- Art Deco was an international decorative style that ran from 1919 to 1939 through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects, including how people look (clothing, fashion and jewelry). The actual term art déco did not appear in print until 1966, in the title of the first modern exhibition on the subject, held by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.
Howard and Jo Anne Melton’s compact collection focuses on the art deco period through companies Elgin American, J.M. Fisher, and more!

I would pay good money to see you travel the world for a documentary series, talking to people from different countries about beauty and visiting important historical sites related to beauty history. You're a great host and educator Erin :)
It would be my ultimate dream 🥹 I have always loved doing makeup but I honestly love beauty history more. Until it happens I’ll continue to bring this content on RUclips 🤗
@@erinparsonsmakeup And who knows, maybe such a dream is closer than you think ;). In the mean time, thank you for the content here.
Oh yeah we’re all thinking the same thing! You’re perfect for it Erin, like the female historians who host the docu-series on BBC.
That would be cool!!❤
I certainly join a patron group in helping that dream come true. ❤ Love Erin’s passion for beauty history and sharing it with us.
This is what I love about Erin; she's not some "influencer" simply doing a makeup challenge, she is a professional makeup artist who is sharing her passion by teaching and educating us about the history of makeup, makeup techniques and products (aka Beauty History)!
Thankyou so much! 🫶 maybe I’m influencing collecting beauty history and that I’m fine with 😝
@@erinparsonsmakeup I can agree with that statement; I have noticed myself trying to keep an eye out for vintage makeup products at flea markets that have art deco designs or vintage look to them.
Yes. A true lover of the art of makeup.
I'm currently on a train in Sydney watching this. I just had an elderly lady tap me on the shoulder, and she she said, "Oh, Ive got some compacts from back then "! She opened her bag, and showed me the most beautiful compact. If I hadn't been watching, I never would've seen it! And, yes, it WAS from the 1920's!
The fact that Joanne was so excited to show someone their beautiful collection because nobody wants to see it honestly shocked me! I would be drooling over them in person 😂❤
It's amazing how these are in such good condition! They obviously handled them with care because they know how important it is to preserve the history behind these compacts
It really is amazing to think about it, finding a mint condition compact that is 100 years old 😮!
Erin, you are such a gracious human. The respect you show to the people you interview is a breath of fresh air. You do your research, you've read their books, and ask such well thought out questions. When she says "This is so much fun, no one is ever interested in our compacts!" just shows how much joy you bring to so many.
I've pointed you out to couple of people at National Geographic and The History channel as I think they would be very interested in your work.
Oh that would be amazing! And my dream so Thankyou!
It's so interesting how people viewed makeup before, and the differences/similarities in how we view it now. It truly is an artform, from packaging to the way it's applied. Thank you Erin!
I totally agree! I learn something new everyday when it comes to beauty history 🥰
I think you guys might also love The Way We Wore here on youtube where Dolores and her staff show us vintage design and costume pieces. It's right on theme.
I know it was very interesting 🤔 I have a lot of books regarding material culture of the time but usually getting more into granular everyday items like a compact and it’s individual evolution in time really reveals a lot about women, society and cosmetics than is explicitly written. Hearing from the collectors and Erin was interesting and I look forward to my book in the mail 😁
so so cool!!!😊
@repentandbelieveinJesusChrist2Can’t avoid you people coming on my door step can’t you people on avoid on the internet.
Erin just came for the beauty community on RUclips and said “imma do things a little differently - no drama”
Love your content! It’s absolutely fantastic. I’m here for it.
This was pure pleasure to my eyes. I love art deco everything and makeup. Why don't we get this level of packaging anymore?
Fast fashion
The cost and there is a lacking of skilled artists
CEO greed and no more aunthenticity
Ms Parsons you need to bring out your own line of compacts as soon as possible! This collection is so very beautiful. Always brightens my day when you post. ❤️
Maybe one day! It would be an absolute dream 😍
I'd buy them!
@@sewcute_sewvintagesame as a trans man I still need to powder my nose in this Floridian heat 😂
Howard and Joann your collection is just magnificent . Thank you for allowing Erin to film and sharing it with us. My grandmother was born in 1906 Her best stories were in that era and left me some of her items. Im now looking into starting my own collection and purchasing your book.
Hello Howard and Joanne! Thank you for your awesome book, your time and effort, and for being interviewed by our talented girl! She is an inspiration!
🫶❤️🤗🤗🤗
Any day Erin posts a video is a good one! ❤
I’m trying to post Wednesday and Sunday but I won’t make promises yet since I still work as a makeup artist full time 😜🥰 I love creating this content and so appreciate seeing your love for it too! 🤗
@@erinparsonsmakeupyour so cute and i love how educated you are and you seem like you genuinely love making these videos. ❤
@vuuuf Indeed!! ❤
The compact with the blue gradient stripes just lights me up inside. I do love a good gradient.
I just love watching people share their passions and geek out over them. The pure joy when Jo Anne said how much fun she was having and how no one ever wants to see the collection just warms my heart.
Me too! 🥹 I was kinda shocked hah!
Super exciting seeing a notification that Erin posted!!! 🎉♥️
Big Thank Yous to Joanne & Howard for taking the time to show us their BEAUTIFUL collection!
It was a dream come true for me! I’m so glad you enjoyed it too! Thanks for your lovely comment 🤗!!
I love the fact that Erin's videos are equally entertaining, aesthetically pleasing and educational❤
What a delightful couple! Their collection is just fabulous. I love when you do these deep dives into make-up history. It is fascinating.
I love this! I am not a big make up girl, but I love art and I’m not one of these people that goes to art galleries but when I see something beautiful, I respect it and I share this kind of thing with people so that the history can stay alive! But this is amazing and so fascinating!!!!!
I’m so glad I could share this collection with others as it’s just too beautiful to not be seen 😃
@@erinparsonsmakeup yes!! Thank you for keeping history alive!!!
The beauty of Art Deco ! Over and over, each piece topped the next one. I’m so glad you did this video. I wish the whole world was in the style of Art Deco! Thank you Erin❤
Girl you are the ONLY doll. I absolutely adore u and your videos! I have gotten all the girls at the MAC store watching all ur videos lol
Oh I wish this was much, much longer. I could spend hours looking at those compacts. ❤
I worked for Lauder for 20 years, i have a book like this about their perfume compacts! I have 6 vintage ones (i personally love youthdew ❤)
The perfume Passage has the most incredible Estée Lauder Collection that belonged to Roselyn Gerson. I never appreciated them until I saw them in person wow 🤩 the detail is incredible!!
Perfume compacts? Oh my gosh I bet that book is also fascinating! Do you have the title?
@@grandmasgopnik9642 it's literally called "The Estee Lauder Solid perfume Compact Collection". Back in the late 90s (I think) they gave it to us advisors as gifts...its really amazing!
❤
I was never really into makeup and stuff but then I came across Erin. Idk there’s something about her. She seems like a genuine down to earth person, one of the good people. Every time I see a video or short from her it really makes my day brighter. And that collection, that is stunning. I’m so grateful the owners were willing to sit down and show us and tell us about it. I’ve always been a history buff and now looking into makeup history it’s just a dream
Oh Erin!!! This is awesome. I GASPED when I saw their collection. It’s amazing. 😍 I have a few older compacts and I hope to find many more. I’m in love with their collection. Joanne and Howard seem like a lovely couple. I’m so jealous they showed you those beautiful compacts in person. But, Thank you for sharing this experience with all of us. Erin, you have a beautiful collection as well. Wow!!! You are so cool!
Yet ANOTHER home run, Erin! I can’t get enough of your historical pieces. The owners seem so lovely, and it is amazing they made it possible for your viewers to get a peek at beauty from the past. I wish that you would do a tv series/documentaries on all your incredible information and contacts. It would be so amazing. Thank you, Erin!!! ❤️
The quality of these compacts is astounding for a novelty item.
Erin's calming voice, beautiful face, and diving into the vintage with guests can brighten the day 👍🤠
Howard and Joanne ❤ what a sweet couple. I love your passion for collecting
The Melton's have probably saved these beautiful compacts and their history from getting lost to time. Thank you for sharing with us!
I am swooning over their collection. Absolutely stunning. I am amazed that any of these exist with the product intact. I have to purchase this book.
I have a small collection of compacts and it's fantastic to see people talking about them and showing their collections. Love how excited Erin gets looking at other people's collect when her own is so impressive. ❤❤❤
I live near Chicago and didn't know any of this stuff existed so close to me. I am so excited to visit the museums you've shown!
Well thank you Erin! Another book to add to my eclectic collection and thanks to Dr.Howard and Ms.Joanne for showing their beautiful collection and passing on this information!
What a truly wonderful glimpse of the past.
Sincere thank you to the hosts and their exceptional collection.
Rest assured, people still exist whom both value and respect such dedication.
Please continue the collection and harvest the subsequent joy.
It’s marvellous!
Thank you Joanne and Howard for sharing your collection with us! ❤
Erin you are a natural interviewer/ presenter: Knowledgeable, polite and enthusiastic.
A television network should snap you up to do documentaries about the things that you are so passionate about.
That would be my dream! Thankyou for such a sweet comment 🤗!
It's my pleasure. I look forward to seeing more content from you.
When Joann said she can picture what dance this compact may have accompanied a lady. I was so with her!! Yes! Beautiful collection and some familiar from my grandmother long ago! 🥰 love this channel so much!
I absolutely love Art Deco. The Cooper-Hewitt Jazz Age exhibit back in 2017 was just spectacular. I didn’t want to leave.
Exquisite! How wonderful that you were able to interview some of your favorite collectors ❤️
And I talked to Howard about it over a year ago 😮 seeing the collection in person truly blew me away! I’m so glad I could share with you all 🥰
@@erinparsonsmakeup Love all of your content :-)
These history/collection videos are my absolute favorite! In 8th grade, I gave a presentation on the history of makeup and I've been interested in it ever since. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos and thank you to everyone you interview that archives such collections.
Wow! That’s really forward facing as an 8th grader! Honestly this stuff is so interesting reminds me of looking at all my great grandmothers cosmetics and beauty secrets. It was like seeing an old Hollywood star 💫 all her cosmetics were pretty. Even her panty hose came in pretty packing!
I'd love to see compacts like this come back in fashion. I'd wear them as jewelry! ☺
I'd love more episodes with them too! And I hope they're reading through all these comments to see just how many of us LOVE their collection!
Yes! I am thrilled to see anything Art Deco. I grew up in Miami in the 50's, my dad's medical office was at 16th Street and Meridian Ave. As a kid and adult, i loved the hotels and architecture and of course those wonderful colors. I lived in Miami for years, the district underwent some really hard times. Thankfully, some forward thinking people saved the district and the area . Thank you for this delightful post.
I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven when I see such treasures. Thank you so much for sharing! ✨🩷
The Salvador Dali bird is my favorite!! It's such a stunning piece of work! Ppl like Howard & Jo Anne are the reason why treasures such as these are still around today! 🙌🏻Long live the passion for collecting!🫶 Thank you Erin for sharing your passion & knowledge with all of us! ❤ I'll be ordering their book. 💋
Look at the quality and workmanship that went into products yrs ago. Now all we get is plastic😢. So beautiful thank you for taking us on this journey.
This chanel is truly a gem. Makeup, beauty, how to's, history of makeup, ancient/vintage ways they made makeup and possibly wore it, short documentaries, art and just so much more! It's absolutely amazing
Admire Howard & Joann for their tenacity on keeping and educating on their collection as it benefits all who are interested in the subject. Special thank you to you Erin... I love your vids for many reasons especially for taking us back through the decades.
I have so much respect for collectors that do so much to preserve the history of such beautiful things!
I know I’m really impressed how much history they dug up!
It’s beautiful how it goes from print to the actual product.
I am not a collector (yet), but I love when someone finds a passion for something of yesteryear and preserves them and their history for future generations to enjoy. These arts of beauty would be lost forever. Thank you.
Erin, this is AMAZING. This is the beauty content we NEED!!
These two are so adorable! I would love to sit down and talk to them for hours.
I long for these compacts!! I really could look at vintage makeup for days and never get bored 😍 this made my day 🩷
This is very, very cool. Thank you to Jo Anne and Howard for sharing with us. The love you hold for your collection is very apparent and appreciated.
Thank you for doing these Erin. I adore your content and all the knowledge you’re sharing with us. ❤
Omg these are BEAUTIFUL! What an incredible collection! It's wonderful that they were willing to let you visit and chat with them - they seem lovely!
I like his reasoning for his favorite compact.
They have such an awesome collection! Amazing that they kept with it all these years! Much appreciation for the tour/interview!
This is amazing! Thank you so much for everything you do to educate us about cosmetics!
You are so welcome! I’m so glad others enjoy it as much as I do 😍
Oh my gosh I so, soooo loved this!!
Thank you, Howard and Joann!
And what a perfect vid for Sunday...a beautiful break from all the other YT nonsense. I actually learn something here on your channel. Please do more!
As to the compacts; I'm attracted to them in ways I can't explain; the way they open, their contents, the little secrets they may hide, the tiny "click" they make when you close them. Even the word "compact" gives me warm fuzzies, denoting lightness, perfect space, ease of transport. ASMR of a different sort... ❤❤❤
Erin!! I’m so excited to say that I’ve been in my bag and putting that money into preserving all of my favorite makeup and creating a Time Capsule box of everything I love to open 10 years from now as a gift to myself. You are truly special and one if a kind to have this kind of influence on people!! Thank you kindly ❣️🌹
Joanne & Howard, thank you for sharing your gorgeous pieces. Thank you, Erin, for asking them to see.
Thank you to the Melton's for preserving and recording a piece of makeup history.
🎉These are stunning!!!! I also think about just how personal every compact is to the woman that uses it. They truly are a reflection of our culture. Thank you for sharing this herstory of cosmetics.
These are so pretty I can't even believe it! Look at all these beautiful designs with the chains and the cosmetics inside, these are a dream!
Howard and Joanne thanks for the interview, for being collectors and for your part in that beautiful book!!!! 🤩
They have got to be the cutest couple! These compacts are gorgeous works of art. Thank you for sharing.
This is the type of content that I enjoy seeing. I love history.
Very Interesting. I am more the type that isn't interested in collecting but I really enjoy the information and the history of it. It was amazing getting to see Erin connect with them. You could see the appreciation in both woman's eyes and that was beautiful.
Thanks Jo Anne and Howard 😊
Oh my goodness, I only have 2 vintage compacts, one for loose powder which makes me feel so fancy. Their collection is so stunning. Thank you for featuring it!
I just love how you turn “ makeup “ and beauty into a subject that can engage lovers of design or history. I am certain you have expanded the interests of many. You are truly amazing.
I have had a difficult few years and decided to look into recapturing my sense of self… and learn about makeup. Now my appreciation of beautiful objects and history has grown. I have a beautiful peacock compact that I bought years ago and you have made it more treasured.
I am still going through my mother’s personal items and it has turned from tedious into “ oh this is interesting “.
I would love for you to do a video on “ if you are new/ or starting over” makeup and products. Previously I was very natural and loved the occasional all out glam 1Mardi Gras ball makeup. All of the products and techniques seem overwhelming .
Thank you for your polite and beautiful videos.
Loved seeing how beautiful things used to be -wish I could see them in person! Also, Jo Anne, your glasses are very cool.
I love what you, Howard, and Jo Anne do by preserving relics of beauty. It's so fascinating.
As a makeup artist myself, i love all forms of makeup, the packaging the thought behind it, the experience. But nothing compares to the craftsmanship of yesteryear. Things were meant to be cherished, and kept for generations. So beautiful. I love coming along on your journey Erin thank you for the love you put in.
I know where to offer anything I come across that's vintage makeup related... It's nice to see someone who is so passionate about a topic and draws ppl into the topic as well.... Someone who doesn't know about our care about makeup would absolutely be drawn into the topic just by your genuine passion and curiosity
This was so cool. My favorite era is art deco, but mostly I'm into the jewelry of that era. (Unfortunately I do not own any pieces yet - can't afford it. But I at least know of where to get it when I am ready!) But this was really fascinating too! I just love the designs of the compacts. Imagine living in that era! Thanks again for another great history lesson, Erin! 😊
This is absolutely amazing! The beauty of these pieces is unbelievable! She says nobody wants to see them? They'd have to throw me out! 😍
Much appreciation to Howard, Joanne & Erin for this wonderful presentation & for keeping this precious period of art history alive. I purchased a book & cannot wait to read it. J’adore!
I dream of a revival of the manufacturing of items like this. There's a total lack of art in design nowadays!
So grateful I stumbled across this channel. I am OBSESSED and in this case, with something I didn't even know existed before, hand!🤗
Howard & Joanne are some of the original beauty influencers.
Sir and Madam, thank you for showing us some of your incredible collection.
Howard and Joann, thank you, both, so much for allowing us to see you amazing compacts and sharing your knowledge of them.
I could spend days looking at this collect! I wish were a museum to house some of the compacts. I have loved compacts since I was a small child. My twin sister, and I, each, received small Avon compacts for Christmas in 1976. A life long love affair began.
I think Miss Jo Anne is so cute! Her glasses are unique and suit her so well ♡.
Wow what a collection ! Those compacts are truly works of art-- so colorful, with such original designs. I wish elaborate, refillable makeup containers were a thing today.
Stunning job as always and now I’m obsessed with these compacts! All individually their own masterpiece. Astounding & so beautiful! Thank you all! 🎉❤
You really have brought something new and fascinating to RUclips. Very high quality content!
Thank you so much collectors!!! You make this all possible for us
I hope their collection ends up in a museum in Chicago some day. It would be fabulous to see it!
just wow you can see how much time went into the little lines to make the design. i swear i've had that blue and silver compact from 1923 in a past life or just something about it is familiar i can't seem to find the words. thank you for caring about the real people who own these and taking time to share their perspective and personal history is just inspiring, u make me hopeful for my future self because i cant wait to collect vintage pieces thru my 20s! don't stop doin what u love 2 do💕
Ooh what a thrill to talk to these two passionate collectors! Hope you had a blast ❤
Oh my gawd!!! I’m dying! I’m dead! What an amazing collection , and such a wealth of knowledge. I love it all!
OMG Bring the roaring 20's back! thanks for this~
Ohhhh I love this soooo much ❤...never in a million years would I get this opportunity to see all of the rare and beautiful pieces they have showcased....I am so thankful to them and you for making this happen.... absolutely a treat for me to see...hope to see more❤
What a beautiful collection...i love what they have done making a book and what you are doing showing the world the beauty (not just on the face) and history of makeup..it's so fascinating...what a stunning collection, i would be so afraid of sneezing or tripping around those compacts lol ❤️
To Howard and JoAnn, thank you… and I guess I am not the only one to only watch RUclips and NOT have social media… I am not alone😊
No one is doing it like Erin. ❤
The designs are so beautiful. With art deco you get so many different vibes; Native American, Japanese and French. The compacts are incredible.
I freaking LOVE art deco. What a stunning collection !
I really loved the emphasis that vintage compacts are a work of art and like a really beautiful piece of fine jewelry. I feel the same way about many other items crafted in the 20-40's, and just consider it such a wonderful time where creativity meets innovation in such a visually impactful way. Thank you for sharing Mr. and Mrs. Melton and to Erin for interviewing such a cute couple
Hiya Erin, thanks for yet again another fab video filled w/ not only beautiful, useful beauty items but the history and intricacies of these items. It’s very much appreciated! Much love! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️
