There is nothing to get surprised since many Newars still has connection with Tibet in many ways. There are plenty of Lakhpa Shrestha, Tshering Pradhan, Pema Doker Tuladhar and so on living around Kathmandu valley. Almost all the cultural values\ rituals, language, script of Newar (especially Buddhist) derived from Tibet.
And back in the days Newars were the primary merchants between Nepal and Tibet so it's not surprise most of them came home with Tibetan brides. But the modern influence of our Southern Neighbors have led many people to believe that their only historical roots is with Southern India which is so unlikely when they clearly have more Tibetan genetic attributes than Southern Indians. Embrace your Tibetan genes people.
It's not correct tyo say Script of newars is derived from tibet. Actually, it's the other way round. Tibet derived Nepali ranjana script, Buddhism from Nepal..

Kirats were the original inhabitants of Kathmandu and lived in Kathmandu for more than 3000 years before Hindu licchavi came from India and lived in Kathmandu. It's believed that when Kirats left Kathmandu and went to eastern Nepal there were still many Kirats in Kathmandu who didn't want to leave the place. These remaining Kirats in Kathmandu were mixed with licchavis and maybe other rulers of Kathmandu at that time and that's how newars were born. Newars were mixed in Kathmandu not in India or Tibet and that's how Kathmandu became the birth place of newars and still Kathmandu is the home of newars. Newars still worship kirat king Yalamber. They worship Akash bhairav and that's kirat king Yalamber's head. Newars call lalitpur as "Yela" which is short for Yalamber. King Yalamber named this city (Lalitpur) after himself. Lalitpur is the place where Yalamber's palace was. I think Newars are mixed with many rulers of Kathmandu.
