Thanks to You tube, we can hear these awesome small Americana bands that would otherwise be buried under the Nashville money machine. This is the opposite of the pop pap being pushed out. Great band.
Dad showed me this song on youtube Jan 2012 and he died Oct same year. Within seconds of this song playing, I always start crying, it's really useful when I want to just get shit out and remember him stood next to me hoping I'd like it haha
This is what country music would be if "country music" had gone the right way. This is REAL country. A married couple from South Carolina singing nostalgic songs about America, not this, for lack of a better term, shit, that plays on the "country" radio these days. This video epitomizes what country music IS.
A song for the times. "Everybody's sick, there's a fever going around Set it on fire and burn the whole thing down Go somewhere, start a new town Where no one has to hear that terrible sound"
If Dolly Parton & Bob Dylan had ever gotten stuck in a elevator with a bass drum and a guitar, we might have heard this 35 years ago. Some things are worth the wait I guess.
Shovels, rope, wood, steel, some beer, a couple dogs, a nice spot in the lowcountry to hang out, and a married couple with an insane amount of talent. South Carolina music doesn't begin and end with Hootie and the Blowfish.
I first saw them when they opened for Jack White (not sure how many years ago) and they blew me away. Hands down one of the best shows I've ever seen. I went home and immediately bought their album. Nothing but pure talent right here.
Thank you Shovels and Rope........that's a downright dancing tune......thanks for not cutting out the pups!! They were having as much fun as I was slapping my knee!!!
How imperfect it is actually makes it better. I love the slight screech you get in her voice at those high notes, like a pained squeal. That makes me feel some sort of way. You know, like this music has real soul.
Left, right, left right left Pack 'em up Charlie, gonna leave this place Turn our shoulders to the empty space It don't matter if you're gone today Long as everybody stay away Rich is rich and poor is poor And the money you had ain't good no more Wait in a line, wait in a line Hey mister, can I buy a little time? Everything you planted has gone to rot No one around to pull the little you got Four big wheels, American steel Pour gasoline on the killing field March them soldiers down that line March them boys in straight time Good four boys like feel on the fire Bad news comin' down the AP wire Taciturn til your fingers burn What, if anything, did you earn? Pain it tastes like a savage fire The blood lust of the youth gone wild Everything you planted has gone to rot No one around to pull the little you got Four big wheels, American steel Pour gasoline on the killing field Everybody's sick, there's a fever going around Set it on fire and burn the whole thing down Go somewhere, start a new town Where nobody has to hear that terrible sound Everything you planted has gone to rot No one around to pull the little you got Four big wheels, American steel Pourin' gasoline on the killing field Pourin' gasoline on the killing field Pourin' gasoline on the killing field
How did they not crack up right in the middle of the song with all the dog shenanagins? So funny! Music is amazing!! So lucky to get to see them this weekend. Feel very fortunate! Thanks so much!!
G***amn, I can listen to this on loop for the rest of my life and never get tired of it. I prefer this version by far to the album cut. To me, this is where S&R really shine - stripped down with just the essentials to make music. Cary Ann's voice cuts right to my heart...leaving me wanting for more.
My friend got us tickets to see them tonight! i'm gonna be honest I hadn't heard any of their music till now and I must say I am extremely excited to these guys perform like its more than just country, their songs are so catchy and I'm the first to admit I'm not huge country fan but holy crap this is my new favorite song!!
I genuinely get so happy when this comes on my playlist ... what I think of when someone says American music .. the real knee slapper kind! And the dogs just made the video haha
Absolutely you couldn't have said it any better but I didn't realize until listening to it just nowthe reason I was listening to it was because I was recommending disband for my brother to listen to because we recommend bands and artists to each other all the and I specifically recommended this song not realizing what I was doing but it is very profound at this moment I absolutely love shovels & rope one of my all-time favorite Bands hands down
I haven't heard anything like this, ever, I think. It's just a perfect combination of country, dirty, deeply, passionated. Real, pure. Simple yet complex in detail for the keen observer. Truely, and I mean it, breathtaking. I'm speechless as to what to say.
What is most impressive to me is that S&R has found major success without sacrificing their down to earth, grass-roots sound in any way. Love this duo!
I cant remember having a stronger notion to get up and dance! Best music I've heard since well, can't even remember. Y'all got somethin special. LOVE YOU, and your dogs. . THANK YOU FOR YOUR SHARING. *Inspired*
Bless the Lord for Southern culture. The southern states are the last place in USA that is original and untouched. Long Live Dixie and the True Americans ! Keep playing that soulful tune from the Hills of Arkansas
Just saw them for the first time last nite, warming up for Tedeschi Trucks Band.....they were phenomenal! Such talent, passion....these guys are the real deal!
Thanks to You tube, we can hear these awesome small Americana bands that would otherwise be buried under the Nashville money machine. This is the opposite of the pop pap being pushed out. Great band.
Isn't that the truth. I'm here in 2023 hearing this for the first time. Badass song.
Shovels and Rope is not "small". How dare you sir!
Just kidding. But seriously I love this band.
Truth
Dad showed me this song on youtube Jan 2012 and he died Oct same year. Within seconds of this song playing, I always start crying, it's really useful when I want to just get shit out and remember him stood next to me hoping I'd like it haha
This. This is why people invented music in the first place.
Thank you.
People didn't invent music, the Devil did.
that's why you hear it in churches
@@PaulThomasV You are SO RIGHT. AMEN !

Amen brother!
Could not say that better myself
Oh, but wait...where's the autotune?! THIS ^^^ is brilliant.
Real country music is available ... You just need to know where to look. Hint: and it's not mainstream Nashville.
This applies to all music, too. There's so much out there right now that everyone should be satisfied of they look around.
I love how genuine they are. Props for neither of them breaking too much while their dog was being a doofus.
Almost 10 Godamn years later and it still feels like the first time!!! God bless them!
From a black chick in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. ....I'm feeling this in my soul
Sweet !
Maria Gentles the Hammer is Home
Hamilton the city of waterfalls
I'm in BC Canada and these two artist remind me so much of a couple I know in Edgewood BC!
Hahaha I needed that..
How could anyone not like this song? Their voices are so pure and beautiful. No processed BS!
Gotta love it when something sounds exactly like you expected but still surprises you.
So well put, sir.
How could it not sound like what you expected you fucking idiot?

3rd line applies now with "CHAZ"

My first thought
Wow
Girl got a voice that takes me back
If Dolly Parton & Bob Dylan had ever gotten stuck in a elevator with a bass drum and a guitar, we might have heard this 35 years ago.
Some things are worth the wait I guess.
that maybe the most creative quote about music ive ever seen
Saydrag...."Read".
oh...yeah.read.
That dude can sing circles around Dylan
That's one hell of a compliment... and hell yeah they deserve it..
Saw these folks live in Mexico last Feb. Great performance.
Met a guy at the Shakey Graves show in Raleigh NC a few weeks back that turned me on to these cats. Thank you that guy!! X

This was the first song I heard from these two, and it stopped me dead in my tracks. THANK YOU TO SHOVELS AND ROPE!!!
Same here. Then saw them at NPFF ...awesome!

Just saw them at Pickathon outside Portland, OR. They are fantastic! One of the biggest hits of the show for me. I'm a huge new fan!

This is American music at its finest.
I was almost giving up hope on original work from original people in the music industry.
I love this band and their music.
You may really dig The White Stripes too!
Love the white stripes man!
Handsome King you would probably enjoy Shakey Graves as well
Jeremy D I love Shakey Graves!
I just saw this post and so I checked out Shakey Graves. Cheers for the recommendation. really liking his stuff
I first heard this band on outlaw country. Glad I did
That utterly carefree dog cavorting around is the best part of this video. The best part of this song is that it exists.
Beautiful
I've toured all over the world. I wish we played with more bands like this. Good work.
my new favorite band! I love every tune I hear from them.

Under arduous circumstances, an amazing performance! Love the harmonies.

When the song started I got shivers up my spine. I love the feel.
