    There is one thing I would love to see ALL camera manufacturers do. That is to improve their camera manuals so they actually explain WHY to use each feature, not just how to use it. While they're at it, they should hire some editors who can write native language versions of the manuals.

    Building up more software competence is the biggest mistake of all of them. Not only quick sharing in social media but also computational photography like automatically combining a black-and-white short shutter photo with a long shutter color photo to an better night time shot like probably most smartphones do. That's why they still keep loosing more and more market share to the smartphones.

    Talking about Olympus (now OM) at 9:56 ... you made a big call in this Video, that I really respect: "I don't care for sensor size, I care for results". Lately you recommended the Canon R6 as a better option to the new OM-1. You said you'll test the OM-1. I'd love to see a in depth bird fotography comparison from you both! Maybe you could include the Olympus 100-400 mm f5.0 - 6.3 Zoom Lens and the Canon RF 100-400 f/5.6-8 IS USM Zoom Lens with 2x converter for the Canon, because I think Zoom Lenses are the better option for finding birds. Same basic price, range and weight for both sets with the Canon 2x converter, good time to show the picture quality advantage of a modern FF camera, while staying at the same price and weight of the MFT competitor.
    Winter is over, the weather gets better by the day - grab the two cameras with these Lenses and show us the difference in real world results! Bokeh, Stabilization for stills and Video, Image Noise and loss of detail at high ISO in dim light and fog, High speed pictures of fast moving wings, Hit rate for starting birds using the pro capture option, handheld Hi Res function used on birds... show us if they are just OM marketing gags, or if they are actually usable features. Its not about winning, I wouldn't mind to see the Canon R6 to succeed.
    For the shooters with the big pockets you could make a third category going along as a kind of "best of industry" reference - choose whatever you want or have: The R5, the Z9, the Sony A1 with high end Zoom glass... use it as an expamle on how far off from the two budget cameras the high priced optimum actually is. Of course: Compareable distance and light conditions.

    Well, I am from a software and hardware background. You'd be surprised the latest cameras are at least 5-6 generations behind the latest mobile processors like Qualcomm 8 Gen 1. These come with an 18bit ISP single camera up to 200 megapixels, can process 8k @ 30 fps and 4k @ 120 fps. It has a built-in cellular 5g modem, Wifi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, lossless AptX audio and a host of hardware accelerators like h264, h265 etc. The chip can drive dual displays eg. EVF + monitor and costs like 70 USD in bulk. The chip also supports PCIE4 and low voltage RAM like LPDDR5. It would make an awesome camera phone (unlike a phone camera). Additional hardware accelerators can be built using FPGA which are quite widely used in signal processing. Processing 8k video is not that a large problem when compared to other domains. 45 megapixels @ 16 * 3 (RGB) bit per pixel @ 60 frames per second generates about 16.2 gigabytes of data per second. Most of the mid-range commodity FPGA can process this data with some effort like colour space conversion, de-interlacing, gamma correction, clipping, chroma resampling, synchronization-and remove temporal and spectral noise from the video using 2D Filter etc. All points to a fact that most of these companies are in Japan would need fresh startups to disrupt the market.

      Maybe processing the data coming from much bigger sensors requires different processing. I'm not an engineer but I can imagine that the engineers who work for these companies know what they are doing. Also, rendering a nice image is not only about resolution or frame rate, I use a Sony a1 (50MP photo, 8K video, fast reliable af, 30fps burst etc.) and I also use a Fuji x100v (26MP apsc) and I often enjoy the Fuji images more

      @@kristofkollar4431 true.. the camera interface of small sensors are different to that of large mirrorless sensors. If a company want to leverage the mobile phone SOC nothing is preventing them .. mobile phone market is quite big, every sensor manufacturer has IP which can be used for larger sensors. Regarding the colours, it is actually colour management only. ISO is fake - true. All sensors has only 1 or 2 native analogue gain in the ADC stage. One can create a tri-gain or quad-gain senor (gains are in steps) but not variable gain. Hence ISO is after data acquisition in the processing pipelines. Every camera company has their fine-tuning of voltage reference to ADC, gain circuit in the circuit etc that results in better low light performance etc. ISO processed in-camera vs lightroom are different .. camera may follow a different algorithm and known parameters when processing for ISO than what lightroom will do. AI denoising and scaling is the next frontier :))

And I switched from Canon to Fujifilms and I feel that I have found the best camera system for me (Fujifilm). Many photographers rely on eye detection so much that their composition is suffering. They shoot with one hand, waiting for the confirmation of eye detection. It's tough to nail composition holding the camera with one hand. :) lol, I barely turn on eye detection, I don't need it to take a great photo. For so many years as a DSLR shooter, you did not have eye detection.

    I appreciated your comments on the first roll-out of the Nikon Z cameras. I bought a Z6, thinking that it would bring all of the Nikon "goodness" that I had experienced with the DSLRs to the mirrorless world. But it was not to be. Compared to other systems that I owned (e.g., Fujifilm), the performance was atrocious. That experience combined with the extremely expensive Z mount lenses, basically soured me on Nikon. The result - in June 2021, I sold all of my Nikon equipment - equipment built over 35 years - moved over to the Sony. What Nikon did not seem to understand is that it lost customers like myself. I wish that Nikon had recognized these bad experiences and worked at retaining the early adopters of the Z mount. But, that was not to be.

    • @gerrys6318
      @gerrys6318 2 года назад

      It was a total shame how badly Nikon blew their initial attempts at mirrorless, and they're definitely still struggling to catch up. But on-going firmware updates and the Z9 may finally be starting to change things. After 40+ years with Nikon I came close to just jumping ship, but instead just delayed my switch to mirrorless until very recently. When making that decision I compared mirrorless lens prices since lens investment is such a huge factor. Z lenses are expensive, but as of this moment the equivalent Canon and Sony are all in the same ballpark. Some a little more than the equivalent Nikon, some a little less.

    • @rickymcc8624
      @rickymcc8624 2 года назад +2

      Yes me too. Was a loyal Nikon user for 28 years. Loved the system, honestly never thought I'd change. Saw how Sony was killing it by mk.iii and a9. Waited eagerly for N's response, especially after the much hyped Z-mount (Tron like imagery and hyped theoretical spec), only to be disappointed with the underwhelming z6/7. Also their lens map looked slow and lackluster. I knew that native glass was always superior to adapted so whatever else I did I knew my F glass needed to be sold asap before the market in used F glass fell too far. So sold 3 Nikon bodies and about 12 lenses and bought into Sony. Never looked back and don't ever expect to switch again as I can't see Sony just 'dropping the ball'.
      I did keep one F3, one F5 and a couple of manual focus lenses as a memento of Nikon's heyday - just bookshelf ornaments now.

      @stevenmelnyk1174 2 года назад

      @@gerrys6318 I admire your patience. But, even now, Nikon is "screwing" things up. Consider their release of the Z9. According to every report, this is a great camera - in some ways the equivalent of the Canon R5 and the Sony A7R IVa. Yet, to get one of these cameras, you have to be a registered Nikon pro (as pointed out in the video). For everyone else (me included - I am a professor of supply chain management), your options are either to wait until later on this year (maybe) or to go on Ebay and pay huge markups to others for a Z9 (Jared on RUclips joked about this as a strategy for making money). Just look at Sony's experiences with the Sony Playstation V. Over a year after its launch, it has yet to get its order fulfillment and supply chain strategy in order (in contrast to Microsoft). The result - it has significantly upset a large portion of its customer base. When you release a great product, after such a horrid initial release (Z6/Z7), you need to make sure that the products are there to meet demand. People want the product; give it to them. Reap the innovation tax. This was not the case. Reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld involving the soup shop owner - no Nikon Z9 for you! One more point - both Canon and Sony understood the need to release an "every person camera" in addition to their flagship. For Canon, it was the R6; for Sony, it was the A7R III/IV or the A7R IVa. Where was the "every person" camera when Nikon released the Z9? So, great points but I still have given up on Nikon.

    I just want to add my 2 cents to the debate and say, that the wifi capabilities are really a big problem. Even for professionals, photojournalists often have to deliver live images from events like protests, press conferences ect. But it takes so long to transfer photos to my phone from my Nikon and everytime I import, it reimports all the previews, so if you transfer 300 images and 20 images later, you have to send another picture to your editor, then you have to import 320 previews and its just so annoying. All Im saying is, the wifi capabilities are really crucial for many peoples work and it should be one of the priorities to fix this.

    Canon is sooo great, they even REMOVED SAVE SETTINGS from R6 which i had on old CHEAPER DSLRs so one has to reconfigure the entire camera from scratch if it resets! Stupidity at its brightest! Not to mention the nerfing of shooting speed on the entire R3/5/6 line if battery goes under 50% Canon prioritized BATERY LIFE over ability to shoot fast? FFS, who wants to save battery but not be able to take photos! And this is a hardcoded software 'powersaving' mode. I rather be able to shoot at full speed another 30 minutes than have a half-full battery which can't shoot at all or take single shots at 2fps! Ah well, is it a half-full battery really, or a software lie telling you u have 50% when infact u have more like 20%? If this is how they 'fix' battery life, no thanks. Now i buy 3rd party batteries because all of them become useless at 50%, so i have to change 4 batteries a day to be able to shoot normal, and i am not paying 100 bucks for Canon craplife batteries when i get the same for 20 bucks, 50% is all i need of each one!

    The reason why the market for medium and larger format is so small is most people don’t care that larger formats are capable of delivering superior image quality when compared with full frame. That explains why the lens and camera offerings for larger formats are so sparse. For most people other attributes are more important than absolute image quality. The same reasoning applies in explaining the preference many people have for m43 and APS-C over full frame. Bottom line is using larger format systems does not necessarily translate into being able to capture more aesthetically pleasing images.

It’s my hope that Canon will be the first to do it. You are right. Imagine the power of smart apps on our cameras that would allow instant social sharing. Better yet, what about more rich AI by taking multiple shots and merging into the perfect image or other treats that smart phones can do like Timelapse functions and pano stitching. It would reopen the market to average users. Alas the reason they don’t is because they limit their addressable market to professionals and enthusiasts. Also what camera manufacturers need to emphasize is the vastly better image quality than the smartphone. That getting a mirrorless is a real investment, that you can build on which can be fun and vastly improve your understanding and skillset.

    I will probably get a lot of flak for this comment, , but ( as a Canon shooter) I would like a stills based high end camera with adequate video specs as an option in their product line up, Most photographers I know seldom use their video but I also understand there are others that do,
    So my ideal camera would be a wow for stills with ,for example, great tethering capability, lightning fast wifi, great dynamic range and lowlight performance, fast accurate auto focus, fast shutter speeds, decent frame rates, high sync speed, and so on but then just decent 1080P capability for video, In essence it would be a whiz in the studio and outdoors , natural light and flash, macro, landscape etc and have a very basic video capability.
    Then the savings in cost and size for providing heat transfer and other video centric specifications could be used to provide the optimised stills capabilities. This would also assist Canon to not cannibalise their video cameras.
    Just my idea of the perfect camera :) !!

    Hi Guys, When it comes to Fuji, one of their biggest mistakes is they did not open up their mount to third parties until too late. For example, I would love to see Sigma Art series lenses for the Fuji system, but only now is Sigma coming out lenses, and ones they already have on other systems. Basically, I feel that Fuji missed their popularity window to get third party manufactures on board.
    Additionally, when it comes to Fuji medium format, the lenses don't have more direct corollaries to full frame when it comes to lenses limiting system usefulness, like they don't have a equivalent lens to a 16-35 in full frame (however, i think it is on the road map). My point is in both MF and MFT the lenses they have come out with has limited Fuji's systems potential and adoptance.
    I think one problem Canon Mirrorless has is their lenses. No, don't get me wrong, the Canon lenses are great. However, the feeling I got from looking at the MTF charts is the lenses are made for the current system (45mp) having problems moving forward. My basis for this is in part the survey of some lenses from the various systems you(Tony) did several months ago Canon coming in (granted a close) third to Sony #1, and Nikon #2. In short, Sony and Nikon lenses (though not all Nikon lenses for the Z system) seem to be aiming for more megapixels in the future, so a better investment when it comes to lenses. Canon seems to be just good enough for the mirrorless system right now.
    For me, the biggest thing you mention are the apps (or lack of) supporting a given camera system. The overall lack of reliability and flexibility of apps is horrid and almost unforgivable. Apps on a smart device could add sooooooo much functionality, even to older equipment, that I feel apps will be the real thing that could change a camera system, so this is the one that that is missing. Additionally, it would be great to open an API so third parties could change/manipulate the camera to allow it to do new things lowering the cost of cameras over all, and through software teaching cameras new tricks.
    In my view, having Android (or whatever) on a camera is a bad idea, as just keeping it up to date is itself problematic over time. Additionally, individuals update their smart phones much more frequently basically allowing the camera to in part be upgraded along with it at a much lower price. So, strong communications is more important in my view.

While trying to do what cell phones can't the gear is getting heavier and heavier, and I've never seen so many prime lenses coming out (it's like I missed the meeting where they said the world revolves around primes now).
    Sony has the A7C but only 24mp and no lightweight high quality zoom lenses to go with it. Canon has the RP but it's not a great sensor and while they make some lightweight zooms they almost went too far the other way and made them really cheap. Nikon has the 14-30mm and 24-200mm lenses, a great lightweight combo with great reviews, but no lightweight body with a good amount of megapixels.
    What I want is a Nikon Z7C that is the same size as the Sony A7C but with 45mp, and I'd buy the 14-30 and 24-200 in a heartbeat. Nikon actually started mirrorless in 2011, before Canon but their first system was based on the small one inch sensor and it failed. Canon started in 2012 with the EOS M. It struggled for years until the M50 in 2018. Now canon is prisoner of the success of the M-series with two mounts. Nikon failed with the Nikon 1 so it could start with a clean table.
    I have criticism of auto white balance on Canon. Before they introduced the AWB-W option in 2018 they made orange on artificial light. That was for the mood. Their compact cameras always produced neutral.

    • @angeloregina
      @angeloregina 2 года назад

      Canon is not prisoner of the EOS-M system as it is the best sold mirrorless system. The problem of Nikon 1 system prove the biggest Achilles heel of Nikon, out of touch with consumers and dynamics of the market. Panasonic and Olympus introduced m43 and where very succesful, Fujifilm, Sony and Canon also went for a bigger sensor size. Nikon was so convinced of the superiority of DSLR that they even care to develop phase detect on their sensor as Canon did with the Dual Pixel AF. At the time of D850, their AF was solely based on dedicated AF sensor under the mirror where Canon cameras where better using their OSPDAF called Dual Pixel AF then their dedicated AF sensors under the mirror. This proved that Canon saw the rise of mirrorless. Canon first FF mirrorless used the same sensors as their DSLR as they had their Dual Pixel AF. Nikon needed to develop a sensor with OSPDAF as they were the only manufacturer without one.

    I’ve got both APSC (Fuji) and full frame (Pentax) and was doing some studio art work photography last week using both cameras with fast lenses and in the end it was the full frame photos that were the most pleasing because of the out of focus areas being smoother due mainly to the larger format sensor. I really enjoy the experience of shooting the Fuji but if I really want pop by separating subject from background (and I often do) then I’m grabbing the Pentax due the bigger sensor. The option to open up wide with a bigger sensor is so great to have

    • @IcarusLime
      @IcarusLime 2 года назад +1

      Which lenses were you using? The only thing that has changed with APSC about depth of field isolation is the number associated with it. So a Fuji X f1.4 or f1.2 or f1.0 lens will give you the equivalent or even more isolation than a full frame f2.0 lens.

    • @shred3005
      @shred3005 2 года назад

      @@IcarusLime I think most experienced photographers are very aware of the sensor dimension / aperture relationship. I remember it well from when I was shooting 6x6 medium formal and SLRs in the 90s. I’ve got multiple fast-ish primes for both systems. On this shoot I was using the 35mm f/2 on Fuji APS-C at f/2 and 55mm f/1.4 on Pentax FF at f/2. Image called for subject isolation and both did it but the Pentax I could stop down one stop (and it’s edge to edge is average at f/1.4) and still give a slightly smoother background. Wasn’t a lot in it but it was the more pleasing image.
      If just waking about - say on family holiday with the kids - I can use a slow zoom (f/3.5 - 5.6 range) on full frame and still get some background isolation at mid-long focal lengths than I can on APS-C unless I’m using one of the primes. I’ve also got Olympus M43 camera and that really demands f/1.4 lenses to get background isolation. On full frame the ability is there all the time. But then the reverse is true when looking for big DOF say in a landscape. You really have to stop down an extra stop for the same AOV. Horses for courses.

    I actually remember around 2014/2015(?) I was selling cameras at Best Buy and they had a couple of cameras from Samsung that operated just like a Samsung smart phone. I hated it, but maybe with more modern tech a smartphone powered ILC could be workable? There was also a lens that housed its own camera sensor at the time which would snap onto the back of your phone and operate via NFC/BT if I recall.
    My biggest criticism of Canon(and the reason I shoot Nikon instead) comes down to their read noise and shadow banding. As a night scape and Astro photographer, shadows are my bread and butter and pushing shadows in post is important to me. Canon’s issues with shadows have been a turn off even though I feel like everything else would be better. For reference I shoot a Nikon D750 which I am 85% happy with. So I wanted to ask a question here in the comments. However, looking through the comments on this video, I’ve been unable to locate even a single response from them. To those of you who are regulars… what gives?

    I love Olympus - size, quality, retro,ease of use, so much to love etc but what could they do better?
    - Give us better lens choice at the quality level that is not the ridiculous pricing of pro lens range. There needs to be a wider choice of f2 - f3 in zoom at reasonable pricing.

    Exactly...results from low light, focus, and great dof. Sensor size is secondary.

    I have an old Canon DSLR. Because I also own a couple of L lenses, every couple of years I look into buying one of their new models. Every time I decide against it because - incredibly, in my opinion - they don’t have GPS/geotagging, and I cannot easily transfer my photos to the web or to my phone. It’s a huge, massive mistake on their part.

    I don´t think Fujis "BIGGEST" mistake is sensor size. Sure, it does have some effect, but it gives them a very well reserved niche in the mirrorless world. What I struggle more with, with Fuji, is their AF and "full package".
    Don´t get me wrong, the X-T4 made a lot of things work really well, but it´s video AF was sometimes worse than the AF on my X-T3. But while the X-T4 got IBIS, Fuji in general lacks a camera that is geared towards "pro work" and has it all. Fast and reliable AF, greater battery life than the X-T4, deeper grip, full video quality options and much more are already there - even in the Fuji line - but never in the same camera. There´s no offers for higher MP cameras aside from the GFX line, no true "low budget line" either. Buying used Fuji gear often ends up being so much more worth than what you´d otherwise get right from them.
    For most work I still shoot my Sony for that reason - it delivers all of what I need (especially serial images with good AF). This is not to say that I think Sony does everything better. Not by a long shot. But Fuji is still what I have most fun with and get the most interesting, though not best, results from, so I use them both. I also have a Lumix flying around, which is desperately waiting for another use than taking it on a walk because I feel like it.
    Olympus, Nikon and Canon are mostly left to really own, but having a working Sony System at the moment I don´t feel the need to switch. I used Canon and Nikon before and while their newer systems really impressed me when i tried them out, I just didn´t have the need for it right now.
    All in all, yes, all those manufactures have their flaws and everyone sees their biggest flaws in different spots, but if we had "the perfect camera", what would be left?

    DfD is supposed to know which way to go, unlike just CDAF. But it seems difficult to get it right. However the advantage is you don't need to pepper you're pixels with PD sites, there has been several articles done about the banding those missing pixels can cause.

    INTERNAL STORAGE!!! There is no reason why in 2022 every camera doesn’t have at least 500GB-1TB of internal storage. Computers left behind removable storage over a decade ago, why are cameras so far behind?

    Ok, I agree with you as far as Olympus marketing is concerned. But then you also have to be honest now and admit that it's also nonsense to compare the great weatherproof and not focus point limited 300mm4.0 with the cheap 800mm 11.0, otherwise your argument is no better than Olympus itself

    Funny how in the USA many youtubers struggle to get cameras. Here in Shanghai you can find Z9’s in stores easily. All brands are great, and the most important thing is you can get the job done with all of them! Great video!!

    I still have panasonic G1 that i got late 2008 and i still use it often, i also have Mercedes A 160 from 1999 among other vehicles, it needs some welding from time to time and it´s fun to do so. Same with G1, love it still, it is the camera i fell in love with photography, i suppose new things are great, but there is nothing preventing you taking a 100mpix picture with G1 if you do the work. love to you all from Finland:)

    I am surprised that you did not bring up security, this is not only something that can be copied from smartphones but should go beyond that to include lenses. This is also something all camera manufacturers failed at and since Nikon and Canon were late to the mirrorless party they could have made security part of their new mounts. Speaking of Nikon and Canon, they still fail to see the big success Sony has by opening the E-Mount to 3rd party lens makers.

      I fully agree with the "open lens mount" issue. With Sony I have much more choice in lens (like Tamron)

    The watch!? I simply have to ask about the watch.

    There have been some attempts at combining smart phones and cameras but for some reason they got discontinued i.e. the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and the Sony QX1 & QX30 (which were lens systems that mounted to the back of your phone and paired via WI-FI)
