Notable for two reasons. One of the rare public 'performances' by XTC since Andy's withdrawal to the studio and two, a rare sighting of Andy's attempt to model a chinstrap beard. (I'm sure it's not just duff studio lighting!)

the guitar work on this album was 20 years ahead of it's time. Every pop punk and alt rock band in the 2000's wish they wrote parts like these

Song was nominated for an Ivor Novello Award, and has been described as 'soaringly melodic'. Few pop writers could match Andy Partridge. Maybe Lennon and McCartney.

It must be dispiriting when the record company tells you that the TV show they've got you on to promote the new single is Pebble Mill, the pensioners' favourite! To be fair, the show did quite a good job, I assume the b&w sections were pre-recorded as Andy vanishes from the main stage 😀

It's a bit Spinal Tap, isn't it? Pebble Mill could be a lot worse than this, they tried, bless 'em.

Wonder if this was the 1st time in about 10 years A P and the band performed live?

Not true, they played King of the day on Letterman show before that. Also they had a small "tour" in USA, when they played acoustic stuff on radio stations.

I know it's the typical British television thing but I find the practice of a band miming a song on a TV show to be completely bizarre

@@dss2856 It's not a music show though, they've got no facilities and engineers for musicians to come along and sound check etc. It's turn up, mime the song and go home, and hope a few people watching the performance liked it and will buy the record

I wonder who's pretending to play drums.

Miming on drums is Ian Gregory - Dave Gregory’s brother. He played on the Dukes of Stratosphear album under the pseudonym of ‘E.I.E.I. Owen’
