      Radix Malorum That logic is pretty faulty considering China has had purges that specifically killed the educated classes. When everything goes to shit and people are being murdered in the street, you really think that ability to do long division is going to save you? If conflict resulted in natural selection of intelligence, then Africa should be the smartest continent of them all.

    between 20 to 50 millions people died in this rebellion...

    • @Kuntyful
      @Kuntyful 8 лет назад +7

      James Wang OK... I thought China had only 400 million in 1800, and still only 400 million by 1900... when people wonder why China is so successful today, this is because they have had no major conflicts or natural disasters, in the pass 40 years... say what you will about the Chinese Communist party, but they have given peace to China, because, if China today falls into chaos, this would affect the rest of the world...

    • @Kuntyful
      @Kuntyful 8 лет назад +4

      James Wang yes, you are right about the communists... if you understand Chinese history, and lived in Hong Kong, like I have, you realise that the China of today, is where China should be as far as economics. But I do feel if China is to advance further, it has to trust the people, and have more democracy, and freedom of the press...

      actually if you look at the demographics of every end of the dynasties there will be a sharp drop. for example by the time the han dynasties collapse, the population of 50 million drop ed to nearly half of that number.

    China is split by rebellions and civil wars while fighting Europeans at the same time. Prussia unites smaller states and makes Germany while fighting other Europeans (Austro-Hungarians and the French.) Both were empires led by monarchs but then were led by dictators who slaughtered millions, Mao and Hitler. Similarities and differences. Oh and had wars with the British

The British actually wants to trade with but the Chinese looked down on them and refused. This ultimately lead to the First Opium War.When the Europeans learnt that China was so weak, they became greedy and each wanted a piece of the action in China.

      In fact Qing war general Guofan was the one who ended the taiping after the death of Hong Xiuquan by sieging Nanjing.
      after this event Guofan and many of his protégés, such as Li Hongzhang and Zuo Zongtang were celebrated as the saviour of Qing. They were some of the most powerful man in the late 19th century.

But, given that they were travelling along the Yangtze on on hundreds of various vessels, would it not be safe to assume that many were boats?
