Andy Partridge explains how a Halloween jack-o-lantern that he decided to keep around after the holiday by impaling it on a fencepost near his recording studio fired up his creative juices. “Yeah, so I’d see the rotting head, and I started to think, ‘What did he do to deserve to be executed - to be put on a spike on Traitor’s Gate here? He did nothing wrong. He was kind of perfect.’” “And then I thought, ‘Hmmm, what would happen if there was somebody on Earth who was kind of perfect?’ I just started to extrapolate on that idea, and really mess around with it in a kind of Dylanesque way. I thought, ‘Why don’t I come up with ‘The Ballad of’ - the ballad of somebody who’s pretty much perfect?’ And the more I thought about it, the more I thought, ‘God, they’d make so many enemies!’ You know, if they really encouraged humanity and humaneness and love and sharing and giving, they would really piss off so many people in power, that those people in power would do everything they could to stop them, including killing them!” While Bob Dylan may have been an inspiration to Partridge when writing, he and his band played the song more as an energetic romp than a balladic dirge, with a recording featuring booming drums, jangly guitar, and frisky harmonica. The tale begins with Peter coming to town and immediately making a difference by “spreading wisdom and cash around.” He also makes sure that his largesse goes to the right place, unlike, Partridge implies, certain religious institutions: “Fed the starving and housed the poor/Showed the Vatican what gold’s for.” Peter’s speeches lure the masses from their places of worship (“Emptied churches and shopping malls”) for a simple reason that’s almost counterintuitive in today’s cynical society: “Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth.” Naturally this brings discomfort to those who have already achieved power, but their efforts to damage his reputation fail miserably: “Plots and sex scandals failed outright/Peter merely said, ‘Any kind of love is all all right.” But these “enemies” “who would keep us on our knees” are not to be denied, as the final verse sadly makes clear. Peter ends up crucified, but, as Partridge’s final lines suggest, his impact reverberates throughout the populace: “He died grinning on live TV/Hanging there he looked a lot like you and an awful lot like me.” Although the song’s video makes explicit visual references to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Partridge has insisted in various interviews that the lyrics are more fable than fact. What’s certain is that XTC’s “The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead” implies that unbridled honesty in front of the masses is a one-way ticket to martyrdom....
If you are trying to equate the congenital liar Donald Trump with Peter Pumpkinhead, you have: a) clearly missed the message of the song; and b) have no idea what the meaning of "truth" is.

Muito som de 1992. Hoje eu com 41 anos só relembrando a boa música que nunca fica ruim. 22/11/19.
While Bob Dylan may have been an inspiration to Partridge when writing, he and his band played the song more as an energetic romp than a balladic dirge, with a recording featuring booming drums, jangly guitar, and frisky harmonica. The tale begins with Peter coming to town and immediately making a difference by “spreading wisdom and cash around.” He also makes sure that his largesse goes to the right place, unlike, Partridge implies, certain religious institutions: “Fed the starving and housed the poor/Showed the Vatican what gold’s for.”
Peter’s speeches lure the masses from their places of worship (“Emptied churches and shopping malls”) for a simple reason that’s almost counterintuitive in today’s cynical society: “Peter Pumpkinhead told the truth.” Naturally this brings discomfort to those who have already achieved power, but their efforts to damage his reputation fail miserably: “Plots and sex scandals failed outright/Peter merely said, ‘Any kind of love is all all right.”

Music with an extremely important message... no one is going to stand in front of JESUS & say well I didn't know there was nothing I could do about it... while everyone who does do something about it gets run over & everyone stands on the sidelines scrambling for their cornbread crumb
Andy did a record signing in NYC on 72nd and broadway, it was not Tower but another chain can’t remember. He signed my copy of Nonsuch and I told him how I saw them with the Police in Austin Texas, Andy “ I remember that show it was my birthday” it was 1982 English Settlement tour I believe but they did a lot of Black Sea, they were the best live band I had ever seen.
Das canções que marcam a nossa vida para sempre. AMO DEMAIS!
I love this band and this song and album! Such clever lyrics mixed with awesome pop sensibilities!!
simply brilliant song, every word and note are perfect (typing thru tears)
Maybe it gives just thrilles ..and the sweet catchy tune clash the whole thing.
Epic
Wow. The only version of this I'd heard, up to now was The Crash Test Dummies version, which I assumed that they'd written. I love that version, but having heard this. I loved a lot of XTC that I heard in the 80's but I'm determined to check out more of their stuff!
The best sounding bunch of nihilist’s I’ve ever heard.
Where I live the kids are discovering XTC since they listen to the vinyl their grandparents kept. Brilliant.
This song makes me cry.
Me too
@@WorldCitizen0011 Me too!
LJY08, I was late to the table with this band too. I bought 'Oranges and Lemons' and worked my way back. And then forward with 'Nonsuch' and the 'Apple Venus' and 'Wasp Star' albums. A late in life discovery.
Bangin tune! XTC was very underrated !
Thank God for my incredible Alternative Radio Stations fr 1987-1995 around Kansas City area.. 10yrs old to 18
Yes it does make you wanna cry.
Its so heart warming to know that a band i once fell in love with from the early eightees with sences working overtime being listened to right now, i cant believe how little recognition they havent been afforded, but a great band none the less
Baita som, marcou minha adolescência...
This lead singer is charismatic af, he carries this video for sure.
Andy partridge has such an amazing voice.
Ironically certain. The same loop again and again everywhere. We must change the chip in our minds. Thanks for posting it. One of the great songs ever!
I first started listening to XTC in 1981 when "English Settlement" came out. Awesome band.
Yes. Most under-rated band ever during my time. Definitely has a message. I love them. Very emotional and true.
pure genious. XTC
I used to listen to the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack every day, all day when I was about 11 years old back in 1995. Now fast forward to 2021 when I discover XTC. Hearing this song again for the first time in 25 years or so, but in it's original form and knowing it's this "new" awesome band that wrote that ditty from way back is just something else.
Great movie.. great soundtrack 👍
Another clever track by XTC 💗
Had no idea that this was an original song covered by the Crash Test Dummies. Glad I found this, I like this version better.
easily, one of the most under appreciated bands ever!
Criminally underrated and under appreciated band
Love you, Bernie!
Whadda fantastic metaphor ~ & what a tune!
Perfeita para um sábado a tarde !
This band is the reason I like any of the decent music I like today - my father raised me on Apple Venus, Skylarking, Nonsuch, and their Dukes of Stratosphere albums, amongst their others. Such an amazing band. They're my guilty pleasure as a 21 year old.
In 90's this song was played several times in some radios stations in Brazil.
I'm 15 and I love both XTC and crowded house. Not to much of a squeeze fan, but only heard 1 of their albums.
Makes me proud to be a fellow Swindonian 👊
Estoy muy emocionado por encontrar el video original de esta canción que siempre he tenido en mente y que me encanta desde mis tiempos mozos, gracias por subirla a quien corresponda, gracias gracias.....
I always laugh at the fact that MTV censored this video because of the Kennedy references.
Wow, really?! That's sad...
@@seanemmettfullerton Why would they censor that?
@@corey-bird3489 (sigh) I honestly don't know.
Giant corporate sponsors underwrite cable tv and primetime, so if THEY don't like your video or program, you're cut, no discussion. The Kennedy family made a lot of enemies on both sides of the law... (especially the mafia), and most conservatives hated them with an absolute passion.
@@corey-bird3489didn’t want to piss off the Kennedy clan.
@@DWNicolo Don’t say a bad word when you can say a good word
The way the drums are recorded in the mix is flawless, especially for this era
Nossa, como gosto dessa música...ouvi muito quando era adolescente...
You, sir, just named three of my favorite all-time bands. If anyone else my age (17) that I meet knows them I just might weep.
Wow! I'm 38 never heard of these...amazing sounds
it's never too late ;)
I don't think I have ever been disappointed by anything XTC has ever done it their whole career as a band!! Love this song! I remember seeing them at Uvic in Victoria BC
Una de las bandas mas influyentes que hayan existido. Crearon casi todos los elementos que conformaron un estilo musical, sin ser reconocidos. Un ejemplo muy parecido en el rock, es la banda estadounidense KingsX.
I haven't heard this song in ages but I heard it on the radio coming home from work today. I got the flashback to being 17 when it came out. Ahhhh, the carefree days. Totally adding it to my Spotify playlist
there were a few classic albums by "british" bands in the 90s, teenage fanclub did "grand prix", xtc did "nonsuch", totally different but absolute pieces of art!
ENGLISH band dude..... please
Supergrass - I Should Coco is distinctively English.
Abbey road of the nineties. You can play the whole album without jumping around
Video is filled with so much symbolism
