  • Originally written by Eugene T. Johnston after the Unions takeover of Charleston in February 1865. The city held a very important symbolic role in the war, since South Carolina was the first state to succeed from the Union, and the bombardment of Fort Sumter off the coast of Charleston was the event that started the Civil War. Union forces tried to take the city three times throughout the war, eventually successfully taking it when Confederate forces withdrew after General Sherman led his troops in the capture of Columbia, South Carolina.
