner-GM-Coach of the Springfield Indians. Later he bought a figure skating team, and "tortured ice dancers" according to Don Cherry
LOL, Shore was one of a kind.

Hextall did that to chelios because of what chelios did to Brian propp in game. 1
Yup, Chelios had it coming.
It's good that you at least mentioned Battlin' Billy Smith in passing; until Hextall came along, he was the most hated goalie in the game.
@@tedtalkshockey1966 Bobby Clarke would top a "Should have been more hated" list.
How is Matt Cooke not on this list? Samuelsson should have been retired by the league after the Neely incident
Until that Luongo fella came along
The reason Hextall attacked Chelios was for Chelios elbowing Brian Propp in the head & sending him to the hospital & ending his season. Yes Hextall was dirty at times but there was usually a reason when he went bananas. Also Hextaĺl learned his "stick craft" from Billy Smith who always kept his crease clear.
This is true.
And I wouldn’t say Hextall was hated. He was intense but not hated
@@humankirk9196 I'd say he was hated. He was known to attempt to injure players. That was common in the day, but not as much for goalies.
In the ‘75 playoffs Clark Gillies wrecked Shultz in a fight. That night, “The Hammer” was “The Nail”
Dale Hunter easily should've rated on the top ten for the hit on Pierre Turgeon during the '93 playoffs.
Yes he is more than deserving. He is also Hall of Fame worthy just on his coaching record, but because of his nasty reputation he will probably never be admitted.

For that hit and the whole of this chicken sh**''s career.
I would put people who are consistently over the line and do so intentionally (Pronger) over players who are infamous for a particular incident, but don’t stand out otherwise.

Avery, C. Lemmieux and Marchand should be on the list in all ways.

But you lose points for not having someone that would be in most top 5's...Matthew Barnaby. That grin. That annoying love he has for being a dick...that was 100% by choice.
1 more thing...Ron Hextall was really misunderstood and we shouldn't punish a man for his over the top passion...😏
Yes, Barney was irritating, but he stood in and fought anyone.
Barnaby was a twit, but I wish we'd have had him in Vancouver. he would drop the gloves.. although not overly tough
You forgot Todd Bertuzzi, Doug Harvey, Billy Smith, Essa Tikkanen, the Plager brothers, etc.
I'll consider them in part two, all very worthy.
And Fernie Flaman who was described as absolute murder to play against
Yes Doug Harvey speared Red Sullivan yet not before Harvey warned Sullivan to not kick the back of his skates while in the corner making it easy for Harvey to fall on the back of his head long before the helmet era.
Most hated yes Avery but dirtiest by far is Mark Messier
Agreed. I remember how he cheap shotted Bob Gainey when he first entered the league.
@@tedtalkshockey1966 Matt Cooke before Messier in my opinion. What about Simon?
And a beloved player, Bobby Clarke, was a dirty sonofabitch. He deliberately broke a player's ankle in the '72 Summit Series. But people forget becasue he was a Russian- Valerie Kharlamov. And Clarke would instigate a lot of NHL fights he never took a swing in. Great vid BTW
@@bbb462cid Thank You. Totally agree about Clarke as well as the others. Never forget how Clarke disrespected Roger Nielson after getting cancer.
@@tedtalkshockey1966 agree 100%
Mess & Andy were really nasty, but Mark could back it up...there were dirtier players. They were one in a long line of NHL greats who used the force as a means of making room for themselves, sending a message of intimidation. It was hockey, not today's brand of 3 Ringette Circus.
Ulfie was dirty filthy nasty in every aspect of the game.
😂 Nobody was more hated than him during his era.
Except for Avery, Samuelson and Perry, you don’t have a bad list. Those three weren’t famous enough to be hated throughout the country. I saw the end of the six team league and the golden age of hockey with Richard, Hull, Gretzky, Howe etc. and cherished every game. It is not the same game anymore.
Ulf Danielson was hated by everyone.
