It was very easy for me to find Ms Gentry’s home and phone number when she lived in LA, her current residence as well as a relatively recent picture. I didn’t bother her. Good for her for getting out and surviving! I hope she feels she made the right choice!
@@joelsieradzan He is not lying. I know her address, have seen her home, and have recent pictures of her. She has chosen to leave her fame behind. I don't blame her.

Bobbie Gentry left Georgia in the 90's and purchased an estate in L.A from Lisa Marie Presley. In about 2011, she moved to Tennesse near the Mississippi border and bought an estate for 1.5 million in a gated community( current value is over 3 million). You can google her residence and see an arial shot of the complex. Her retirement in the 80's had more to do with her young child as she chose to be a more hands on parent. Even today at almost 81, her song writing legacy continues to bring in millions. Ode to Billie Joe has been covered 245 times and sold a staggering 50 million records. Fancy has 22 covers and 25 million in record sales. A further 26 songs of hers have been covered by other artists. Legendary master jazz pianist, Bill Evans, immortalized her composition, Mornin' Glory, on multiple albums and on the concert stage for decades before his passing.
Bobbie Gentry was a gifted songwriter. My favorite song of hers is "Seasons Come, Seasons Go" It always gives me chills when her voices goes up an octave twice. I must have adored her music in a past life.
This is an excellent presentation of Bobby Gentry & her music. I remember how in the mid or late 60s, she was a huge star. She made appearances on all the music & variety shows, sometimes singing with other stars like Glen Campbell. She did represent women & what they could accomplish. Everybody talked about her & speculated about Billy Joe.
She was a true talented artist. She did it all. She wrote and produced her own music when most artists seldom did. Rumor is that she lives just south of here in Memphis. Whatever is true, let her be and enjoy her life.
Well, it makes perfect sense that she chose to walk away from her music career. And for the most logical reason stated here. She was fed up with the music industry which had become a cesspool of greed and combative record labels. Just see what it is now. For someone as fiercely independent, confident, and self possessed as she, it's the most logical reason.
The movie Ode to Billy Joe was a huge hit amongst us romantic young teens. Me and my friends loved it. Robbie Benson played Billy Joe and of course he’s cute as heck. Don’t remember much of the details. I enjoyed this trip down memory lane.
All that I remember of Bobbie Gentry was her song on the radio. Listening to this presented a mystery over what was dropped over the bridge into the river. But as the song faded from radio stations play lists, I had moved on too.
Just yesterday I came across a reaction to Ode to Billy Joe and watched it and several more by people who’d never heard of it. It was very well-received.
My late mother and I would enjoy Bobbie Gentry‘s music as we drove around in her beautiful 1959 Olds Skyrocket. Look what has happened to Britney Spears and what happened to Mariah Carey under the tutelage of Tommy Mottola! Good for Bobbie Gentry for getting out of the business. She knew what she was doing. I hope that Bobbie Gentry is happy in her life. I must say I do miss her music.
"Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense; pass the biscuits, please." I love the sarcasm of the old man. I understood it better as I got to be an old man myself. 😄
Not sure if she is missing. She just wanted to drop off the scene. Rumor has it she resides outside of Memphis. A photo of her much older surfaced several years ago. You find it on Google .
Many years ago my younger brother worked at The Anaheim Convention Center ,he was able to get us discounts for many things that happened there. We were abjectly see Ringling Brothers ,Barnum and Bailey circus for free . So my dad my two children myself and my special needs sister were able to go and as she was in a wheelchair,we got to sit in front of all the chairs, about a half hour after the circus began ,a ,lovely was escorted in if I remember correctly she had a small child with her ,she was placed right in front of us and kept tiring around and smiling ,after the circus ended ,people were coming up and asking for her autograph,it was Bobby Gentry,I had no idea ,she was lovely and gracious to everyone .
She is staying in the back bedroom of my 65’ long single wide trailer. About every 3 or 4 days she comes out and drives a mile down the road to a country cafe and orders her biscuit and gravy. Then she comes back and goes into the back bedroom and closes the door. 😢😢😢😢😢

Jo Dassin,a famous french singer did a french version of Ode to Billie Joe,almost identical except Billie Joe became a girl named Marie-Jeanne wich is the title of is cover. He also changed the place where it happenned. Its good.
I did a bit of research on Billie Joe. The Talahachee Bridge is a little footbridge, and the water is about 3 feet deep. People come from all over the world to see it, and all of them are disappointed.
I still think that Shania Twain sort of stole her act. Tall beautiful brunette. Controversial stage clothes. Came out of nowhere and just skyrocketed. I hope that Bobbie is happy with her choices. See sure could make a beautiful front and back covers. Rebba covered a lot of people’s songs.
If "Gentry" is her stage name, she probably bought the property under her real name, which would either be "Streeter" (if she reverted back to her maiden name after divorcing Jim Stafford) or "Stafford" (if she didn't).
You are unclear whether the “demo song” she didn’t want to sing was “Ode” or Fancy”. You start off saying it’s Ode to Billy Joe, but then you point to Reba wanting to do it??
Now I don’t know this for sure, but; @ 8:03 it sure looks like she is on a “side porch” area of the enlisted Orthopedic Ward @ WRMC during the Viet Nam era. Those guys are wearing US Army inpatient hospital duds, BTDT at about the same time.
Apparently you don’t know. However Gentry is certainly a great song writer. I think among the very best of word smiths right along with Kris K, Bob D and Paul S. Absolutely top notch.
Great summation of a very talented and beautiful woman! It's too bad she didn't stay in the entertainment industry. All that could have been. Can't say that I blame her, though.
She isn't missing she retired to seclusion outside of Memphis Don't blame I wouldn't want to spend my life around the entertainment industry either. Was quickly and briefly successful beyond her dreams didn't try to string out and went some where quite to live. Good for her.
What was thrown off the bridge Ode To Billie Joe was the young couple's stillborn child. It's obvious if you listen carefully to the lyrics. And Bobbie Gentry didn't hang around with Elvis, they never even met! smh
Bobbie Gentry would be about 82 ys old today if she were alive, My gut feeling is she died years ago and all of her assets were liquidated by those who had ties to her, If she was alive she would have been found, likely she had a private memorial similar to Eddie Rabbit. What ever the case may be people should move on and allow her and her family peace.
What are you basing that on? Just being a nattering nabob of negativity would be my guess. I'm blown away at how many people are living past 100 nowadays. She's only what, 81 this year? And she was looking pretty fit in the photos of her that were shown.
I'm still loving this song by Bobbie.

Ode to Billie Joe is a haunting song with mysterious lyrics. I was young when it came out but have never forgotten it.❤
So Reba didn't know "Fancy" was about a prostitute?! How could you NOT know? That's the whole story!
She was being sarcastic.
U can't make me. Believe. Reba. To be that. Dumb. ! She knew !

😂 you do realize that the lyrics alone very much indicate that fancy was prostitute. Even the most clueless people today get that from Rebas' lyric.
Very interesting background on Ms. Gentry. I love her songs. Wherever she is I hope she's happy and loving her best life. 😊

Ode TO Billi Joe not Ode of Billie Joe - great song. Thanks for this
